In addition to the best-selling Bloodline of the Holy Grail, he wrote Realm of the Ring Lords and Lost Secrets of the Sacred Ark. Very readable to people familiar with the subject

This book follows up on Mr Gardner's Bloodline of the Holy Grail, and Baigent, Lincoln and Leigh's Hold Blood, Holy Grail. The relationship of Jesus with Mary, and the bloodline of Jesus both through his brothers and sisters, and through offspring of Mary's marriage to Jesus.

The book claims to be a Stand Alone volume but in reality I would suggest certainly reading first one of the two books mentioned earlier, and also Barbara Thierings Jesus the Man. Without some background research this book hits you with a set of ideas which will quickly be dismissed by the casual reader concerning things like names relating to statuses, and how the same person is referred to under different names in different places, and how to know why they have undergone these name changes. It can be baffling to say the least, although a great example of how this still happens today is that a certain Joseph Ratzinger is now called Pope Benedict XVI.

What it also does is expand on how and why Mary Magdalene's name was suppressed, and then repressed, and who stood to gain from this. The politics behind it, and that's exactly what it is, shows that even back through the centuries the people in power were skilled manipulators of what the masses were told.

When it boils down to it, the bloodline theory is pretty much the same as many other theories about bloodlines, this version was given in the first book on this subject adequately enough, and the idea is used in the Da Vinci Code book which basically was a rewrite of the 2 books mentioned above. The break down of the artwork is also covered in a book exceptionally well called Tomb of God, by Richard Andrews and Paul Schellenberger.

Having read many books on this subject I found this easy to read, mainly because it was just covering old ground for me, and it refreshed points I already knew. However, I say again, if your reading this coming straight from Dan Browns work of fiction, I think to get a better feel of what's being told here, to grasp that this story is purportedly factual, you may well need other materials to traverse the gap and break through the ideas that have been drilled into people from birth by a culture still manipulated by religion today

Good writing but too many errors

Laurence Gardner is an excellent writer, and who doesn't like a good story, especially a conspiracy. The problem is that his latest book, The Magdalene Legacy isn't meant to be a novel, but an historical text. As such, it falls way short of even the most minimal standards. There are two main problems with Gardner's text: the plethora of errors and the theories that he presents as facts. Here's some examples:

* "In the NT Gospels, various female companions of Jesus are cited on seven occasions (p. 1)". Not true. The lists occur at Mark 15:40, 15:47, and 16:1, Matthew 27:55, 27:59, and 28:1, Luke 8:1 and 24:10, and John 19:25. That's 9 lists, not 7.

* "Magdala was a fishing town on the Sea of Galilee (p. 9)." By all accounts, there never was a city called Magdala. The city Gardner refers to had many names, including Magadan, Dalmanutha, Taricheae, and Migdal Nunaiya, but never Magdala.

* "She [Mary] anointed him with spikenard oil on two separate occasions (p. 16)." In fact there is only one anointing, described differently in all four gospels, but nonetheless only one.

* "They [the Hebrews] also objected strongly to the fact that Jesus wanted to share access to the Jewish God with Gentiles (p. 29)." Of course we can't be sure where Gardner gets this information, but his comment flies in the face of Matthew 10:5 ("Go not in the way of the Gentiles, and into the city of the Samaritans enter ye not"), Galatians 4:4 ("God sent forth his son...to redeem those who were under the law"), Matthew 15:24 ("...I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel"), etc.

* Talking about the Talpoit ossuaries, Gardner claims that "the ossuaries were individually inscribed...Mary...Joseph...and Mary (p. 33)." In fact these ossuaries were inscribed Marya, Yose, and MariamnekaiMara, and there is considerable opinion that none of the females refer to family members of Jesus, since they are not written in Aramaic, but instead in Latin and Greek.

* "Herod was an Idumaean Arab (p. 56)." Herod was a Jew from Idumea, not an Arab.

* "...the Essenes evolved from their Hasidic base to become a monastic, Egyptian-style healing community known as the Therapeutate (p. 57)." The Therapeuts were a completely separate sect, as Philo and Josephus both indicate. It's true that they had many similarities with the Essenes, but they were different.

Beyond these obvious errors, Gardner seeks to rewrite history to his own curriculum. For example:

* "...Nero, who had executed Peter and Paul (p. 22)." Of course it's possible, but it surely isn't history. We have no idea how Peter and Paul died, and while it is commonly believed that Peter perished in Rome, Paul is said to have died in Spain. Apparently Gardner has access to facts no one else has.

* "...in Antiquities of the Jews, Josephus refers to Jesus again...(p. 31)." Virtually every Josephus scholar agrees this is a later addition by Christians and not original to Josephus.

* "The Nazarenes were a sub-sect of the Essenes (p. 53)." That's certainly possible, but many scholars consider these two groups are separate groups.

