Louise Rennison lives in Brighton, a place that she likes to think of as the San Francisco of the south coast. Which is sad as it is nothing like San Francisco, being mainly pebbles and large people in tiny swimming knickers who have gone bright red in the sun. Although she lives in Brighton in reality, in her mind she lives somewhere exotic with a manservant called Juan.

Hilarious

I am a fan of Georgia Nicolson. But for the confused American viewer's of this page you must understand. This book is the British version of "Away Laughing on a Fast Camel" same book but a different title and no glossory for the non-Brits. But it is SOOO funny and i must read!

going downhill

My old 5th edition (1977) of this atlas sustained some water damage, so I decided to upgrade to the new 11th. My 2 stars are in relationship to a previous 5 stars. Perhaps I would rate it higher if I didn't have an earlier edition to compare it with. It's not all bad: there is a new enlarged view of southern China and Taiwan, a larger map of Korea, a blown-up view of central Japan, a new enlarged view of central Mexico, better coverage of South America, etc. Also some inevitable trade-offs, e.g. two nice expanded views of California, but the big map of Alaska is gone.

There are several major problem areas, however: a couple of glaring examples: in the older version of central Italy, the scale is 1:1,000,000 and includes a detailed map of Rome which is laid over the sea off the west of the peninsula. In the new version, the scale is only 1:1,250,000 which includes a vast, empty expanse of the Tyrrhenian Sea taking up about half of the whole map. The map of southern Italy is even worse: it is the same reduced 1:1,250,000 and is about 3/4 empty ocean, whereas the older version has the more detailed 1:1,000,000 scale which also shows more detailed views of Sardinia and Sicily, and much less empty ocean.

Greece and its islands also show up smaller in the new version (the page dimensions are the same!). Standard written Greek contains an accent-mark for each longer word, to show where it has the stress; my old 5th edition faithfully records this information for the towns, rivers, etc., but in this "new improved" edition the accent-marks are all gone! The new version has a 1:3,000,000 map of the whole of Turkey, including generous swaths of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean; the older version had two much more detailed (1:2,000,000) maps of eastern and western Turkey.

The scale on the New York/New Jersey map is about the same in both editions; the older has a 1:250,000 scale map of the NYC urban area filling in the large area of ocean s.e. of the city, but in the new version that map is gone, all we have left is the big empty ocean. I'm sure that saved them some money, but not if nobody wants to buy it.....

The city maps which were tucked into "low-rent" spaces (empty ocean etc.) in many, many places in the old versions are now all gone, so goodbye also to the big beautiful maps of the London and Paris metropolitan areas (2 full pages each): no city-maps allowed!

Although the paper-quality is good, and the inking has a crisp, clean look, the topography is not as much fun as before: everything is in a lighter shade (they saved themselves some more money!) and so the distinctions between lowland and mountainous areas are not as clear as before.
I was going to donate my older atlas to the department library, but now I'm going to keep it! I feel like the new version is a kind of insult to my intelligence: I don't need to see all of Turkey together to realize it is a single country, what I expect to see in a big, expensive atlas is DETAIL, not cost-cutting. Since this is supposed to be the best, I would be willing to pay even a little more, if I got my money's worth. This atlas may still be the best, but its high price combined with the loss of previous valuable features may cause potential buyers to look more at the competition, e.g. the Oxford Atlas of the World.

A downgrade from previous editions

The Times Atlas made its reputation by being the best atlas in the English Language. In previous editions, its detail and scale was as good as you could get(except for the briefly available and slightly less comprehensive Book of the World from Macmillan). This latest edition may still be better than anything else out there, but I haven't bought it even though I'd like to update. I've looked it over in stores, and the user who noted the reduced scales is right on the mark. I think all of the map scales have been reduced somewhat from earlier editions. He's probably also right about the clarity of the cartography. All in all, I'd say they had poor judgment in downgrading. This was the atlas for people who really knew maps, wanted the best and were willing to pay for it. Now it's a disappointment.

The gold standard

This atlas sets the standard for all others.

I have been using older editions of the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, and no other atlas comes close to this one in terms of user-friendliness and degree of detail.

