The Secret History of the South Sea Bubble: The World's First Great Financial Scandal, by Malcolm Balen

The early years of the eighteenth-century produced two great monuments: one, Christopher Wren’s new cathedral of St Paul’s, an enduring testament to principled craft and masterful construction. The other an empty fraud of such magnitude that its collapse threatened to overturn monarchies and governments. Its failure delayed the introduction of modern market economies by two generations. Yet the full scale of this monumental deceit was quietly covered up and hidden, its enduring legacy a poorly understood colloquialism: the South Sea Bubble. It was all planned by one ambitious promoter, who had decided to launch ‘a company for carrying on an undertaking of great advantage, but nobody to know what it is’. This eighteenth-century mission statement has now acquired an almost uncanny resonance: these words could aptly have been applied to the bursting of the Internet bubble and the collapse of Enron. With the financial scandals that have beset global companies recently, such as Rank Xerox and Worldcom, this tale is all the more relevant today. Balen reveals the full story of corruption and scandal that attended the birth of the first shareholder economy, and with it uncovers a parable for our times.

An entertaining account
By Paul Donovan
Balen's account of the "South Sea Bubble" is an entertaining account rather than an exhaustive historical examination of the events surrounding the South Sea Companies rise and fall in the early 18th century. This is not to say that the book lacks historical analysis and insight - but it does not qualify for the sobriquet of a "learned" text.
After a few opening pages of purple prose (through which the reader should plough through, for there is better to come) Balen sets out to paint the circumstances surrounding the "South Sea Bubble". He composes a good picture of the fevered speculation of the period, and in particular is very strong in drawing the parallels to the French experiment with paper money under Law. The view of England being drawn into a speculative frenzy in part because of the need to beat France in commerce is a neat interpretation - and Balen's researches amongst the diplomatic archives bolster the view that the bubble grew out of competition with France.
A reader familiar with analysis of the period will come across the usual clichés - the company formed for "an undertaking of Great Advantage but no-one to know what it is" makes its obligatory appearance, for instance. Alongside these crowd-pleasers, Balen also offers some interesting details of the rise of the company, and the politics surrounding it. In so short a volume, the background setting is necessarily fairly cursory. Nevertheless, the political intrigue (with Walpole cast as the Machiavelli of his day) is well written.
Overall, this text serves as an excellent, entertaining introduction to the bubble. It provides some nice analysis of the bubble in an international context. Heading each chapter is a quote from an apposite article on the internet bubble - but without further elaboration - which struck me as a nice if none too subtle commentary on the ability of human nature to forget bitter experience in the face of wanton greed. For a really serious historian of the period, there is little to be gained from this work, perhaps - but for a generalist, it serves its purpose admirably and gives an nice overview of the phenomena.

The first 'scheme' for investors
By John the Reader
This is an eminently readable book telling the story of the first of the Stock Market frauds, manipulation and subsequent crash in the clear prose of a thoroughly professional communicator. The author has worked in all media and is a News Head with the BBC (British Broadcasting Service) of Great Britain.
Following a scenario now ruefully and regrettably so familiar to those of us who survived the dot.com and Second Great Recession crashes, this history of the 1710-20 rip-off by Banks, Bonders and bounders is all too readily understood. The `Bubble' was what we have been painfully taught to call a "trading margin', the 'South Sea' was a non-existing market "demand" and the trading was as free and unregulated as a Ponzi scheme.
Balen's earlier historical book was on Waterloo ... and investors in this `opportunity' met theirs.
Charles Dickens had words of wisdom for us on short-sales, stocks, lottery, bond and fraud, if we had only seen them - "Sufficient answer to all; Shares. O mighty Shares!... 'Relieve us of our money, scatter it for us, buy us and sell us, ruin us, only we beseech ye take rank among the powers of the earth, and fatten on us'!"

Great read
By Lesley Bowyer
This should be compulsory reading for all students and politicians.

It explains how we are in the mess we are in right now and the probable outcome. This was Victoria, Australia in the 1980's and what's quaintly called the GFC now.