* "...when the priestly caste of Hasmonaean Maccabees (Mary Magdalene's ancestors)...(p. 56)." No one knows who Mary Magdalene's ancestors were. This is Gardner's theory, but he presents it as fact, with no documentation.

* "The Essene community was referred to as Nazrie ha Brit and it was from this name that the term Nazarene derived (p. 53)." That's also possible, but there are a half dozen other theories about the origins of the term.

You get the idea. All these errors and the re-writing of history should not suggest that Gardner's book is completely worthless. There's lots of interesting information about ancestral lineage and artwork, and occasionally he gets it right about Mary Magdalene.

The book has excellent illustrations, many of them in full color. It has a long list of footnotes and a good reference list. In addition there is an appendix with lots of good material, although mostly about Jesus. And, of course, there is a genealogical chart.

Beginning students should steer clear of this book. It's too difficult for them to distinguish between the errors and the facts. But anyone with a good knowledge of the life and times of Mary Magdalene will be able to sort through the nonsense to get to some of the useful contributions that Gardner offers.

Great source material for truth seekers

Sir Laurence Gardner does a commendable job in researching Christianity's most controversial secret. Building on his earlier "Bloodline of the Holy Grail", this book focuses on Mary Magdalene's pivotal role in bringing the Davidic bloodline to Europe.

Gardner bolsters the case for Jesus having been married by drawing upon the historical background of the Essene community, and using it to "decode" the Gospel accounts of the birth and life of Jesus. The result is a dramatically new picture of Jesus, integrated into a realistic historical context. Jesus emerges as a leader aware of his prophetic expectations, but radical in his determination to treat Mary Magdalene and other women as equals. The suggestion is made that this issue may have helped fuel the eventual split between Gnostic Christianity and the misogynic version which ultimately prevailed in Rome.

As one would expect, there are numerous footnotes, but there are annoying lapses where the author states a ground-breaking premise without any reference to back it up. The reader is left wondering if should be taken as pure speculation, or whether Sir Laurence is trying to "slip one past us" by stating his conclusion as an "obvious" fact. Other minor lapses include the assertion that the Catholic church continued to edit the Bible until a few hundred years ago (modern English translations are based on the oldest available manuscripts).

Another weak spot comes when he tries to force some rather curious interpretations on scripture, such as "the restitution of all things" in Acts 3:21 being taken to signify the end of a 3-year period of celibacy following the birth of Jesus' daughter. This may constitute an important new understanding of scripture, but it needs to be developed further.

Overall, Sir Laurence has done a creditable job in researching and presenting the material. He exploits his experience in art restoration to offer some background and commentary on the paintings highlighted in Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code".

Traditionalist Christians may even find solace in the historical existence of Jesus being presented in a manner which weaves itself into the solid fabric of European history.

Holly Jolly Mysteries Abound in Merry Olde England

Agatha Christie serves up mayhem in six well-plotted stories. Originally released in 1960 at a time when an annual "Christie for Christmas" had become an anticipated tradition for the reading public, the famous author broke with tradition and gave readers a novella length new Poirot tale which was used for the title and combined it with four older Poirot stories and one older Miss Marple story.

"The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding," according to the author's own foreword, recalls the pleasurable Christmases of her own at her brother-in-law's home (Abney Hall) in the north of England. Christie was enchanted by huge country house Christmases that included stockings at the bed in the morning, the Church service with all the Christmas hymns, a dinner of gargantuan proportions, presents, and the final Lighting of the Tree. Even in her older years, this was still a wonderful memory to her so she dedicated this book to the hostess who gave her such fond memories. In this tale Poirot experiences these same treats as he pursues a red ruby stolen by a young woman who has stolen it and the affections of a prince betrothed to a woman in his own country. In a secondary plot, the master sleuth also manages to intervene in the romance of his host's granddaughter and avert a practical joke in the form of a mock murder.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest," is a longer version of "The Mystery of the Baghdad Chest," originally published in 1939. In this Poirot and his erstwhile companion Hastings become involved in the murder of a man whose stabbed body is found stuffed inside the elaborate chest of a man rumored to be the lover of the dead man's wife.

"The Under Dog," originally published in 1951, concerns Lily Margrave, paid companion to Lady Astwell. She seeks Poirot's help in solving the murder of her employer's husband who has been killed in the tower of his estate. Though all circumstances point to a nephew who has argued with the deceased, the widow is sure someone else killed her husband.

"Four and Twenty Blackbirds," originally published in 1950, is the tale of a murder concerning eating habits. While dining one evening, Poirot notices a lone man whom he discovers has been eating at this restaurant every Tuesday and Thursday night for a decade. When he learns the diner came in on Monday night the week before, his little gray cells are activated and he is soon on the trail of a murder.