The second-best choice to the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World is the Oxford University Press's "Atlas of the World". It has the same user-friendly overview over the maps contained in the atlas ("Key to the World/European Map Pages") on the insides of the front and back hardcover. And it has the same comprehensive index of names in the back, featuring not only the location of a certain place on the grid of a map, but also the place's longitude and latitude.

The main difference is the size of the two: The Times Atlas is 19 by 13.3 inches, the Oxford Atlas is 15 by 11.3 inches. The bigger-sized maps of the Times Atlas allow greater detail. In degree of detail, no atlas beats the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World.

If you want to buy an atlas for keeps and you don't have small kids who love to finger your treasures - this is the one to get!

The Napoleonic Wars with Dragons!

In an adroit juxtaposition of fantasy and history, Naomi Novik presents us with the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, bringing to the reality of that era - Dragons. The Human protagonist is Captain William Laurence, late of His Majesty's Navy, now reluctantly a captain in the Aerial Corps. The Dragon protagonist is the Celestial dragon Temeraire, taken as a prize from a French ship on his way to Napoleon from China.
Adventures ensue: desperate battles, dangerous escapades, life-shattering decisions. Friends are made; friends are lost.
Novik's evocation of the society with its reticence, rectitude and rigid sense of honour and definition of honourable behaviour is as spot-on as a Georgette Heyer Regency novel (set in the same time line, minus dragons.)
She writes fulsome descriptions, detailed action sequences, and soul-searching introspection with the enviable skill. One watches Laurence change and evolve, becoming a better man. Although some parts seem a little slow to a modern reader, this reviewer believes that it is because her style is reminiscent of the era, when people danced to a slower tempo, and never settled for three words when there were seven or eight or nine the more nicely to express an idea. (See? She's got me doing it!)
Don't read them for the history. Read them for the people (of both species,) the adventure and hope that there is a ninth in the works.

Un-putdown-able

First part of an absolutely brilliant series - and thanks to the handiness of the Kindle have just downloaded the fifth book, having consumed the other 4 in two weeks!

My only minor gripe would be that the formating on the first two books wasn't brilliant - lots of spaces in the middle of words, often resulting in words being split randomly over two lines. Would have thought that for $6.79 someone could have run a spell check over the document before publishing!

No complaint about the other two however!

I thoroughly enjoyed this whole book- all three parts! Had a tough time putting it down.

If you like the dragon/person relationships such as Anne McCaffrey books and so on you will like this book. The Napoleonic setting was intrigueing but played second fiddle to the in depth 'dragon' personalities.

A surprisingly unsympathetic look at my favorite director

The surprising thing to me about this diary of the making of The Brothers Grimm is that my sympathies were not wholly with the nominal director, Terry Gilliam.

He is my favorite director and I have felt steadfastly in his corner during his fights over Brazil, Munchausen, and the aborted "Quixote".

But here, it is hard to see him as heroic. Time after time when reading this admirably fair book, I found myself thinking that for all that it was a chaotic production (and Gilliam's certainly not wholly responsible for that)...you know what?

He TOOK the JOB. He knew he didn't have a script he liked, and he also knew Miramax/Dimension's reputation. Matt Damon repeats here the story he told to Peter Biskind relating Harvey Weinstein to the scorpion in the tale of the scorpion and the frog, and he seems right.

Gilliam and others speak here of his feeling "raped" by the Weinsteins in the pre-production nightmare, but he is a victim who welcomed a known rapist to his bed.

Two voices I wish could have been represented in this diary are original screenwriter Ehren Kruger and female lead Lena Headey.

Kruger's voice might have served as a reminder that however much of a mad dreamer Terry Gilliam may be (and he is that, gloriously so, and god bless him for it)...this was not his dream.

This was not Brazil, which sprang from the well of his head, and which he made exactly as the script Universal bought...and which they then tried to take away from him. Nor was it Fisher King, which had a script so great he didn't need to "fix" it, only interpret.

Gilliam made the mistake I am convinced is responsible for more mediocre films (which Brothers Grimm definitely is)than any other element: He accepted a script he didn't like in the egotistical belief that he could "fix" it, just because he wanted to get back on the treadmill again. And he was wrong.

