Love to hear Joan Hickson's voice!

The only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is the same exact reason I love Joan Hickson's voice: her voice and speech are so particular to her. Because she has such a quickly identifiable voice, I sometimes find it difficult to follow who is talking while she is reading. She sounds like Miss Marple the whole time and I haven't yet gotten used to "Miss Marple" reading other people's lines. But I've only listened to one of the stories so far: The Blue Geranium, so maybe I'll develop a better ear as I get farther along. I intend to listen to them all and I'm sure I'll enjoy them, but it isn't a book on tape that you can listen to while you're driving, or you'll end up in Toledo - it's good for listening while hand sewing or embroidering or something that doesn't require any thought (so you can focus wholly on that wonderful voice and the story.) I hope you enjoy! I am!

My least favorite from Agatha Christie. Thay may be becuase it's several short stories. There isn't enough space to develop the characters and events as in a longer book.

Grade 5-7–Morpurgo frames this story with a grandmother sharing her girlhood journal with her grandson and a letter explaining what she has recently done. In the main story, Lily is 12 in 1943 and lives in southern coastal England. The war brings a foreign teacher, American soldiers, evacuees from London, and the sound of warplanes to their rural area. The girl's family is forced to move from their farm to an uncle's so the army can use their land to practice sea landings. A boy evacuee moves in with them. Lily's rocks during this unsettled time are her cat, Tips, and the friendship she strikes up with a black American soldier, Adolphus, better known as Adie. Decades later, Lily sees Adie and his son on the beach. Their friendship is rekindled and, after her husband's death, she visits him in Atlanta, GA. As the story ends in the present, she tells her grandchild that she and Adie have just married and that she is bringing him home to London with her. Interesting, if slight, WWII story with a clumsy narrative device

The heart of this novel is a sweet story of World War II set in the Devon community of Slapton Sands. It's told from a refreshing, unique perspective of a child on the British home front; this setting is particularly interesting, since it gives a glimpse into the Allies' preparations for D-Day.

Lily, the main character, misses her father, who has gone off to fight. She's also worried about her cat, Tips, who can't be found in time to take her along when the family is evacuated from their home in order to allow for military exercises, as Allied forces prepare for the D-Day landing.

Storylines involving Lily's family taking in a displaced boy from London and befriending two African-American soldiers are handled with subtlety and grace.

Unfortunately, the novel is framed by a modern-day narrative involving Lily's grandson, Michael. The framing piece is clumsy and unnecessary, and seems as though it was added in order to allow the author to tie up some loose ends without significantly lengthening the story. Sadly, it doesn't really work. I'd have much preferred to read more about Lily in the 1940s and less about her in the present.

Try a different Lily, in _Lily's Crossing_, by Patricia Reilly Giff, for a much more sophisticated World War II story of a young girl on the home front who makes an unexpected friendship.

A fascinating and informative story on life during World War II

Michael had been close to his grandmother all of his life. So when she promises to write him a letter while on her mysterious trip, he believes her. Yet when the letter arrives, even Michael finds surprise at her incredible news. To help explain her shocking announcement, Michael's grandmother, Lily, also includes pages from her girlhood journal.

The journal begins on September 10, 1943 when Lily is 12 years old. She lives on a farm in England with her mother, father, grandfather and beloved cat, Tips. The war is tearing the world apart, yet it hasn't affected Lily personally until her father joins the British Military and ships off to who knows where. Then Lily's lack of involvement quickly changes.

A temporary refugee in her school comes to live on the farm with Lily, and she finds that she kind of likes having a little brother. And then Lily meets some soldiers from America and becomes friends with a fellow named Adie. But all too soon the tragedies of war become clear when her teacher's husband is killed in action. And then the war really hits home when Lily's town is forced to evacuate so that the soldiers can practice sea-side landings on the beach. When the day arrives for Lily's family to move down the road to her uncle's farm, Tips disappears!

Lily is devastated. She can't leave behind her best friend, but she must. She swears though that nothing will stop her from looking for her cat --- not even the danger signs, the barbed wire fencing, the soldiers' dogs, or the exploding bombs. She will find Tips no matter what.