"The Dream," originally published in 1939, features a reclusive and eccentric millionaire who summons Poirot to his home to interpret his recurring nightmare of committing suicide. An usual request for the dapper detective, but one which he handles with aplomb.

"Greenshaw's Folly" had appeared previously in a magazine in 1957 but this is its first publication in book form. It is also the lone Miss Marple story in this collection. Raymond West, Miss Marple's novelist nephew, is travelling with a literary critic whose hobby is collecting architectural monstrosities on film. The two visit Greenshaw's Folly, a hideous Victorian mansion now occupied by Miss Greenshaw, a spinster who is the last of the Greenshaw family. West arranges for his wife's niece to help Miss Greenshaw edit her grandfather's diaries and while doing so, the niece witnesses the brutal murder-by-arrow of Miss Greenshaw. The gardener, an avid archery buff, is accused, but it will take Miss Marple's acute perceptions of people to solve this murder.

"Don't Eat None of the Plum Pudding..."

"The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" may not be the most auspicious title for an Agatha Christie novel, particularly when one takes into account her tendency for high body counts and gory deaths, but the subtitle "and a selection of entrees" reveals Christie's intentions for this particular short-story anthology. "Christmas Pudding" is just a bit of fun, dedicated to the memory of her Christmases spent as a child at her brother-in-law's house.

The six stories here are long enough to be described as novellas, with the first five starring Christie's most famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and the sixth featuring her spinster sleuth Miss Jane Marple. All the stories are vintage Christie, though they contain more of a romantic air this time around, with stories that feature stolen rubies, Spanish chests, precognitive dreams, hypnotism, tower rooms, and old run-down estates.

In "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding" Hercule Poirot is called away from his cozy winter apartment in order to spend Christmas with the Lacey family. The police have reason to believe that the priceless ruby, stolen from a foolish Indian prince, will turn up in this particular household. Begrudgingly, Poirot accepts the invitation and is introduced to the Lacey family - which includes a group of children who plan a "murder" for their guest. It doesn't take a stroke of genius to guess where the missing ruby ends up. All that Poirot has to deduce is how it got there, and how the children can help in the capture of the culprit.

"The Mystery of the Spanish Chest" deals with the gruesome discovery of a body inside the titular chest. Mr Clayton was stabled to death at some point during a soiree taking place at Major Rich's apartment, at the same time he was meant to have been called away to Scotland on business. All the evidence points to Major Rich, especially since he's in love with Mr Clayton's beautiful wife Margharita - but Poirot is not so convinced he's the murderer. Perhaps Shakespeare's "Othello" holds the key...

A lady's companion's reluctance in summoning Poirot to a murder scene only piques his interest in the case, and he travels to the house of the Astwells to investigate the death of the bad-tempered Sir Rueben Astwell. Once again, there is a suspect to whom all the evidence points, but the victim's wife insists that it was her husband's secretary that is responsible - her intuition is never wrong! But the case itself seems clueless, and Poirot has to resort to several psychological games in order to unearth the murderer.

"Four and Twenty Blackbirds" and "The Dream" are the two shortest stories in the anthology, and the most simplistic. In the first Poirot is intrigued over the tale of a long-time patron at a certain restaurant suddenly changing his dinner order for no discernable reason, something casts suspicion over his death a few days later; in the latter Poirot is summoned to a wealthy businessman's office in order to discuss the precognitive power of dreams. Benedict Farley has been having a reoccurring dream each night in which he shoots himself in the head at exactly twenty-eight minutes past three. Poirot is at a loss to explain the phenomena to his client, but sure enough, Mr Farley commits suicide just a few days later. Did the dream come true, or was something even more sinister at work?

Finally, "Greenshaw's Folly" moves from Mr Poirot to Miss Marple. Whilst staying with her nephew Raymond West, Miss Marple gets a secondhand account from his wife of the strange occurrences at Greenshaw's Folly, the ramshackle old estate that bankrupted its original owner. With something of a turf war going on between the housekeeper and the gardening boy, Mrs West tries to keep her head down as she organizes old Mrs Greenshaw's memoirs. To her horror she is witness to the old woman's murder, watching helplessly from within a locked room as Mrs Greenshaw is shot dead with an arrow. All possible suspects have an alibi - so whodunit?

These are not Christie's finest by any means. The culprit of "Christmas Pudding" is so obvious that it becomes a case of how rather than who, and Miss Marple's solution to "Greenshaw" seems to have been pulled out of a hat. But you can tell that Christie had a lot of fun with these particular mysteries, especially the first, where the warmth and fun of a typical English Christmas has been drawn straight out of her own memories. There are numerous cameos from various side-characters, including Miss Lemon the efficient secretary, George the devoted manservant, Raymond West the successful novelist and Doctor Stillingfleet (who pops up again in Third Girl), and because of the relative simplicity of the plots, many readers may find that Christie is unable to pull a fast one on them - so long as they pay careful attention to the clues.

