The Hobbit: WITH Roverandom AND Tales from the Perilous Realm, by J. R. R. Tolkien

Three of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic tales available in a uniquely stylish boxed-set to delight adults and children alike. Bilbo Baggins has taken his place among the ranks of the immortals of children's fiction. Written by Professor Tolkien for his own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when first published in 1937. Now, for the first time, we are publishing the world's best loved childrens' tale alongside two other less well-known, but no less entertaining, Tolkien masterpieces. Each tale is written with the same skill, quality and hallmarks that made Tolkien's Hobbit a classic. Largely overlooked because of their relatively short lengths, they are finally together in a slipcase which reaffirms Tolkien's place as a master storyteller for readers young and old.

Review
'The Hobbit belongs to a very small class of books which have nothing in common save that each admits us to a world of its own. Its place is with Alice and The Wind in the Willows.' Times Literary Supplement 'One of the best loved characters in English fiction... a marvellous fantasy adventure' Daily Mail 'Finely written saga of dwarves and elves, fearsome goblins and trolls... an exciting epic of travel, magical adventure, working up to a devastating climax' The Observer

A charming and delightful collection of stories
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
This excellent boxed set brings together a plethora of stories, written by that master of letters, J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973). Each of the stories is excellent in its own right, and together they make a great library.

The six stories are:
1) The Hobbit is a story of an earlier time, and a different place, where there was once wizards and dragons and elves and dwarves. And, in an unnoticed corner of the world there lived a race of hobbits: a small people with furry feet, and too much common sense to go on adventures. But, when a particularly stable hobbit named Bilbo Baggins is visited by the great wizard Gandalf, he soon finds himself in the middle of an adventure with 13 dwarves, facing ogres and orcs and all sorts of dangers.

2) Roverandom tells the story of a young dog named Rover, who crosses a powerful wizard from Persia. (The wizard, named Artaxerxes, had become lost and asked for directions, the misguided guide was confused and given him directions to Pershore instead!) Artaxerxes turns Rover into a toy dog, and sends him off. This is the start of an epic quest for Rover, who meets a sand-wizard, the Man-in-the-Moon, the great dragons that live on the moon, the many merfolk living at the bottom of the ocean, and a delightful little boy.

3) Farmer Giles of Ham tells the story of a farmer by the name of Aegidius Ahenobarbus Julius Agricola de Hammo – or in the vulgar form, Farmer Giles of Ham. A no-nonsense man was Farmer Giles, and when someone steps onto his property, he is there to meet him with his blunderbuss. However, when the next person to set foot on his property is a giant, Farmer Giles soon finds himself dealing with kings and knights and legendary swords and, worst of all, dragons!

4) Smith of Wootton Major tells the story of a little town that has a wonderful tradition where a special cake is baked every twenty four years, and eaten by twenty four good children. But, when a magical Faery star is slipped into this year’s cake, it is eaten by the local smith’s son. And so the life of the younger smith is changed beyond anyone’s imagination – he is marked by beauty of face and voice, and (unbeknownst to anyone) he can even visit the land of Faery whenever he likes. It is a life of magic and giving.

5) Leaf by Niggle is actually my favorite, telling the story of Niggle, a man with an artist’s soul, who lives in a society that does not value art. He does what he can, when he can, but soon he must go on a trip that he was not prepared for. But, on the far side of this journey is the true art and beauty that he only glimpsed before.

6) And finally, the Adventures of Tom Bombadil is an extract of the story of the hobbit’s meeting with the magical Tom Bombadil and his true love, Goldberry, the Daughter of the River, taken from The Lord of the Rings.

Overall, I found this to be a charming and delightful collection of stories. Do yourself a favor, and find out why Professor Tolkien is remembered as the great author that he is. I give this boxed set my highest recommendations!

Cool design, otherwise underwhelming
By Robert G Geer
I purchased this box set from ebay for much less than anywhere else right now. I like the artwork because it complimented the other "black edition" books out now. The books are actually pretty small and were less cool than I thought they were going to be, but I still really like the dragons. As always, Tolkien's stories are great and amusing. Something I hope to read to my kids one day. Overall, they are a nice addition to a collection, but basically only for the cover art.

Littler tales
By EA Solinas
J.R.R. Tolkien is still best known for his groundbreaking fantasy trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." But he actually wrote several other books, ranging from dense fantasy histories to cute little picture books. This three-pack brings together his first published novel, a charming fantasy romp, and a collection of stories and poetry.

"The Hobbit" hardly needs introduction. This fantasy classic introduced us to Middle-Earth, hobbits and the One Ring: placid hobbit Bilbo Baggins is suddenly dragged away by the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves, to help "burgle" treasure from a malevolent dragon. But Bilbo ends up in a lot more trouble than that -- especially when the treasure sparks off a massive war.

"Tales From the Perilous Realm" includes two novellas: "Farmer Giles of Ham" is a delightful mock-hero tale about a farmer and a not-so-frightening dragon, while "Smith of Wootton Major" is about a faery star that changes the life of a young man. It also includes Tolkien's poetry about Middle-Earth, ranging from fun songs about Tom Bombadil to the bittersweet "Last Ship," about a girl longing to follow Elves over the sea.

Tolkien wrote "Roverandom" to comfort his then-four-year-old son Michael, when the boy lost his toy dog on the beach. It tells the story of Rover, a little pup who runs afoul of grumpy wizard Artaxerxes and ends up turned into a toy. Encountering another wizard, Rover (soon called Roverandom) gets spun off to the moon, encounters a talking whale, a sea serpent, and the Man in the Moon.

This can't exactly be called a collection of Tolkien's lesser-known works -- I mean, everyone knows about "The Hobbit." Better it be known as Tolkien's more whimsical works, since even the most serious of these stories has a touch of fairy-tale whimsy and magic about it. Not flashy magic, or gooey whimsy, but the real thing.

As always, Tolkien's writing is entertaining and well-plotted if it's a story, just fantastic if it's a poem. (Although some of the poems have plots too). Anyone expecting the depth and intensity of "Lord of the Rings" will be disappointed, except in the final chapters of "Hobbit." These stories favour cute characters, whimsical imaginings, and the sort of unfettered imagination that usually deserts people after they leave their childhood behind.

Tolkien's more charming, whimsical storytelling comes out in this three-pack of novels, stories and poetry. They won't change your life, but they will make you smile.
