Agatha Christie 1950s Omnibus (Agatha Christie Years), by Agatha Christie

A brand new Agatha Christie omnibus, bringing together all four stand-alone novels she wrote in the 1950s - They Came to Baghdad, Destination Unknown, Ordeal by Innocence and The Pale Horse. Agatha Christie's imaginative crime novels and thrillers made her a household name from the 1920s right through to her final books in the early 1970s. Best known as the creator of Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple, her prolific output would bring her publisher William Collins at least one book every year. Twenty of her contemporary crime novels were to feature neither Poirot or Marple, instead a wide range of ingenious plots would be played out by a selection of amateur sleuths, professional detectives, young adventuresses or unwary bystanders caught up in unforeseen events. This collection of five omnibuses gathers together the twenty stand-alone novels, presenting them chronologically and providing a fascinating window on a changing world though six decades of investigation. Presented in this way, recurring characters - including Superintendent Battle, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, Colonel Johnny Race and Ariadne Oliver - rub shoulders with many who would appear only in one book, and the result is a selection of some of the finest mystery writing ever. Here is the answer to the question of what Agatha Christie might have been had she not invented Poirot or Marple - and the answer undoubtedly is still The Queen of Crime!

Investigating an Old Death
By Acute Observer
Postern of Fate

Tommy and Tuppence retired to an old house in the country. They brought their books and bought some left behind by the previous owner. Do they have enough shelf space? One book has letters underlined to create a message (Chapter 2). Tuppence investigates the name of Mary Jordan. The young boy that owned this book died at age fourteen. [There is a lot of conversation, as if the author was paid by the word and dragged out the story; the pacing is slow.] ‘Book Two’ continues the story. Tuppence continues to question old people about the past. Foxglove leaves can be mistaken for spinach with deadly results. Tommy talks to old friends and hears a story about the place (Chapter 12).

Were there hidden letters or papers? Tommy meets Mr. Robinson who tells him a surprising fact about Mary Jordan (Chapter 13)! Tommy tells Tuppence the news (Chapter 15). If the family were mildly poisoned there would be little suspicion if only Mary Jordan died. Was the accident something else? Tuppence visits old Mrs. Griffin to learn about past people (Chapter 16). They search the inside of an old toy horse (Chapter 18). A picture album has a photo of Mary Jordan. Tommy visits Colonel Pikeaway who talks about the past and the influence of money (Chapter 19). He warns them to take care of what they eat or drink, and who wants to be their friend. Tuppence finds the body of old Isaac (Chapter 20). The Inquest says murder (Chapter 21)!

Some children visit Tuppence (Chapter 23). They will accompany her to the old-age home where she talks to some people. While visiting the garden they hear two shots, Tuppence is wounded (Chapter 24)! Tommy called the police (Chapter 25). Colonel Pikeaway heard all the news. Tommy visits Colonel Pikeaway, who advises him to stay close to home. Miss Mullins visits and offers to work in the garden (Chapter 27). She returns the next day, and is seen tampering with Tuppence’s coffee (Chapter 29). Their daughter Deborah arrives with her children (Chapter 30). Tommy and Tuppence visit Mr. Robinson, Mr. Crispin and Colonel Pikeaway are there (Chapter 31). [The solution doesn’t seem credible to me, it reeks of paranoia - the most esteemed person is the traitor!]

Agatha Christie is one of the best known and most widely read writers of all time. This 1973 mystery novel has 31 chapters and more pages than other stories. It is probably the worst of the series; it is also the last. It runs on too long and should have been shorter.

Bare-bones four-week Psalter
By Frank Hillsman
This book allows you to pray the morning (lauds) and evening (vesper) prayers on the four-week cycle used by Catholic priests. Additionally it includes a weekly cycle for night (compline) prayers, as well as material for the different seasons of the Catholic liturgical calendar. All the text is taken from the 3 volume "Divine Office" used in the UK, Australia, India, and many other parts of the English-speaking world. "Shorter Morning & Evening Prayer" is the UK counterpart to Shorter Christian Prayer, which draws from the ICEL translation approved for the US.