Another brilliant book

This book is well worth reading if you are a fan of Agatha Christies, Hercule Poirot. Poirots first taste of a traditional English Christmas ends in him solving the disappearance of a Princes ruby. After recieving a sinister note warning him not to eat the Christmas Pudding, a mysterious visitor in the night and his host nearly choking on the Christmas Pudding he sets a trap for his suspect and a joke on the children of the household. Not only in this story does Poirot retrieve a stolen ruby but he also helps his hosts to rid themselves of a problem of their own. This is a brilliant book and well worth the read.

Provides a great overview of Coelho's life

This book is based on a series of interviews that Juan Arias conducted with Paulo Coelho back in 1998. It provides a lot of information about the legendery author and his struggles, including experimentation with drugs and magic, being put into a mental hospital by his parents when he was a young man, and his kidnapping by paramilitaries. I also really liked how the book described Coelho's transformation after his pilgrimage on The Road to Santiago, and what he hopes his books accomplish. All in all, Coelho has had a very interesting life and reading this book will give you a better understanding of the messages he conveys to his readers.

Simple and Effective Method

The Emotional Freedom Technique described for self-help in this book is surprisingly effective for a wide range of problems. It is based in the fairly new understanding that negative emotional patterns are symptoms of disturbances in the energy merdians of the body. With EFT we can intervene and correct these disturbances and imbalances directly - at the energy level - through specific acupressure points. Since energy is then free to flow naturally, healing of emotional issues often leads to physical healing and an increased over-all sense of well-being.

Such claims of rapid emotional healing may sound too good to be true, as we come from an orientation of traditional counseling, congnitive, analytical, and 'reliving the pain' psychotherapies. However, these approaches are rarely as effective as we would wish. One only needs to try these new energy methods for oneself to discover their power to create quick and lasting results.
I am certain that energy healing systems are the wave of the future.

No Technique is More Effective Than This

I have studied hundreds of different techniques for releasing emotional negativity and trauma (both eastern and western). This book and the techniques within it are leagues ahead and more powerful than any others I have found.

If you are looking for happiness, release of depression, release of additictions, healing of past emotional trauma -- even letting go of big stuff like issues around childhood, deep grief, or anger/rage/sadness/depression ... then this book is your fastest path to getting there. The technique is easy to do and I found I achieved results in minutes/hours as opposed to months/years of psychotherapy or other techniques.

I have used this technique with great success for over 10 years, but it was only 3 years ago that I came across this book -- it is an iteration of the original concept of the people who developed/discovered the technique -- I like the Author's simplification of the process, and have found it to be just as powerful but a lot more simple than other iterations.

This author has given every person the gift of emotional healing. It does not require changing your beliefs (even if you don't think the process will work, it will). It does not require positive affirmations. It does not require months of processing and drama. It does not even require that much of your time (you can literally do a session in < 15 minutes...though it depends on what you are trying to release).

The only thing the reader must do is be willing to WANT to shift emotionally. That is a big step to take for many in our society who prefer to be unhappy rather than take responsibility for themselves.

I highly recommend this book be read and used immediately !!! I really hope it becomes a bestseller -- it should be one. It is a revolutionary process. It may very well put psychologists and psychotherapists out of business. If all of us used this technique, we could change the world.

Never Rec'd

We are very disappointed in this book store, they are extremely unhelpful. They sent us a book instead of the audio cassette that we ordered. We paid about $14.00 for shipping (the book is not in good condition and not worth much. They haven't said wither they would send the item that we were promised. They take a long time to answer e-mails. I have ordered through amazon before and if there were problems they were handled quickly and professionally. This book store was rude and I will never order from them again.

Educational, Enlightened and Insightful

After reading a great deal about Paganism, Earth Traditions and Wicca, Vivianne's book was the first that gave a me a sense of who I was and what I believe Pagan practice should stand for. Many others would have you think theirs is the 'only way' even amongst many Pagans or Wiccan practitioners. Vivianne manages to give a wonderful overview of many of the worlds Earth Traditions or Pagan beliefs, respecting each for the underlying spiritual truths they contain.
With her approachable, open style of illumination she manages to make the reader feel comfortable with their own inutitive connection to the Divine. A quote found in her book reads:
'To Dispute the religion (Dharana) of another
is the mark of a narrow mind
Oh Lord! Oh Great Magician!
With whatsoever faith or feeling we call on Thee
Thou art pleased.'
Despite the title, I didn't find it exclusively women orientated. I'd love my husand to read it! Well done Vivianne, you certinaly helped me greatly along my spiritual path.