The real problem is we are only told the truth eventually and there is seldom any punishment meted out for all the misdeeds.

Excellent collection at a great price.
By A. Klages
C. S. Lewis is one of the better authors of the 20th Century based on his range of output alone, ranging from literary criticism to science fiction to childrens' novels. In this collection there is no Narnia, and no sci-fi, but many of Lewis' best writings are found here, including:
The Four Loves
The Pilgrim's Regress
Mere Christianity
The Problem of Pain
Prayer: Letters to Malcolm
Reflections on the Psalms
The Screwtape Letters/Screwtape Proposes a Toast
Till We Have Faces
The Great Divorce
Miracles
Surprised By Joy
Given the cost of purchasing these items separately, buying them in an attractive omnibus edition like this one (and it is attractively put together, with high-quality paper and binding) is a good deal, and recommended to anyone who would like to expand their Lewis collection. For me, the highlight was having copies of The Four Loves, Till We Have Faces, and The Great Divorce, having heard much of these books but never having had the chance to read them. Bravo to Harper Collins for compiling this edition, presumably in the honour of the Lewis centennial.

Buyer Beware!
By Javier
This is the paperback edition and contains only FIVE of Lewis' works: "The Pilgrim's Regress", "Prayer: Letters to Malcolm", "Reflections of the Psalms", "The Abolition of Man" and "Till We Have Faces." The prior review refers to the hardback edition of 1999 (ISBN 0006281338), which does indeed contain all the works mentioned by the reviewer. As far as I can tell, the hardback edition can no longer be found anywhere, not even through the internet.

A savagely satirical tale of marital revenge. Madeleine wants revenge; Madeleine wants to be remembered: Madeleine wants love. Who doesn't? Madeleine is ex-wife and chief persecutor of Jarvis, the architect. Why not? She hates him. Hilary is their daughter, growing fatter and lumpier every day under Madeleine's triumphant care, and witness to the wrongs her mother suffered. For Jarvis has a clean new life with a clean new wife, Lily, and a nice new baby, Jonathan. The furniture is polished and there is orange juice for breakfast. Jarvis is content, or thinks he is, fending off Madeleine's forays as best he can. Jarvis has a part-time secretary too - Margot, now the doctor's wife, unremembered from the days of her youth. Margot, unacknowledged wife and mother, accepting, tending, nurturing his children and her own, complaisant in her lot. Then Madeleine, hurling out her dark reproaches from the other side of violent death, uncovers new familial links in the disruption she creates.

Publishers' Weekly 'Fay Weldon's voice is as unmistakeable as her acerbic wit.' Financial Times 'Fay Weldon writes as if she were Virginia Woolf and Roseanne Arnold joined at the hip. She is literary, well-read, totally in control, sharp as a needle and off the wall...' Mirabella

one of Weldon's weaker books - unfortunately
By Aleksandra Nita-Lazar
Having heard many praises and recommendations for Fay Weldon, I went to the library and picked the first book I saw, which happened to be "Remember Me".

The satirical story of several people, connected by sexual ties and/or marriage, involving their children and details of their social positions, has a great potential. Madeleine, the first wife of Jarvis, lives with her twelve-year old daughter, Hilary, and struggles with finances and depression. Jarvis, happily married for the second time to Lily, the butcher's daughter with middle-class ambitions, and with a baby son is reluctant to give Madeleine more money and Hilary more attention. The second couple are Phillip, the doctor, and his wife, Margot, who works for Jarvis as his part-time secretary. Margot feels unsatisfied with her marriage and focuses her attention on Jarvis, because of one night's party sex in remote past, long escaped from Jarvis' memory.

Madeleine is desperate to make Jarvis miserable and to be remembered, so she devises a cunning plan to get her revenge...

The problem with this novel is, that despite its potential, the importance of the issues tackled, and the attempt to satirical humor, there are many shortcomings. The characters are flat, undeveloped and one-dimensional. This could be fine with satire, but it is too far stretched. The irony is too bold and the humor not funny. It is as if the author wanted to get even to the most unintelligent people on the planet. Ambitious task... Considering the pool of readers for this type of fiction.