This book is a great introduction to the Divine office, and I recommend it whole-heartedly for anyone who wants to add structured prayer to their daily life.

handheld prayer book- for the curious
By Fredrick L. Murphy
In my searching out various prayer books used by Bible believers, i settled on this pocket version in order to become aquainted with some of the prayers i might choose to utilize out of it.

In addition, i purchased an Orthodox Christian prayer book, and a few Jewish prayer books (siddur...). Each book has prayers i wouldn't use, and prayers i would.

My intent in purchasing this particular prayer book was to have handy-dandy small Biblical prayers that i could carry or copy into another format. The print in this is very legible and easy to read, and is laid out pretty good.

My purchase of this item in no way endorses all of it's contents, but you will get exactly what you'd expect with this smaller handheld prayer book...which in my viewpoint is very "standard Catholic" now that i've read thru it...if that helps you anticipate the contents at all (?).

The Big House: The Story of a Country House and Its Family, by Christopher Simon Sykes

The Big House is the biography of an archetypal great house and the lives of the family who lived there for over 250 years. On 17 June, 1751 Richard Sykes, 'laid the first stone of the new house at Sledmere, in a God-forsaken spot high up on the Yorkshire Wolds, where wolves had roamed freely less than fifty years before'. The Big House is the biography of a great country house and the lives of the Sykes family who lived there, with varying fates, for the next 250 years. It is a fascinating social history set against the backdrop of a changing England, with a highly individual, pugnacious and self-determining cast, including: 'Old Tat' Sykes, said to be one of the great sights of Yorkshire (the author's great, great, great grandfather), who wore eighteenth-century dress to the day of his death at 91 in 1861. His son was similarly eccentric, wearing eight coats that he discarded gradually throughout the day in order to keep his body temperature at a constant. He was forced to marry, aged 48, 18-year-old Jessica Cavendish-Bentick -- a lively and highly intelligent woman who relieved the boredom of her marriage by acquiring a string of lovers, writing novels and throwing extravagant parties (her nickname became 'Lady Satin Tights'), all the while accumulating debts that ended in a scandalous court case. Their son, Mark, died suddenly whilst brokering the peace settlement at the Paris Peace Conference at the end of the First World War; Sledmere was destroyed by fire shortly afterwards. But the rebuilt Sledmere rose from the flames to resound again with colourful, brilliant characters in the 1920s and '30s including the author's grandmother, Lily, who had been a celebrated bohemian in Paris. The Big House is vividly written and meticulously researched using the Sykes own family's papers and photographs. In this splendid biography of place and time, Christopher Simon Sykes has resuscitated the lives of his ancestors and their glorious home from the eighteenth through to the twentieth centuries.

In this latest installment in the award-winning Indian in the Cupboard series, Omri's fascination with the little people of the cupboard has matured into an obsession with discovering the origin of their life-giving magic. With the help of his great-aunt's hidden diary and a meeting with an elderly roof-thatcher, Omri is able to piece together his own family's history--one that gave rise to the wondrous events of the last few years. In the process he takes a big risk in allowing the secret to be disclosed to an adult. Relying much less on the sheer derring-do typical of earlier episodes, Banks takes an introspective turn here, weaving a more adult story of disappointment and heartbreak into Omri's ever-widening understanding of the cupboard's mystery. Banks's series has grown up, and though some readers may miss the magical Peter Pan-like world of earlier installments, these rich, well-rounded characters speak eloquently and entertainingly within a polished mystery structure. While observing the parameters of a series, Banks demonstrates an impressive versatility, never swerving from her trademark disarming candor and unaffected yet elegant style. From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6--Indian in the Cupboard (Doubleday, 1985) fans, rejoice! Here's another in the series, and it will appeal most to those familiar with the characters and events in the earlier books. When a distant relative dies, leaving Omri's mother an old farmhouse, the whole family moves to the country. As old thatch is removed in preparation for reroofing, Omri finds a notebook written by "wicked" great-great-Aunt Jessica as she lay dying, which reveals the secret of the cupboard, and how and why it, and its magic, came into being. New little people are introduced, and once again, Omri learns the folly--and danger--of playing with people's lives. Little Bear and Bright Stars, main characters from the previous books, make their appearance only on the last page, when the boy's father is let in on the secret. "From now on, thought Omri, whatever happens--and plenty will--Dad's in on it. Which is bound to make things . . . very, very complicated." One has to wonder if he will allow the adventures to continue. --Li Stark, North Castle Public Library, Armonk, NY

