About the Author
Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English literature at Oxford University until 1954 when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. His major contributions in literary criticism, children's literature, fantasy literature and popular theology brought him international renown and acclaim. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year.

Fantastic Deal

This is an absolutely extraordinary collection. While it does not contain all the works that "C.S. Lewis: Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces" does, it contains a great number of his bests for around $15 as compared to $150 for the latter work (including: God in the Dock, The World's Last Night, and The Weight of Glory). I had an incredibly hard time finding the complete list of essays included (I ended up having to look at the Canadian HarperCollins Website), so I'll post the complete list here:

One of the better Spanish-English dictionaries

My Master's thesis was a review and rating of Spanish-English dictionaries. I find this dictionary, like all the other Collins dictionaries, to be a good choice.

Here are a few of the factors which distinguish a good bilingual dictionary from a bad one.

To begin with, ignore certain publishers' marketing ploys such as entry and translation counts. They say nothing about the value of the words chosen.

The first valid factor to consider is lexicographic technique. A bad dictionary simply lists translations. Take, for example, the entry in the Cassell's Spanish Dictionary under the English headword loop: "lazo, gaza, nudo; ojal, presilla, alamar; anillo; recodo, comba, curva, vuelta," etc. For the English reader writing in Spanish, this is hopelessly inadequate, as the dictionary provides no clue as to which translation to use in which situation.

Compare the treatment of the same word in the far superior American Heritage Spanish Dictionary. "(length of line) lazo; (coil) vuelta; (bend) curva; (circular path) vuelta, circuito; (fastener) presilla" etc. Here, the user is given glosses in the native language to assist in identifying the right word for the context. Example sentences are also a tremendous help. Collins is excellent in this respect, presenting good information to guide users through the semantic and syntactic complexities.

Second, a good dictionary should maintain an up-to-date lexicon, including such cultural and technological additions to the language as "baby sitter," "hostile takeover," "software," "flash drive." Collins is a leader in this respect; its frequent revisions are more than mere window dressing and do a creditable job of covering the most recent additions to the language.

Third, idioms, slang, and cusswords can present real problems to the language learner, and a dictionary needs to handle them in a clear and frank fashion. This dictionary gets it right, giving stylistic equivalents for translations as well as clear advice to the user.

One complaint about Collins dictionaries is that they often presents Britishisms without labeling them as such. Revisions have only partially corrected the problem. For this reason, I would not recommend this dictionary to native Spanish speakers in the US.

Be careful when you choose a bilingual dictionary, as some of the choices--Cassell's and Vox, for example--are downright terrible. The field of large dictionaries stays relatively static over time, and the best choices in it by far are Oxford, Collins, and Larousse. The field of small dictionaries, on the other hand, has many more players. While not the only good choice, Collins is a dictionary most users would be pleased with.

Collins Complete and Unabridged Spanish Dictionary

If you are looking for a well presented and comprehensive Spanish dictionary then look no further. This is a weighty tome and one most definitely for home study due to it's size, but for an in-depth dictionary you can do no better than this. This is well laid out and easy to read and each entry has the word in blue and then the translation in black and white. I deliberately tried to find some obscure words in this dictionary to `test' it out and it has yet to fail me. It even has plenty of curse words, which should delight the school kid inside us all! This has plenty of information on grammar, as well as sections on time and weights/measurements etc at the back. A bonus of this dictionary is the enclosed code that allows you to access a website with audio pronunciation, as well as additional online features to assist you with your studies. If you are looking for a portable dictionary to take to class with you then consider one of the more concise editions of this dictionary (also from Collins), but if you are looking for an exceptional and thorough Spanish dictionary for use at home or the office, then you can't go far wrong with this.

Not the Greatest

As a student of Spanish, I like to read novels written in Spanish. Generally I choose books written for young adults so the vocabulary will be easier. I highly recommend the Harry Potter series by the way.