I thought that I expected too much from this acclaimed feminist author, but, luckily, it seems that I have just chosen the wrong book to start. I would not recommend it to anybody, who does not know Weldon's works. It can be read later, to get the full scope, but not as the first one and definitely not as the representative one.

Refreshingly straightforward help with day to day life
By Tim Burness
Compared to many self-help books this is refreshingly basic and straightforward. There is minimal theorizing and a large number of day to day examples of how to deal positively with potentially difficult and stressful situations e.g. passing your driving test, arguments, insomnia, self-assertiveness, loneliness, and so on. Much of it we may know already but Vera Peiffer leaves you inspired by spelling out the positive thinking solutions and strategies so clearly.
Peiffer suggests that the quality of your thoughts determines the quality of your life and that whatever you send out to others comes back like a boomerang. With this in mind, long and short versions of affirmations are scattered throughout the book and every so often there are underlined notes such as "never give up", "things are meant to go right", "a person who is interested is interesting" and "whatever you spend a lot of time thinking about will become bigger". After reading the last quote you suddenly get a lot more careful about what you are thinking about!
An excellent book full of useful reminders.

Time for US to notice this excellent book
By A Customer
This book, Positive Thinking: Everything You Have Always Known About Positive Thinking but Were Afraid to Put into Practice by Vera Peiffer, has been popular in England for some time, which is how I first came across it. The book presents a clear and helpful approach, focusing on how to translate your learning and insights about more effective thinking into actual practice -- really becoming a more effective thinker. An excellent focus for a thinking book. In my opinion, Peiffer ranks up there with Glickman, Norem, and Seligman as a writer of popular psychology books about effective thinking for general readers. So I am also looking forward to Peiffer's new Happiness book that is coming out this summer.

This book should be your constant companion
By Erik Eisel
If you're going through a hard time or you have set high goals for yourself, Vera Peiffer's book, Positive Thinking, can be your companion.

When I was a doctoral student at UCLA, I spent two years conducting research and writing my dissertation. It was a lonely time, and a time when I needed gentle encouragement. My backpack was filled with library books, but it also contained Peiffer's book. I started every day with a short prayer, and then leafed through Peiffer's book to read the affirmation scripts she has provided.

I have read Norman Vincent Peale and I have taken his advice to repeat affirmations silently to oneself. My favorite is, "I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me." Peiffer takes this idea one step further, and analyzes the effectiveness of affirmation scripts from the perspective of a behaviorial psychologist. It turns out that the simple repetitiveness of these scripts helps to make the "will" stronger than the "imagination," which is capable of conjuring the most terrible worst-case scenarios.

As far as I can tell, Peiffer's book does not rely on affirmation scripts from religious literature. Hers are more direct and economically written.

An example being: "I understand that other people cannot read my mind and that it is up to me to inform them about my wishes," etc.

This book has helped me in immeasurable ways. I hope that it will help many others!

O'Hara's Choice, by Leon Uris

Two decades after the Civil War, first-generation Irish-American Zachary O'Hara, son of a legendary Marine and a force of a man in his own right, finds himself playing a critical role as the very existence of the Marine Corps is being decided. If he can help persuade the Secretary of the Navy that the Marines will be crucial to America's security in years to come -- all the while hefting a heavy, secret weight in his heart -- he'll save the Corps and make his career. But there's an obstacle in his path that this warrior hadn't planned on. Amanda Blanton Kerr, the daughter of a ruthless industrialist, is on a mission of her own; passionate, obstinate, and whip-smart, she's an heiress poised to blaze a trail for all women.

O'Hara's Choice is the story of the inevitable collision of these two handsome, fighting spirits, in which getting their souls' desires could jeopardize everything they -- and their parents before them -- scraped and struggled to achieve.