From Kirkus Reviews
When Omri's family moves to the country house his mother has inherited, he learns the earlier history of the magical cupboard first featured in The Indian in the Cupboard (1980). The house belonged to distant cousin Frederick; in its thatched roof, Omri discovers a manuscript dictated by Frederick's mother, Jessica Charlotte, on her deathbed. A tragedy is revealed: jealous of her sister Maria (Omri's great-great-grandmother), Jessica Charlotte- -music-hall singer, unwed mother, and family outcast--stole a pair of her earrings, unwittingly setting off events that left Maria widowed and impoverished. The cupboard was Jessica Charlotte's; now, when Omri finds her toy figures, he uses it to bring them to life, hoping to avert the tragedy by sending them back to her time--belatedly realizing that this may cancel his own existence. Though the story begins slowly, Banks plots expertly, introducing new figures, bringing in old ones for cameo appearances, and even furthering Omri's nice relationship with his dad. There's not much chance to stereotype Native Americans here, as Banks was charged with earlier, but Jessica Charlotte is certainly a caricature of a music-hall singer; one wonders whether it's reasonable, or merely foolish, to deplore such shorthand in popular fiction. Not the best ``Cupboard'' book, but fans won't want to miss it; with a first printing of 75,000, they won't have to. (Fiction. 10-13) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A classic read!!
By Silverado
This series of books are classics for elementary students. I read them to both my 5th graders and then 3rd graders and both ages loved them, hung onto every word, were totally caught up in the magic of the cupboard. I have now started my 10 year old grandson on them and the first book has him hooked. I purchased this particular book to get him the complete series.

An Inspiring Book for Kids of All Ages
By A Customer
The Mystery of the Cupboard is one of the many sequels to the fabulous The Indian in the Cupboard. Omri, the main character, has moved into an Indian longhouse. When Thatcher's come to redo the roof, Omri finds a box and a diary. He reads it. It is about Jessica Charlotte, his Great-Great Aunt. She writes about her experiences, and she knew the secret of the cupboard.

Omri learns a very important lesson: Do not steal because you feel sorry for yourself. Jessica Charlotte does this, and the results are not good.

With a key that can unlock lots of locks, a thatcher with a secret, a person of whom The Secret of the Cupboard is revealed to, and two terrible injuries that result in one death, this book is a great read.

It takes about two and a half weeks to read, and is a great book. You always want to turn the page! But, if you haven't read The Indian in the Cupboard, you should do it first, or else this great book by Lynne Reid Banks won't make sense. Also, for more adventures with Omri, buy The Key to the Indian, The Secret of the Indian, The Return of the Indian, and The Indian in the Cupboard.

Moondust: In Search of the Men Who Fell to Earth, by Andrew Smith

The Apollo Moon landings have been called the last optimistic act of the twentieth century. Twelve astronauts made this greatest of all journeys, and all were indelibly marked by it. In Moondust, journalist Andrew Smith reveals the stories of the nine still living men caught between the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Earth's collective dreaming: Here, we relive the flashbulbs, the first shocking glimpse of Earth from space, the sense of euphoria and awe. This was the first global media event, after all, and the astronauts were its superstars.

They had been schooled by NASA for every eventuality in deep space but were completely unprepared for fame. On their return, they struggled to balance notoriety with a spaceman's frugal paycheck. These perfect specimens of mind and body were, ultimately, only human beings thrust into an impossibly intense spotlight. Possibilities bloomed, and marriages crumbled under the strain.

And it wasn't just the astronauts who'd changed; the world was changing, too. As the Apollo program wound down, the wild and happy experimentations of the sixties gave way to the cynicism and self-doubt of the seventies, and the Moonwalkers faced what was, in some ways, their greatest challenge: how to find meaning in life when the biggest adventure you could possibly have was a memory. Some traded on past glories; others tried to move on. Some found God; some sought oblivion; some reinvented themselves and discovered a measure of happiness in a completely unexpected place. Andrew Smith sees them through the eyes of the boy who flung down his bike on a summer evening to hear Neil Armstrong utter his fateful words -- and through the eyes of a grown man balancing myth against reality and finding the truth infinitely richer and more moving.