Even with the simpler vocabulary I find myself having to look up certain words. Unfortunately many times the Collins Dictionary didn't contain the word I was searching for but I could find it in my other dictionary, the Langenscheidt's Pocket dictionary. It is smaller (but thicker) than the Collins which is more of a standard paperback book size.

I bought the Collins based upon reviews I read on Amazon, but definitely feel the Langenscheidt's is superior.

The old man looks like a cross between a cartoon granddad and a swami; he sits on top of a cactus, and tells his young listener that the best way to get over any sadness is to imagine all the ways you could be worse off. "Suppose, just suppose, you were poor Herbie Hart, who has taken his Throm-dim-bu-lator apart!" This has a more hurried, formulaic feel than the best Seuss, and it seems to showcase a less acute grasp of child psychology than usual. (Does it really make a child feel better to think of poor Harry Haddow, who, "try as he will, can't make a shadow," or Gucky Gown, "who lives by himself ninety miles out of town"?) But the illustrations alone make this morality tale a minor classic. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr

Good concept, but a bit of a tongue twister. We love the theme of the book, but as in all classic Suess, he makes up a lot of words and my toddler sometimes gets confused with all the strange funny words he's never heard before. Not my favourite Suess, but the message makes me happy to have it in our book collection.

Everyone Should own This!

Adults as well as children appreciate this book. The message that we should all consider how lucky we are is delivered in classical Seuss style with rhymes and nonsensical words - but is still a powerful message that most of us need to hear now and then. I consider this one of his best works because it not only delivers a good message, reading it is delightful entertainment. Read it aloud to both young and old.

At last a carbohydrates counter that gives the quantities per weight (50 grammes or 100 grammes) instead of giving them by cup, by spoons, or even worse "for average size" !
As a long time Atkins dieter, I had been looking / waiting for this for a very long time; my prayer has been heard.
The first fifty pages give you a resume of the Atkins, Zone, South Beach and Carbohydrate Addic'st diets, a useful reminder of the salient points of each.

Not worth the money.

This carb count doesn't truly have a list of carbs you can use. There is a lot of writing about what you "could" use the book for, but when it comes down to counting carbs and needed an accurate listing of carb listings for food and restaurants it is quite useless.

Very good overall Entertaining as well

This book starts out with a basic overview of the Chinese calendar, including the story of how the 12 animals came to represent the Chinese zodiac. There is then a calendar over the last 100 years, (to 1900), showing the lunar calendar, and when the Chinese New Years began, so you can determine what signs you and others belong to. After that, follows a basic description of each of the twelve animals.
What I was concerned about when I bought this book was that, as a horse, I knew there would be a description of what would be in store for those born in the year of the horse, etc., but what about those born in the year of the fire horse, water horse, etc? Well, as it turns out, Somerville has also added the elements to his book, and you will not be disappointed. Following the basic overview of each animals' upcoming year, is a further detailed description of what the element of the animal will affect that person. I was really pleased to discover that. If you know anything about Chinese astrology, you know that the fire disposition is quite different from the earth disposition or water disposition.
One thing I was disappointed with, is that there is no information on lucky directions or colors or charms, (such as stones or elements) to wear or display. For that, perhaps one should look in a combination Chinese astrology/ feng-shui book. I'm not sure, but I include it in this review for your information.
One thing I especially enjoyed was the description of other monkey years and how the trickster behaved during them. This is not only entertaining, but it is also of great interest to note how the stock market and world events played out during previous Monkey years. It can help you decide for yourself if you think Chinese astrology is valid or not. You can also look back on your own life and reflect on where you were during that time and see how your own Monkey year was.

The Road Goes Ever On : A Defense

This is a work that Tolkien approved of and (more importantly) contributed to. It contains Elvish Caligraphy and Material on the Elvish Language by Tolkien not published anywhere else. While most of the music is by Donald Swann, the main musical material for one of the songs is by Tolkien himself. Because this book contains some glimpses of Tolkien's concept of his Middle-earth that can't be found anywhere else, it is a must-have for any serious student of Tolkien and Middle-earth... even if you consider Donald Swann's contribution of music to this book to be total crap.