From Publishers Weekly
With this story of a heroic 19th-century Irish-American Marine, the long career of recently deceased bestselling author Uris (Mila 18; Exodus) concludes. Zachary O'Hara, son of a legendary Civil War hero, is the protagonist of Uris's epic adventure, which ranges from Washington, D.C., to Newport, R.I., and from the Civil War to the end of the 19th century. O'Hara grows up on Marine lore and joins the corps as soon as he can, earning a reputation in his own right with hard work and natural ability. When Major Boone affords him the opportunity of a lifetime a chance to save the corps and gain a prominent role in its future he jumps on it. Zach's career takes off and so does his love life, as he falls for the beautiful and headstrong Amanda Kerr. From the outset, though, the relationship is opposed by Zach's Marine superiors and Amanda's stubborn industrialist father, who has other plans for her future. But Amanda suddenly and inexplicably metamorphoses into a cunning businesswoman and pragmatically decides to abandon Zach (whom she continues to pine after). From here, the plot turns aren't plausible. Uris usually connects the many layers of his stories seamlessly; as this novel draws to a conclusion, however, the hasty revelation of family secrets leads to a forced, emotionally unsatisfying ending. Anyone seeking a compelling read should look to Uris's previous works, as this one is certainly the exception to the rule in a prodigious career marked by phenomenal storytelling.

From Booklist
This new work by the author of, most famously among his previous novels, the popular and filmed Exodus (1958), which focused on the founding years of Israel, turns out to be Uris' posthumous novel, for he died in late June of this year. Characteristically for him, it is a visit to historical times; and characteristically of him, historical facts are not seamlessly, fluidly integrated into the story, but, rather, give the narrative a patchwork feel. But there is certainly a compelling quality to the story itself. In general terms, the novel concerns a vital period in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. Specifically, its characters are the men whom Sergeant Paddy O'Hara saved from the jaws of death during various battles of the Civil War. Sergeant O'Hara was the second marine to be awarded the newly created Congressional Medal of Honor, and every year the men he saved hold a reunion. The year now is 1888, and the group meets with an important item on their agenda: the very future of the corps appears to be in jeopardy. They turn to Paddy O'Hara's son for the corps' salvation, and the plot takes off from there. Despite a leaden prose style, Uris achieves an effective level of urgency in his storytelling to maintain the interest of readers who will seek out the latest (and, presumably, last) work of a popular writer. "O'Hara's Choice"
By Dick Clark
My advise: read the whole book (it is pretty good), but skip the last chapter. Compose your own ending. Believe me, your ending will be a better ending than the one the author penned.
Being a former Marine, I was satisfied with the treatment of the Marines, in general. The ending, however, was all wrong. It was as if Uris had died (which he did in 2003), and some anti-military feminist finished the last chapter for him.
You've been warned.

a disappointment
By A Customer
Don't bother buying this book unless you feel you must read Uris' last book. Surprised to see it on the half-price table, I bought it from curiosity and finished it out of loyalty, having read 'Battle Cry' in the '50s and almost all his subsequent books. This book has almost no military action, an almost melodramatic plot, and (worst of all for me) the dialog sounds like people speaking in modern times. Having served with the Marine Corps, I found some of the sentiments and attitudes hoaky and the romance between the two main characters (this being a clash of strong wills) was wooden. You'd do better with Ayn Rand. Shortly after starting the book, I noticed that Uris died this year; I'm betting his secretary and a sophomore American Lit major finished it for him. This is a sad way to cap a fine career, one that brought me enjoyment most of my adult life.