A thrilling blend of history, reportage, and memoir, Moondust rekindles the hopeful excitement of an incandescent hour in American history and captures the bittersweet heroism of those who risked everything to hurl themselves out of the known world -- and who were never again quite able to accept its familiar bounds.

Between 1969 and 1972, 12 men traveled a quarter-million miles to the moon and returned safely. In this powerful, intimate story, journalist Smith sets out to find these men and discover how that experience changed their lives. Smith, a boy living in a nondescript California subdivision at the time of the Apollo missions and caught up in the endless possibility of space flight, journeys to the halls of power in Washington, D.C., and the backwoods of Texas in search of these mythical figures of American know-how. He finds Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, still cool and confident, a plainspoken man who never let on how close that mission came to disaster. In Gene Cernan, the last man on the Moon, he finds an imperious, driven, highly successful businessman. If all of the men share one affliction, it's fame. Once at the center of the world's attention, these mostly ordinary men with some extraordinary gifts and luck have lived their lives being asked the same question—What was it like "up there"? In an artful blend of memoir and popular history, Smith makes flesh-and-blood people out of icons and reveals the tenderness of his own heart.

An Intimate Exploration of the Meaning of Apollo and the Moonwalkers in American Culture
By Roger D. Launius
"Moondust" is an interesting book. Having some notable errors of fact, it nonetheless captures much that is important in the popular conception of the Moon landings. Part memoir, journalist Andrew Smith began his quest to understanding the meaning of Apollo in 1999 when he interviewed Charlie Duke, a member of the Apollo 16 crew, and was touched by his admission that "Now there's only nine of us," following the death of Pete Conrad in a motorcycle accident. Smith realized, as did Duke, that not too far in the future none of the moonwalkers would be alive. At that time Apollo would truly be an event in history known only from a distance.

This set Smith on a course to interview the remaining Apollo astronauts, seeking to learn how their lives had changed because of the experience. This book is a remarkable statement of the lives of this elite group of Americans. Some remain household names, such as Neil Armstrong, who has carried his celebrity experience with both dignity and honor. Many are unknown to all except the space community. Some are garrulous and easy to talk to, others are aloof and guarded. Smith found that all were fundamentally changed by the Apollo experience.

Smith's discussion of Buzz Aldrin was especially fascinating. He spent considerable time with Aldrin and talked with him about his life, work, and dreams. Since returning to Earth on Apollo 11 Aldrin struggled with alcoholism, a divorce, and an unending desire to open the space frontier. He has constantly sought to find ways to continue his status as a leader in the spaceflight world. At a fundamental level, we learn in "Moondust," Aldrin was like so many other true believers in space exploration. Apollo and its promise of humanity moving out into the solar system excited him. Aldrin was the epitome of Smith's quote from journalist Jim Oberg, "A lot of guys at NASA thought that the goal was space exploration and colonisation of the Universe, and they all had their hearts broken" (p. 296). Political leaders enthused spaceflight advocates with Apollo only to "pull the rug out from under them." Those who believe that humanity's future lies in space, such as Aldrin, have spent the last thirty years trying to deal with some believe was a betrayal.

Most interesting, Andrew Smith offers observations on the role of Apollo in the modern world. He wrote that "Apollo seems to me to be the most perfect imaginable expression, embodiment, symbol, of the twentieth century's central contradiction: namely, that the more we put our faith in reason and its declared representatives, that the more irrational our world became" (p. 295). As only one example among many, he noted that our science and technology has made our lives more abundant than ever but our dissatisfaction has never been greater. "It's a cautionary tale about that most fundamentally human of human tragedies," he writes, "wanting something so badly that you end up destroying it" (p. 295). For Smith, the success of Apollo "killed `manned' deep-space exploration, stone dead, for at least the next dour decades and probably many more" (p. 295).