An extremely important work for anyone interested in Tolkien's fiction. The collaboration with Donald Swann gives a unique glimpse of Tolkien's own thoughts about the music for his world. His linguistic comments are useful and important for anyone interested in his invented languages.

Swann's music is of its own time and tradition, and intended for reasonably skilled home performance. It is unlikely to be appreciated by those who think of the sentimental yowlings of Enya and Annie Lennox as the music of Middle-earth.

About the Author

Kristina, Celeste and Julianna were all born into the cult The Children of God to the same father, David Jones, who remains a member of the organisation. Kristina and Celeste share the same mother. The three girls were separated from each other and their mothers at an early age and lived in various missions throughout the world under the ‘care’ of various foster parents.

Both Kristina and Celeste were eventually able to escape the cult and study psychology at university. Julianna remained in the cult until well into her twenties, when falling pregnant provided the catalyst to make her escape. Julianna now works in Uganda, where she remains in contact with her remaining siblings in the cult.

True to Life

This book does an excellent job of capturing, in a matter-of-fact narrative delivered in unembellished prose, a picture of what it was like to have been born circa the 70's to parents who joined the "Children of God" cult (which now goes by "The Family International"), and to have been raised there.

Although I grew up in "Family" cult communes in another continent half a world away, not knowing the authors (except for seeing videos and pictures of Celeste Jones at Music With Meaning, which the cult published and circulated), as I read "Not Without my Sister" I recognized the various directives from the cult leaders' "letters" that the authors mentioned - and the unfortunately mirrored consequences when the adults around us implemented those directives on me and the other children around me.

So many of the incidents that the 3 authors recount and the trademark environments, atmosphere and modus operandi during the various phases of the cult's history, echo uncannily with what I experienced and saw when I was confined in that insular world. Like the authors as children, it was the only world I had ever known; escape from servitude and a better future seemed impossible dreams. I think the authors handled particularly effectively the challenge of communicating, in a direct and almost conversational manner notably devoid of melodramatics, a child's inner experience of confusion and entrapment in the face of cult-approved and sponsored molestation and exploitation delivered by the perpetrators in tones of religious devotion and of being all "sweetness and light". Disabling distress is felt when one has no other frame of reference to confirm the unruly feelings that all was not well, feelings that went against something we were raised to think was "of God" while surrounded only by grown-ups who embraced that ethos (or were not sufficiently concerned about us children to confront it).

I should note for others raised in that cult that the reading brought back so much of what I experienced and saw that at times the painful memories were too much to continue and I had to put the book down for a time. If, on the other hand, you are unfamiliar with the cult, you may wonder why I would continue reading when that was the case. This brings me to one reason why it is so important that a book has finally been written about childhoods in a cult that has sunk enormous efforts and resources into rewriting its history (aided by certain "academic" types and others that have come within its sphere of influence) in its pursuit of recognition, acceptance and the resulting financial success it craves, all while being unwilling to make reparations to the children who were abused by it. There is a source of pain far greater than bad memories, which can be lethal to sanity and hope: being told that what you remember did not happen, that you are crazy, that you are lying. It is maddening enough when it is various perpetrators; it is absolutely devastating when it is, say, a parent.

As part of the first wave of children born into captivity in the "Family", I ran away one pre-dawn into the unknown, a minor in a 3rd world country at a time when those born in the cult did not leave it (unless, say, you became a runaway, perhaps never heard from again). I had never met or spoken with any relatives outside the cult to whom I could turn.

For what seemed like forever, I felt so alone without anybody else who could bear witness to what happened. I had no examples to show that there could be a future after that childhood, that one could get an education and carve out a fate other than the self-destruction the cult predicted for its "backslidden" children. If I were to dare that today, I would have this book, and my suffering would be immeasurably lessened.

In fact, back then, Kristina Jones' was one of the first voices I heard that bore witness. It seems that her sisters Celeste and Juliana take after that same courage.