THE AMAZING STORY OF ADOLPHUS TIPS is indeed amazing. Mostly written in journal formation, readers get a firsthand and very personal look at World War II from a 12-year-old's point of view. Lily's tears and fears and joys are expertly deployed by the author, Michael Morpurgo. He also adds a bit of humor and adventure, making this story a joy to both genders and any age group.

Wonderful!

In 1943, twelve-year-old Lily Tregenza lives on a farm in a seaside village in England. Her father is away fighting in WWII and kids from town are attending her school, but otherwise her life is untouched by the war. One day the villagers are told they have to move completely out of their homes so the area can be used for military training.

Long before Lily is ready, the area is out of bounds as Allied forces practice their landings for D-day, preparing to invade France. But Tips, Lily's adored cat has disappeared. And nothing--barbed-wire fences, nor the danger of guns or bombs, are going to deter Lily. Frantic to find Tips, Lily makes friends with two American soldiers who offer to help...but will Lily ever see her beloved cat again?

Many years later after WWI ended, Michael is reading his grandmother Lily's diary and he learns about the war and about Lily's cat disappearing. He wonders how one cat could still affect their lives sixty years later.

Even though The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips is written for children ages 7-10, I thoroughly enjoyed it and had a hard time keeping my teenagers away from the book long enough for me to finish it. The story is set during WWII and is so realistic I wonder if it might be based on a true story. I couldn't help but relate with Lily as she is desperate to find her beloved pet and as she tries to adjust to the forced changes that the war is making on her family.

I highly recommend The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips, and my only complaint is that it's too short. I would have liked to have read more. Michael Morpurgo is a talented author, able to bring the setting and the characters to life.

About the Author

Judith Kerr was born in Berlin, the daughter of a distinguished German writer. She left Germany with her family in 1933 to escape the Nazis and they arrived in England in 1936, having spent the intervening years in Switzerland and France. She is married to Nigel Kneale and they have two children.

Good book for my grandson whose household includes cats with ;personality

A fun and clever book

I love this book. My son loves it, we have owned it from when he was about 2 1/2. He is now 4 1/2yo. The length was fine for reading aloud to his preschool class of 4yo's. I love to give Mog books as gifts.
The illustrations are beautiful and highlight certain aspects of the storyline.
This is a typical Mog story where she brings on some funny antics and it all works out well in the end.
I wasn't completely sure if my son understood the joke at the end but he does. I'm not sure what age he was when he caught on. Maybe I underestimated him.
So, the story is that Mog wants a different supper to usual. Mr Thomas is grumpy and says that Mog has been offered two suppers and is not to be offered anything more. In fact, if she doesn't eat both those suppers then she will not be given breakfast in the morning. So Mog is mad and goes outside, falls asleep, wakes to find foxes eating from the bins. She goes in through her cat flap and the foxes follow her. They start playing and eating in the kitchen so Mog leaves the kitchen. In the morning the children wake and go downstairs to see if Mog has eatten her supper and find the foxes and a huge mess. The foxes leave, the children clean everything up. Just then the parents enter (a clean, fox-free kitchen) and see Mog's two suppers have been eatten. Unaware of the foxes, they assume Mog has eatten them and are happy to give her her breakfast. The children remain silent, after all no-on could be sure who ate Mog's food.

About the Author
Amanda Geary, a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists, was the originator of The Food and Mood Project. She facilitated the workshops on a voluntary basis. Amanda gained her diploma in Nutritional Counselling from the Raworth Centre, International College for Sports Therapy and Natural Medicine in Surrey, England in 1991. She is also a qualified and experienced practitioner of reflexology and aromatherapy and is currently studying for the MSc in Complementary Therapy Studies at the University of Westminster, London. Amanda has much experience of treating ME/CFS with nutritional therapy. She consults at private clinics in Brighton and Lewes, Sussex and also at the Children's Clinic in Brighton.

Give this book a chance and you will be pleasantly surprised...

First off, I want to respond to the person that gave this book a low rating. I am sorry that it was not what you had expected however everyone has a different opinion on books as to what is a good read for them or not. I will share my experience after reading this book.