Finally, Smith comments on the reason for undertaking Apollo. What was the United States trying to prove? Certainly it was a cold war initiative; a surrogate for war. But beyond that, he finds an answer in the motives of John Kennedy. "JFK wanted something to capture the global imagination, and to excite his own people, and he found it" (p. 297). Smith asserts that any discussion of the practical results of Apollo are irrelevant because it was never about practicality. Astronaut Joseph Allen said it best in a comment reported in "Moondust": "With all the arguments, pro and con, for going to the Moon, no one suggested that we should do it to look at the Earth. But that may in fact be the one important reason" (p. 297). As Smith concludes, "For all of Apollo's technological wonder, it was as primitive as song. It meant nothing. And everything....Was Apollo worth all the effort and expense? If it had been about the Moon, the answer would be no, but it wasn't, it was about the Earth. The answer is yes" (pp. 297-98).

There is much to ponder in this book. It may be read on several levels. There are interesting and entertaining stories from the astronauts and what they have been doing since the end of Apollo. There are observations on spaceflight-past, present, and future. But there are also efforts to situate the Apollo program into the larger rubric of modern society and to understand its relationship to humanity as it stands at the threshold of the twenty-first century. Some of what Smith writes is depressing, as in the case of the lost promise that was Apollo. Some of it is exhilarating because of what Apollo taught humanity about itself. All of it is worth considering.

A remarkable, fantastic and memorable book! Techno weenies please stay away.
By David Meerman Scott
Andrew Smith has pulled off a rare writing feat - he's got several books in one that combine into a unified whole. Firstly, this is a book about the nine still-living Apollo astronauts and what they are doing and thinking today. Viewed from thirty years away from their missions, these men's thoughts and ideas are enlightening, funny, weird, infuriating, and ultimately human. But this is also a book about what it was like to be a kid in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the moonshots were happening. Because Smith is a Brit who lived in the US at the time, we also end up with a partly international look at America's space odyssey. What became most interesting to me however, was Smith's search for "the truth" about Apollo. Alert readers with an open mind will follow Smith through a year of his life and countless meetings with astronauts and their family members, conspiracy theorists, and NASA types, all as he continually ponders aloud for us what he himself is thinking. I particularly liked how Smith used his fleeting encounters with first man Neil Armstrong as a metaphor for how his personal reflections about Apollo changed throughout his year on the road-what great writing.

Moondust is a remarkable book. I read at least a book a week (I'm also an author), and Moondust is probably the best book I've read in two years. Really!

However, if you are a techno weenie looking for minutia on Apollo, do yourself the favor and don't read this book. And if you are an Apollo technical buff and you do read it, please don't write a whiney review lamenting the technical details. This is not a technical book and it is not for you.

I originally picked this book up because like many people my age, I was transfixed by Apollo as a kid (I was nine years old when Apollo 11 went up). I also happen to share a name with Apollo 15 moonwalker David Scott which in elementary school was a weird sort of fame. (I remember watching with my classmates at an assembly when the helicopter was picking up Scott after splashdown and he was dunked in the water. The TV announcer said "it looks like David Scott got wet" which provided all sorts of hilarity for weeks among my peers.)

But like Smith, Apollo had kind of faded into memory as an almost surreal set of events for me. That he spent a year not only searching out what the moonmen themselves thought but also what HE thought, made Moondust remarkable for me. Thank you Andrew Smith for writing this.

An unusual take
By DC
If you are a space enthusiast seeking to know the technical details, this isn't the book you want. This is the human interest, and the author can be forgiven if he doesn't get all the scientific information right. Space collectors will find it fun. For me the pleasure of it was reading about Buzz Aldrin's personable side, Bean's humility, Duke's gracious humor, and Mitchell's fearless curiosity. Treasure the time we have left with these brave explorers, fellow readers.

She is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 100 foreign countries. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott.

Light Amusement With Tommy and Tuppence
By Gary F. Taylor
Originally published in 1929, PARTNERS IN CRIME reunites Tommy Beresford and Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley, first created by Christie for the earlier novel THE SECRET ADVERSARY; they are now married and, although happy in the marriage, Tuppence finds herself bored with the routine of life.

Her wish for excitement is answered when intelligence agent Mr. Carter puts a proposal before the two. A London detective agency has been found to be involved in espionage and its owner has been picked up--but government authorities want to keep the agency open in hope of tracing its illegal activities. How would Tommy and Tuppence like to take on the task?