Headey was forced upon Gilliam by Weinstein, and evidently had and/or gave something of a hellish time on the production. Periodically we hear of dinner conversations she had with Gilliam that helped her performance (which IMO turned out to be one of the strongest things in the film). I would love to have seen what they said to each other, and her thoughts on the excruciating way (for all concerned) she entered the movie.

It seems Gilliam got a strange case of "buyer's remorse" after taking the job and went, by his own admission, into a kind of catatonia. Believe me, I understand how it can feel for a creator to have his "baby" taken away from him...but there were other people involved who needed Gilliam to engage them.

Damon and virtually everybody else involved with the film tells McCabe their biggest if not their sole reason for wanting to work on the movie was this: The chance to make "A Terry Gilliam film." It seems the only person who didn't want to do that is Terry Gilliam.

A missed opportunity

In the introduction, the author stated that "this is not your typical 'making-of' book"; the problem was that it should have been.

With the exception of the intro and a wrap-up chapter at the end, the book is composed almost entirely of excerpts from interviews and diary entries from several of the main casts and crew members. The problem is that without an editorial hand to summarize and give us a big picture, it all ends up feeling disjointed, with jarring shifts in writing style every few paragraphs or so as the point of view changes. It's easy to lose track of who's narrating and the initials and short-hands used in the diary entries quickly become jumbled together. It feels like there's about half a dozen authors (which in a sense is true) instead of just one.

The sad thing is there actually is a good story to be told here, as some of the excesses and stunt pulled by the producers are pretty self-indulgent, but it's hard to really get into it since the narrative is so patchy. It's like someone who gives you all the ingredients necessary for a great meal, but won't cook it for you. The author certain had access to some great materials, but it almost felt lazy that he would just cut and paste the information together instead of presenting it in an interesting way. Compared with similar works such as "Losing the Light" and "Final Cut" this book simply falls short. The illustrations within are very nice and the narrative style is different, but it feels like too much style over substance and that's a shame.

Another Beautiful Book

The Two Towers Visual Companion is a beautifully done book that die hard Tolkien fans and those new to Tolkien's world will appreciate. Most of the oversize book is filled with gorgeous full color photographs to give you little teasers regarding the film, but also to help define the different races and introduce new characters. For those who are not as familiar with The Fellowship of the Ring, it gives you a little background on those events that spill over into The Two Towers and then moves forward with the story. This makes it a great book for those who are not very familiar with Tolkien's world as it clearly explains who everyone is as far as races and cultures go. There are sections on Gollum, The Dead Marshes, Ithilien, Faramir, Fangorn Forest, Ents, Saruman, Gandalf the White, The Rohirrim, and many more. I am a big Tolkien fan so it was all review for me, but Jude Fisher does a fine job of summarizing the story and preparing the reader for the film. My main interest in reading this book was to see where the book by Tolkien and the movie by Jackson differed and, in that respect, it was very helpful. At the cheap price available now, it is a worthy addition to any fantasy or Tolkien fan's library.

Acquaint yourself with Middle-Earth

Last year's "Fellowship of the Ring Visual Companion" was a must-have for newbies to Middle-Earth, who previously didn't know what a hobbit was or what the big deal was about an elf/human romance. Jude Fisher follows up with the "Two Towers Visual Companion," to give readers little bits and pieces that aren't quite in the movies.
Fisher goes over the various people, places, and occasionally new races that are introduced in "Two Towers." She doesn't recap much stuff from the previous movie, so if you want to fully understand this book, pick up the "Fellowship" guide first. It's sprinkled with plenty of bright pictures, usually several for each character, and background information that will be new to some who've only watched the movie. (For example, the tale of Beren and Luthien is contrasted to Aragorn and Arwen's involvement, and Gollum's history is spelled out in greater detail). Fans will definitely want to check out the pictures of Treebeard, Grima Wormtongue, and the battle of Helm's Deep.
It's sort of a guidebook to Middle-Earth, and so mainly the areas of greatest activity are shown. That means not a lot of hobbit stuff. However, there's a great fold-out map of the Helm's Deep Battle, and a very poetic foreword by actor Viggo Mortenson in which he praises Jude Fisher and briefly analyzes the depths of "Lord of the Rings." (Mortenson's literary skill is never more evident than it is here)
This book is primarily intended for people who haven't read the books, but longtime fans may enjoy it as well.