A Last Dim Hurrah
By Patrick Shepherd
From the opening pages of Battle Cry, through Mila-18 and Exodus, Uris develops his fine stories of people in battle. Battle against prejudice, against poverty, against class structures, against themselves. This, his last novel, once more places people in jeopardy. Covering a period from just before the Civil War to the early 1890's, it is a tale of honorable men fighting to save what they believe in, most noticeably Uris' beloved Marine Corps, but also fighting for a chance to live life and love as they wish, to acknowledge the right of all to be free, and for honor itself.
Zachary O'Hara is the model Marine; practically raised within the corps by his father, Paddy O'Hara, a Civil War Medal of Honor hero who, at one point or another, had saved most of the lives of the male characters in this book. Zachary must fight the battle common to children of famous parents, that of making his way in the world out from the shadow of his parent. His external battle takes the shape of drafting policy papers that will show the necessity of Marine Corps as a functioning part of the U. S. Military, both in the present time and in the foreseeable future, as in the late 1880's the general feeling was that the Marine Corps was a body that had outlived its usefulness.
But this battle must take place alongside his battle to be able to love Amanda Kerr, daughter of ship-building magnate Horace. As Zachary is clearly below Amanda's station, marriage would seem to be out of the question - but Amanda herself is a strong-willed, intelligent woman who knows how to broker deals.
With this as the skeleton upon which to construct his novel, it would seem that sure-handed Uris would have an easy time building a strong novel. But perhaps because Uris died before doing the final edits on this work, the novel comes off as somewhat disjointed, characters (especially the minor ones) not as clearly delineated as is normal for Uris, and occasional pieces of text are repeated, something I'm sure he would have eliminated had he had the chance. As it is, there are places that feel incomplete, dialogue that seems to assume the reader knows more than has been presented, and the prime story, that of ensuring the continuance of the Marine Corps, does not seem to carry the sense of urgency and criticality that I'm sure Uris intended the novel to portray. The historical backdrop of both national events and his character's past does not have enough detail to really make this era come alive. The climax of the story comes as something of a surprise, as only minimal hints about it have been set in earlier portions of the novel.
What could have been a strong story of love and nation-building is compromised, leaving only the feeling of what could have been with perhaps another hundred pages and some strong editing. A disappointment from an author who almost never failed to engage both the hearts and minds of his readers.

It is June 1815, and three armies have converged on the fields of Waterloo to fight a historic battle for honor, glory, and civilization. Amidst the masses of soldiers, five men prepare to face one another: General De Lancey, Wellington's new Quartermaster-General, recently married and yearning for his beautiful wife; Colonel MacDonnell, a Scot who must hold his post to the last man; General Ziethen of the Prussian army, distrustful of the British but vital to their cause; Marshall Ney, mistrusted by Napoleon but revered by the French soldiers; and Napoleon himself, who must prove his worth as a great warrior for the glory of France. As the conflict develops and draws to its bloody conclusion, each of the five men view the the battle from a different perspective, and all experience defiance, desperation, and great courage.

"Killer Angels" treatment of Battle of Waterloo
By Leslie A. Jones
Iain Gale's first effort is magnificent!
Using the Michael Sharra technique from "Killer Angels", Gale gets inside the heads of the leading protagonists at the Battle of Waterloo over the course of four bloody and tiring days. The result is very readable, believable and technically accurate-if you enjoyed "Killer Angels" you'll love this one.
Hopefully this is the first of many books from this terrific writer-Mr. Gale, I am clearing space in my library in anticipation....

Not Bernard Cornwell, But Still a Good Read!
By Christopher Hall
I picked up this book being a big fan of Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe Series. Gale tackles the Napoleonic War's climactic battle (Waterloo) by providing readers with 5 different perspectives on either side of the events(Napoleon, Ney, Ziethen, MacDonnel, and DeLancey). Fans of historical fiction will enjoy Gale's attention to detail and his ability to thread a cohesive narrative through the maze of events of those sometimes rather chaotic "four days in June." I found the book an easy and entertaining read. Although Gale has a tendancy to get a bit melodramatic with his prose, students of the battle who have an understanding of the people and events involved will give him a bit of literary leeway in these sometimes overly flowery bits. All in all, Gale is a very capable author, and gives due diligence to the people and the events of Waterloo, crafting a very entertaining and informative novel.

Great read
By DH
I enjoyed reading this book. I found it entertaining and interesting and it kept me up wanting to read it. Certainly there are better and more detailed books on the subject available, but this effort satisfied me with a colorful account of this short yet decisive period. As a first book from this writer it is very good, and I give it 5 stars for such an entertaining first up achievement. I also recommend "The Battle: A Novel (Paperback)
~ Patrick Rambaud" One of my favorite Napoleonic books. The Battle: A Novel

The Last Highlander, by Sarah Fraser

Fans of C.J. Sansom must read this Saltire Society Literary Awards Scottish First Book of the Year – a great non-fiction adventure about Scotland’s most notorious clan chief.

Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, was the last of the great Scottish chiefs – and the last nobleman executed for treason. Determined to seek his fortune with the exiled Jacobite king in France, Fraser acted as a spy for both the Stuarts and the Hanoverians; claimed to be both Protestant and Roman Catholic.

In July 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie launched his last attempt to seize back the throne, supported by Fraser and his clans. They were defeated at Culloden. Fraser was found hiding in a tree.

This swashbuckling spy story recreates an extraordinary period of history in its retelling of Fraser’s life. He is surely one of Scotland’s most notorious and romantic figures, a cunning and ambitious soldier who died a martyr for his country and an independent Scotland.

Excellent, evocative and historically detailed!
By John Fraser
This book starts out with an introduction to the life of the Scottish Highlands in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, providing the stage setting for the remarkable exploits and life of Simon Fraser, the last member of the British House of Lords to be beheaded on Tower Hill. The author portrays a young man raised to the sound of Gaelic poetry, bagpipes, and the legends of the Clan Fraser. His father was a possible heir to the Barony of Lovat, but of a junior line. Only when the senior line died out without a male heir did Simon's father inherit the Barony. The men of the Clan Fraser fell into line behind Simon and his father, following ancient Highland custom.

A MacKenzie lord, allied with the Atholl Murrays, then conspired to use every trick in the Scottish legal system to subordinate the Frasers to the MacKenzies. Simon rallied the Frasers to resist, eventually resulting in the MacKenzie candidate (and husband of the female heir of the senior line) being jailed while a gibbet was built outside his jail cell at Castle Dounie - the Fraser stronghold. The MacKenzie candidate resigned his claims to the Fraser clan and its lands. Simon became Chief of the Frasers and Lord Lovat when his father died soon thereafter.

The author, who is married to a Lovat Fraser, tells the ensuing tale in a way that evokes the dangers, the loyalties, and the many ways that Scotland's legal system was subject to corruption in the early 18th century. Simon was eventually outlawed in Scotland and fled to the Jacobite court in France, where he met King James and Louis XIV, and tried to win back his claims to a Highland estate by planning and promoting a Jacobite invasion of Scotland. Simon was jailed by order of King Louis.

The tale of how the Fraser subchiefs sent a loyal chief to rescue Simon, how Simon led the Frasers in capturing Inverness and supporting Hanover against a Jacobite invasion, and how eventually Simon won back the favor of King George I, is a tale of espionage, double-dealing, derring-do, and a very accurate portrait of the conspirators in both London and St. Germain-en-Laye.

After describing the failed, early Jacobite rebellions, the author weaves a tale of Clan Fraser recovery, largely through Simon's masterful use of favoritism, corruption, and a judicial appeal to the British House of Lords that was a plain and gross breach of the 1707 Treaty of Union. From 1719 to 1745, Simon did everything he could to restore the Clan Fraser.

The author invokes the color, the traditions, and the plain hard facts of Scottish Highland life in the 18th century. Without excessive sentiment, the acts leading to the destruction of Clan Fraser - and the complete frustration of all the hopes of Simon Fraser - are all laid out with historical accuracy and contemporary details. The author suggests that Simon supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 because the Hanoverian government had withdrawn its financial and political support, and that Simon gambled all and lost. The sad story of how Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, sent his oldest son and his Clan into the 1745 rebellion and destruction, and how Simon was eventually executed after a trial in the House of Lords, is well and truly told.