This set up provides the frame for a series of short stories in which Tommy and Tuppence handle various legitimate calls upon the detective agency even as they hope to make contacts that will break the spy ring. There is Lawrence St. Vincent, whose lady-love has agreed to marry him... but only if he can solve a unique riddle. There is a stolen pearl, the odd scam, and a few murders as well--and, of course, espionage constantly in the background.

Along the way, Tommy and Tuppence have fun by adopting the methods, with considerably varied result, of famous fictional detectives such as The Old Man In The Corner, Sherlock Holmes, and even (albeit briefly) the celebrated Hercule Poirot. It is all very light hearted, lightly written, and as always when Christie elects to trot out Tommy and Tuppence the great attraction are the characters themselves--sharp, witty, and having a good time.

This collection of short stories comes no where near the brilliance of THE TUESDAY CLUB MURDERS, featuring Miss Marple, or THE LABORS OF HERCULES, only slightly less fine and featuring Hercule Poirot. Nonetheless, it is an entertaining sort of thing, and most readers will enjoy Christie's comic touch with her material. Good fun!

an excellent, entertaining read
By JR
This is one of Christie's best efforts. Every story moves smoothly and is satisfying throughout til their expert conclusions. I really like her Tommy and Tuppence books. It's too bad she only wrote 5 of them, but this one I think is her finest. The 2 meld well together and even argue delightfully. A must addition to any Agatha collection. You will not be disappointed.

An enjoyable collection of mysteries.
By Tam Sesto
A collection of short stories featuring Christie's married team of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. The stories are derived from Tommy and Tuppence being asked to take over a detective agency that the authorities believe is an information drop for the Russians. Christie poked a little fun at mystery writers and their counterparts by having the Beresford's take on the persona of a different, fictional detective for each story including Christie's famous, Belgium detective, Hercule Poirot.

Beginners Look Elsewhere
By N...
Author clearly has a wonderful command of the medium & her text is fairly descriptive, but is probably limited by the minuscule format (see below). As a beginner w/limited time, I had very high hopes for this book. I'm sure an accomplished artist can execute the paintings in this book in 10 minutes, but I don't think I'll be able to for a long time, if ever. I'm finding Watercolors in a Weekend by Hazel Harrison more suitable to my skill level. Subjects covered offer a little something for everyone -- landscapes, animals, people, flowers, & still life and certainly showcase the author's skill, versatility, & speed.

One caveat: This book is small, VERY, VERY, SMALL -- (about 3 & 1/4" x 4 & 5/8" and less than 1/2" thick). Perhaps the weight listed should have tipped me off, but who checks the weight of a book?

10 Minute Watercolours
By Donna Fuller
I gave this book 2 stars because of the pictures in the book. If your eyes are 20/20 good for you. You can probably read the book, however if you wear bifocals don't buy this book. The size of the book is about 3" by maybe a bit over 4 1/2". Hazel gives good tips on mixing oolors etc.

There are a lot of nice pictures to look at if you can see them. This is not the type of book you can lay out on your work table and refer to, it is way too small and anoying.

If the book is published in a normal size work book it would be worth buying, however it is very small and I would not recommend to anyone for purchase.

One of a trio of her best books (my opinion)
By Carlo B.
Great author/ teachor. This is a great book to keep in your library if you are on the path to Wicca...you will need this book, plus 2 of her other books: The Real Witches' Coven, and, of course, my favorite, " The Real Witches' Handbook" . If you have these 3 books, you are well on your way.

Very Informative
By Katsurina
I purchased this book as someone studying the craft as a solitary. The books I've read up until this one have been written for solitaries. I purchased this one because the books I'd read only briefly referenced covens or said that traditionally you had to be in a coven to be a witch. Since Covens were obviously a vital part of beleifs, history, and traditions, I saught out a book that would set the record strait on what covens really do.
This book delivers. It's written primarily as a guide for a High Priestess. It describes in detail the life cycle of a coven, what kind of rules a coven should have, how dicipline works, how advancement in the circle works, and which rituals typically require people to be naked.
She describes and suggests some common sabbat rituals, as well as an initiation ritual and a few other coven rituals. She talks a lot about the level of secrecy that should be kept about you coven. If you want to start a coven this is probably THE BOOK for you to read. It's also very informative if you want to join a coven. As far as information on the craft in general, there's some good stuff on the sabbats, but this isn't really a good book to read if you're "just curious about witchcraft"
As a pleasant surprise, I found that Kate West is quite probably the most practical author on Witchcraft you could find. She deals with the effects of real life on the Craft on how these two parts of your life can effect each other. (While many authors tend to simply mention that the craft will make you more confident in your daily life.)
A really good book, and I plan to read another book by the author.