The Food and Mood Handbook by Amanda Geary was one of my first introductions into the area of food and mood and in learning about exactly how much diet can impact on your mental health. As someone who used to suffer terribly with PMS, finding anything that might relieve my symptoms was an ongoing task for me and I know diet has a huge effect on premenstrual problems, especially mine!

Geary's book is an excellent manual in learning how to eat a nutritious diet that can help relieve mental health symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and generalized mood swings. She herself had struggled for many years with severe depression and mental health problems, and after years of medication, it was only when her diet changed that her depression was finally dealt with. So Geary wrote this book, after training to become a nutritionist, in order to provide a guide on good mood foods.

There is a huge amount of explanation into how the brain works in conjunction with food and what types of neurotransmitters are needed and produced when we eat certain types of food. The book also talks about foods which sustain blood sugar levels, and which can promote the production of `good mood' chemicals in the brain.

Like Geary, I agree that a lot of mental health problems that exist could be relieved simply by changing diet and if all else has failed, why not alter the diet in order to see if it can help? Even better, why not change the diet first, before resorting to medication? This is an excellent book and worth reading even if good nutrition is simply your interest.

Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, written towards the end of the First World War, introduced us to Hercule Poirot, who was to become the most popular detective in crime fiction since Sherlock Holmes. She is known throughout the world as the Queen of Crime. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott.

Mostly fantasy, not mystery

Where I know the original magazine publication dates, I have given them. Each story has also appeared in either THE WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION AND OTHER STORIES or THE GOLDEN BALL AND OTHER STORIES.

"The Red Signal" (June 1924) Dermot and his uncle Sir Alington West (the famous psychologist) become involved in a discussion of premonitions at the Trents' dinner party. Dermot has had a few in his life - a 'red signal' for danger - while Sir Alington attributes them to subconscious observation. But tonight Dermot feels it again - although the only danger he can see is his love for Claire Trent, his best friend's wife.

"The Fourth Man" (December 1925) An Anglican canon, a psychologist, and a lawyer - all very distinguished representatives of the Church, Medicine, and the Law - fall to talking on a night train journey, ignoring the (apparently sleeping) man who also shares their compartment. While the viewpoint of the man in the street may have some merit, surely their own collective wisdom is good enough for the celebrated multiple personality case they're discussing...

"S.O.S." (February 1926) The Dinsmead family - pompous father, worn-down mother, and their 3 grown children - moved to a lonely country home rather abruptly upon Mr. Dinsmead's retirement from the building trade. Johnnie is suffering a series of running battles with his father, since he prefers chemistry to building, while his sisters are unhappy at being isolated in a house they think is haunted. Then a stranger (parapsychologist Mortimer Cleveland), stranded for the night by a flat tire, finds a mysterious message written in the dust beside his bed...

"Wireless", a.k.a. "Where There's a Will" (1926) Mary Harter's physician was careful to warn both his patient and her nephew, Charles Ridgeway, about her heart condition - that any shock could be fatal, but with care nothing would go wrong. When she then had a lift installed, thoughtful Charles persuaded her to get a radio as well. She enjoyed it at first, until it started giving messages from Beyond...

"The Call of Wings" - Silas Hamer was rich and content, a self-made man who had wanted wealth for material comfort rather than power, who believed in nothing that he couldn't see and touch. Then the music of panpipes, played by a strange, legless beggar with a beautiful face, catches his imagination, and he feels a call of immense freedom and wildness - but his money has turned to chains and shackles.

"The Gipsy" - Macfarlane (a Celt with a touch of second sight) and his best friend Dickie Carpenter were engaged to two sisters, until Esther dumped Carpenter without warning. But when Carpenter, an inarticulate, unsubtle Navy man, unburdens himself to his friend, he keeps getting off track, talking about his fear of gypsies, and how several times in his life he's literally had a gypsy's warning and disregarded it, only to have disaster strike - as in the case of his breakup, in fact.

"The Hound of Death" - Really a science fiction story. Sister Marie Angelique once saved her convent from the Germans by calling down lightning on them, but not through prayer; she has visions of another life, whether future or past, where such powers were understood and disciplined. Alas, Dr. Rose at the sanitarium where she now lives in England not only takes her seriously, but with an eye to turning such powers to his own use...