[ A Must Read]
By karin morgan
A look into Scotland's politics at the time.A great insight into Scottish life, and how Simon Fraser saved his clan. Also how the Scottish had to navigate British rule. A great read, anyone interested in Scottish history before and after the 1745 uprising should read it. Once I started reading, could not put down. Coming from an American History buff

Accessible and Gripping.
By Kate Barber
I bought this book after reading Max Hasting's favourable review in the Sunday Times. The Last Highlander book is a must read for those interested in Scottish History, the Jacobite cause and Bonnie Prince Charlie. But Sarah Fraser's book is also suitable for those interested in good historical biographies and colourful characters. Fraser uses the life of Lord Lovat as a prism, to then shine a light upon the politics, wars and culture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Lord Lovat is a classic rogue. We may not always approve of his behaviour, but we always enjoy his company. There is a great set piece opening, with Lovat heading to his execution, but such is the author's talent - and Lord Lovat's dramatic life - that we are still gripped by what will happen next.

FINALLY an alternative to 101s and Wicca!
By A. Sentoni
In this new, more edgy book, Ms. Green has gone beyond the myriad "Magic 101" and "Wicca" books and finally given the many followers of earth-based spirituality something to think about, consider and work with. This is an important book in many ways: Wicca isn't the only path to witchcraft and this book presents a new (and Old) way to journey. This book, along with her "A Witch Alone" are maybe the only two books you'll need to study Earth Spirituality without all the neo-Celtic trappings.
I found this valuable book very empowering, and confrontive in the best possible way; it forces you to look at your preconceived ideas about Earth Spirituality and "accepted" associations that have been developed within the Wicca tradition. I disagree with the reviewer who said she just gives her own rules, I didn't feel she did that. She simply states that the rules within Wicca are not the ONLY rules, and then puts you to your own discovery of what it really means to be a witch, and to taking responsibility for your own magical actions and growth.
Practical exercises, real examinations and great insights fill this book. This book is for people interested in Reclaiming traditions and Earth-based spirituality seekers, not really for the "Wiccans" (after all, not every witch book needs to be about Wicca or appease Wiccan sensibilities!) Happily, I recommend this book to people who need something more than beginner's knowledge and are seeking to move to a new, deeper level of growth within their own Work.

Intelligent and helpful
By Katrina Stone
I think one of Marian Greens' reasons for writing this book is to get people who are interested in Wicca and witchcraft interested in something that is less encumbered by Western Ceremonial/Qaballic magick. I feel that she also wants witches to be more aware of the enviorment and their impact on it. No new age [stuff] in this book about putting crystals and candles in groves where they don't belong. This is exactly what it is: Natural Witchcraft. Perhaps she will start a new fad of people calling themselves Natural Witches, much as many people started calling themselves Green Witches after the Green Witchcraft series (which, is not nearly as good in my opinion as Natual Witchcraft).
Yes, she is opinonated, but so what? Can authors not express their opinions? If an author has thoughts that don't go exactly with the "group mind" of Wicca 101 books these days, is that a BAD thing? I say no. I loved the book, and while I don't always agree with all her asertations and opinions, I still think she writes well. Perhaps her information is meant for people who are a little more well read. And, if you are heavily drawn to long, annoying rituals that take five hours to perform, then this book is NOT for you. If you like simple, natural rituals, this book will give you inspiration to create your own, and possibly forge your own path.
Think for yourself when you read this book. Some of the things will not be true, like the old country witches going by planetary correspondences. Folk magic practioners/"witches" didn't have access to that until recently. But, authors are not perfect, but as long as you are willing to think about what is being written, and you are able to conciously dicern what you believe to be true, then this book is great.

A Good Antidote to all the Pagan Denominational Hype
By A Customer
This book is a must-read antidote for those people who know in their hearts that there's more to paganism than some of the pagan denominations require of their members.
It was refreshing for a change to read that you don't need to be degreed, covened, pentacled, athamed (that's pronounced ath-a-mayed), cloaked, tattooed, pierced, or any of the other outer manifestations of "belonging" to a pagan denomination. You merely need to revere nature, the seasonal changes, and hone the magical skills of your choosing. Whew! What a relief!
Having had way too many people say that you needed a year and a day in a coven, being scourged and/or bound and/or blindfolded(just for fun, of course...), skyclad, initiated to the nth degree, etc. or you're not a REAL witch -- this book is a breath of fresh air that rings true for me. I've often asked, why would a loving god or goddess ever want their child to be put through such abuse, all for the love of them? Thank you, Ms. Green, for a wonderful book!