Ok, but
By Paula E. Woodrum
Boy, this ended up being another Wicca 101 book. I was really hoping for more from Kate, and I ended up being very disappointed. I belong to a Trad that is not caught up in Dogma and nonsense, although we definitely have our rules and (more of an eclectic trad). I'm a very advanced practitioner of the craft, and this book did very little for me, especially in the way of spellcrafting and ritual writing (been there...done that). Spellcrafting and ritual writing is VERY personal and should not be constrained to "rules" ... if you have the need and the intent, you have the basis for a spell or ritual. I would love to see someone publish a book on growth in the craft, more on ethics of the craft and karmic repercussions, and see fewer books on the "nuts and bolts" and rulebooks.

Lorax, by Dr. Seuss

"Unless someone like you...cares a whole awful lot...nothing is going to get better...It's not."

Long before saving the earth became a global concern, Dr. Seuss, speaking through his character the Lorax, warned against mindless progress and the danger it posed to the earth's natural beauty.

"The big, colorful pictures and the fun images, word plays and rhymes make this an amusing exposition of the ecology crisis."—School Library Journal.

Amazon.com Review
When Dr. Seuss gets serious, you know it must be important. Published in 1971, and perhaps inspired by the "save our planet" mindset of the 1960s, The Lorax is an ecological warning that still rings true today amidst the dangers of clear-cutting, pollution, and disregard for the earth's environment. In The Lorax, we find what we've come to expect from the illustrious doctor: brilliantly whimsical rhymes, delightfully original creatures, and weirdly undulating illustrations. But here there is also something more--a powerful message that Seuss implores both adults and children to heed.

The now remorseful Once-ler--our faceless, bodiless narrator--tells the story himself. Long ago this enterprising villain chances upon a place filled with wondrous Truffula Trees, Swomee-Swans, Brown Bar-ba- loots, and Humming-Fishes. Bewitched by the beauty of the Truffula Tree tufts, he greedily chops them down to produce and mass-market Thneeds. ("It's a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat.") As the trees swiftly disappear and the denizens leave for greener pastures, the fuzzy yellow Lorax (who speaks for the trees "for the trees have no tongues") repeatedly warns the Once-ler, but his words of wisdom are for naught. Finally the Lorax extricates himself from the scorched earth (by the seat of his own furry pants), leaving only a rock engraved "UNLESS." Thus, with his own colorful version of a compelling morality play, Dr. Seuss teaches readers not to fool with Mother Nature. But as you might expect from Seuss, all hope is not lost--the Once-ler has saved a single Truffula Tree seed! Our fate now rests in the hands of a caring child, who becomes our last chance for a clean, green future. (Ages 4 to 8)

Faithful but cumbersome translation
By jeri larson
This translation is faithful to the content and rhyme scheme of the original, but its very faithfulness makes it incredibly awkward to read aloud. I bought this for my bilingual two-year-old, who loves the English version, based on the positive reviews for this translation, and I only made it a third of the way through the book before my tongue was exhausted. Comparing the two versions, I found each line of the Spanish to have an average of 50% more syllables name of the original. This not only makes it cumbersome and awkward; it also destroys the easy rhyme scheme of the English version, since you have to make it through so many syllables to get to the rhyme - your ear has already forgotten it. I admire the intent, but I'm sending it back because I just don't think I can make it through all the way!

Incidentally, it took two years for me to cave and buy Spanish translations after a long, fruitless, ultimately enlightening search for the Spanish- language equivalent of Dr. Seuss. It doesn't exist - there are a few well known poems and nursery rhymes, but the language simply lacks the kind of rich children's literature tradition we have in English. I report this as a fully bilingual academic scholar of Spanish Literature who has lived for years in Spain. For now, we will simply make do with the few Spanish-language children's translations that are comfortable to read, a volume or two of nursery rhymes, and non-book sources of Spanish language stimulation.