This book strikes a blow against child abuse in all its guises, because the perpetrators' wager is that even if you live, you will not tell. However, this book also renders a very specific public service because, while The Family International may not be original among child abusers in the crimes it committed against children, it definitely pushed the envelope in its sustained operation - under the guise of a "Christian" movement - of an international clandestine conspiracy that carried out, covered for and profited from such exploits as child abuse, rape, incest, kidnapping, false imprisonment, torture, child slave labor and trafficking, prostitution, money laundering and medical neglect of minors (like me - I suffered severe and irreversible consequences affecting basic physical functions) and of vulnerable adults, which neglect sometimes resulted in negligent homicide, as my case almost did.

The Family International is now intent on strengthening its foothold in respectable circles that do not know its past, often putting forward as Project Managers of its charities (projects which more often than not focus on vulnerable youth) cult members who severely abused children. The constituencies that it is targeting have a right to know who they embrace or champion.

Perhaps progress will bring the day when institutions such as the USA's Internal Revenue Service will be informed enough so as to stop granting to the Family Care Foundation and other alter egos of such enterprises as The Family International the aegis under which to make millions through tax exemptions.

BRUTALLY HONEST... i was there too.

I was very touched by this book. i cried as i read it, remembering what i too have been thru in this group. i grew up with many of the same abusers and lived in the same country, even living with Celeste and Julie off and on. (Hi girlies!!). i want to state for the record and in their support that despite what others in this group mention, how these things never happened to them...these things did happen, and they happened to me, and i happen to know it happened to them as well. i congratulate them for having the guts to put these things out, to make the public aware of things that can happen. i love you girls, and am so proud of you. ..your friend, Kat

sensational not sensationalist

This book is a very rational account of three people's personal experiences of a very difficult childhood. Despite the outrageous liberties that were taken with their minds and bodies by adults in the organisation within which they grew up, the authors manage to wite a very balanced, rational account which comes across clearly that they do not have an axe to grind but are simply telling their story in the hope that people will question and think hard about extreme religious organisations.
The book is carefully researched in terms of the history of the children of god, and succintly written without dwelling on the 'trauma' of the experience. The authors draw on only what they know and experienced themselves. The voices of the three girls come through clearly, intertwined with their adult selves.
What surprised me was the level of forgiveness they express towards their parents, who come across as drifting souls who were sucked into a cult that gave them the feeling of structure to their lives, and a sensation of importance, especially in the case of the father. The girls come across as positive and determined to move forward. The book is not a navel gazing searching for the reasons why their lives are bad, it is a clear thinking, well written account of what they actually experienced. I learned a lot. read it, if only to realise the blessings that you experienced in your own childhood

Drawing for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Drawing

This book is wonderful for beginners like me who wants to learn drawing on his/her own pace.
There are four subjects of techniques: wildlife, people, countrysides, and buildings.
What draw my attention and interest is the wildlife section because I want to learn to draw
birds, all kind of birds. This book has many examples. Then the book opens me up to draw fox,
trees, houses, landscapes ... I just started my retirement and this book will definitely help me enjoy
the free time that I never had before to have fun and enrichment.

Do Not Buy This Book If You Want To Learn To Draw

The ad for this book is not only deceitful; it is an out and out lie! If you can not draw but want to learn how, buy another book as this one doesn't tell you anything about how to draw. This book might possibly be useful for an individual who already can draw and wants to become better but it gives no instruction to a beginner. The back of the book states "will teach the absolute beginner how to draw" BUT THAT IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH! The ad is a complete come-on, they are defrauding the public.

Excellent book for learning to draw

Drawing for Beginners is an excellent instruction book. The illustrations and written directions show how to draw using directional strokes and shading. Good for learning to move beyond flat-looking line drawing. Gives an overview of drawing tools and paper. Topics covered include: light and shade; composition; proportion and shapes; measuring in drawing; space and perspective; drawing flowers, plants, landscape, skies, trees, water, to name just a few. I especially wrote this review because I do find this book to be significantly valuable and, thus, was quite surprised by the one other review of this excellent book.