Much better than the Reviews Say
By Robert Wellen
Is Coupland a perfect writer? No. Is this book perfect? No. Is it a terrific read? Yes. Coupland has a unique voice and he again says alot here. This book is almost as good as my Miss Wyoming. It is not even close to his worst effort, Shampoo Planet. The story here is fantastical like the story in "Girlfriend in a coma," but it works. With DC you always need to suspend disbelief. Enjoy his satire and fall in love with his characters. There are some universal truths about families in here. It is an incredibly fast read. It is not the most profound you will find, but like space, infinitely enjoyable. I won't soon forget it.
The next time I see a star fall, I will think of Janet and her quiet awakening.

Good but disappointing. Could have been more.
By A Customer
This is a good book. I don't think it is possible for Douglas Coupland to write a bad book. Like in all of his novels, the characters are memorable and colorful, the dialogue witty, and clever pop-culture references are everywhere.
That being said, I had better hopes for this one. Books can be classified according to their driving force: what makes them work. Coupland has a habit of writing character-driven novels, such as Microserfs or Generation X. Better than that is the theme-driven novel, where all action says an underlying and coherent thing about life. His only work that comes close to this ideal is Miss Wyoming.
Dissapointing, then, that this book was primarily plot-driven, with the characters along for the ride. It is time for Coupland to write a indisputably great novel, and not just one that works and is fun to read.
The most irritating part of this book is the coincidences. Coupland knows that as the writer he can make anything happen, which is fine, but it happens too often. Imagine if separate characters run off in separate directions and they don't have any idea where the others are, or even what city, but then they enter a random restaurant on a whim, and hey! There's the rest of the family. Normally forgivable, if it's necessary to the plot. But this kind of coincidence happens over and over, making it feel as if the story was strung together, with no crafting or deliberation. At that point, suspension of disbelief becomes difficult.
The first few chapters are fantastic, and full of life. I was disappointed that by the end it didn't live up to the full, developed style that this author is so capable of.

I miss old-school Coupland ...
By Jake Mohan
I feel that, since 1998's _Girlfriend In A Coma_, Douglas Coupland's books have become, well, less satisfying. They are still packed with trademark Couplandisms: coy observations of Western traditions and foibles, pop-culture ephemera as metaphysical benchmark, wildly improbable escapades by zany protagonists who are deeply flawed but still pure of heart. But somewhere along the way, his stories lost the carefully-developed, mature tone of _Microserfs_ and _Life After God_ and became too quick, too clever, too cute.
The characters in _All Families Are Psychotic_ - from the wise matriarch to the alcoholic father to the waiters and waitresses in restaurants - all speak in the same witty, articulate banter of Cultural Studies majors. Reality in dialogue has always been a weakness of Coupland's, but here the too-clean exchanges between characters grate on my nerves. Coupland's main priority has always been to share interesting and pointed observations he's made about North American culture, and his characters serve as mouthpieces for his message. But I buckled under the disbelief I was suspending when the aforementioned matriarch remarks to her dinner date, "Salad bars are like a restaurant's lungs ... they soak up the impurities and the bacteria in the environment, leaving us with much cleaner air to enjoy." And there's more where that came from. Such remarks are not in themselves repellent, and perhaps that's why I prefer Coupland's nonfiction (_Polaroids From The Dead_) and his short stories (_Life After God_) - in these, he doesn't try to accomplish so much at once, and appears more at ease with his craft.
All Families Are Psychotic does surpass its disappointing predecessor, Miss Wyoming (2000), which read like a creative-writing student doing an impression of Coupland. Families does approach such well-trodden millenial obsessions as AIDs, Princess Diana, and religion from new angles, and there are moments when the cleverness is pure, and well-timed, and results in a chuckle or an aha. There are even some touching moments when Coupland allows his characters to speak emotionally with each other. Perhaps I'm just too much of an old-school Coupland fan: I yearn for the early days of _Generation X_ and _Shampoo Planet_ and _Microserfs_.