"The Lamp" - When Mr. Winburn, his widowed daughter Mrs. Lancaster, and his little grandson Geoff take #19 for a ridiculously low rent, she doesn't believe it's haunted, although a little boy starved there 30 years ago (having been ordered never to go out) after his father's arrest in another city. But her father hears the boy crying, and Geoff can see him and wants to help him. The title comes from Widburn's quotation of a poem, since he's convinced Geoff may indeed be able to help: "'What Lamp has Destiny to guide/Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?'/'A blind understanding,' Heaven replied."

"The Last Seance", a.k.a. "The Stolen Ghost" - Raoul Daubreuil takes it for granted that his fiancee Simone will give up her work as a medium after they're married - for one thing, it's destroying her health. But will the work - and her clients - allow her to retire gracefully? Clients like Madame Exe, who is determined to make contact with her lost little girl at any price...

"The Mystery of the Blue Jar" - Jack Hartington lives to reduce his golf handicap. Unfortunately, he's only 24 and far from retired, so he gets up at six every morning for an hour's practice before work. Then he starts hearing cries for help every morning near a small cottage near the course - cries nobody else seems to hear.

"The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael" - Sometimes titled 'Andrew' rather than 'Arthur' - one heck of a printer's error. The old baronet had 2 sons, and the pleasant Sir Arthur has been content to allow his middle-aged stepmother and little half-brother to go on living with him. She, for her part, is devoted to her own son, and has an uncanny air about her. Then, a month before young Sir Arthur's marriage, he's stricken with an extraordinary form of amnesia, and the narrator (a distinguished psychologist) is called in. Hmm. His stepmother certainly has a motive to see that he has no heir other than her son, but how could she have arranged *this*?

Stories of the supernatural (mostly)

This short story collection contains 12 stories, most of them having to do with the supernatural in some way. The most famous entry, and one that has no supernatural elements to it, is "Witness for the Prosecution," which was later made into a well-received movie starring Charles Laughton. In it a young man is accused of murdering an elderly woman for her money; he has an air-tight alibi with his mistress, but on the witness stand she turns against him. His lawyer has his hands full, but finally finds a way to prove his innocence. Other good stories include "The Red Signal," about a death warning revealed in a séance; "S.O.S," about a dusty night table and a scrawled message for help; and "The Fourth Man," about a girl with four distinct personalities. Many of the stories were later re-published in a collection renamed after its most famous story, "Witness for the Prosecution." Fans of Agatha Christie's typical crime stories might be disappointed with this story collection, but there are still some interesting selections in it.

Agatha Christie failed to inspire

Trying her hand at writing into occultism and supernatural subjects, Agatha Christie failed to provoke new insights nor deliver any entertainment value.
Several stories were outrightly occultic, such as the Hound of Death. These have got nothing to do with crimes.
A couple of other stories such as the Blue Jar have some crime involved, and could be considered readable.
What mystery and crime readers would normally expect from Agatha Christie was a thorough investigation of the paranormal, sifting the clues and evidence, and exhaust all possibilities before leaving it as ... unexplainable by known facts. Had Agatha Christie done that, the stories would have been much much more readable.

Another Cohen Classic!

I purchased Fear Busting after devouring Pete Cohen's last No1 Best Seller 'Shut the duck up' (STDU).
STDU helped me control the nagging voice that kept me awake in the early hours of the morning,normally 4am!

Fear Busting is an equally scintillating read. Once again written in simple to understand language this book teaches easy to implement strategies for dealing with the fear that holds us back or stop us from taking action. The strategies can be used irrespective of the situation we fear so no matter what fears anyone is facing right now 'Fear Busting' is a must have addition to your Kindle Book Shelf. Thank you Pete - you are a star!

Fear busting, my thoughts

Pete, I really enjoyed reading this. It was light and easy to read, but looked at a topic that is very difficult for people to deal with who have that problem. I especially liked chapter 10, when it talked about nurses dealing with fear because I really related to it. Your words have also helped me to think about personal fears that I have and how to deal with them. I am also tempted to come and ask you for some individual advice! But I'll see how I manage with the information I have.

My only criticism is that you need to do a spell check and proof read as there are a few mistakes in the text, especially at the beginning.

Keep working hard, and my thoughts go to you and Hannah often , all the best,
