If you enjoyed the first Jack Steel books then there is really no way you will not enjoy this one. Our hero gets into all sorts of acts of derring-do and emerges triumphant at the end. No spoiler there: what else did we expect?
The usual list of bold hero types and absolute scoundrels appear and action, conflict scenes are again, well presented.
Carry on Jack! Waiting for the next instalment.

The Foot Book is a delightful tribute to the diverse and multifaceted world of feet. Not merely a realm of ankles, arches, and toes--as this self-proclaimed "Wacky Book of Opposites" attests--the podiatry province welcomes all kinds: "Slow feet/Quick feet/Well feet/Sick feet." Dr. Seuss has put his best foot forward here, in a whimsical approach to showcasing opposites. Wet feet contrast dry feet, and low feet contrast high feet. Though hot feet and cold feet aren't specifically referenced, we get the sense that those are okay too. As usual, the rhymes are quick and quirky, and Seuss's illustrations will knock kids' socks off. (Baby to preschool)

I was so disapointed in this book! My son (at age 2) loved this book in the original form we had; but he was a bit rough on it & I had to tape our copy a few times! So I searched everywhere for a board book version, and was so happy when I found one. I bought it without reading it first (which I almost never do) and was so disapointed in the quality! The pictures are poorly drawn (I think some of them may even be drawn by someone other than Dr. Seuss? maybe the original drawings could not be reprinted or something) and the rhymes were changed. They are awkward and I can't see why they needed to be changed in the first place! For example, changing "Feet in the morning...Feet at night" to "Feet in the day...Feet in the night". This is poor english, and what was wrong with it the way Dr. Seuss wrote it? Twice, they changed "Feet, feet, feet...how many, many feet you meet" to "how many different feet you meet". Again, why? It just sounds better the other way. And finally, why change "slow feet..quick feet...trick feet...sick feet" to "well feet"? It doesn't even make sense- what are Well Feet? The picture is a dog juggling balls- doing a "trick"! I am surprised that the Seuss trustees, who are usually so protective of Dr. Seuss' work would OK this book.

Bah.

My niece loved it, but I'm hiding this version now that I've gotten her the *real* version. Stupid editors, changing the text, cutting stuff out, just to make a board book.

Forgo this copy, just get the hardcover edition. You'll thank me later when you don't have to figure out why they forced an "opposites" theme on poor Dr. Seuss, or why they cut out some of the best passages.

Another solid entry in the Martin Beck series

I have recently become a fan of this series of twelve detective novels, written in the late 1960's and early 1970's in Sweden by husband and wife team Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo. Wahloo, who died in 1975, did some reporting and the no-nonsense style of these novels reminds one of good reporting.
The Locked Room is somewhat unique to the series, in that the authors frequently shift their focus to the minor characters and criminals, in omniscient narrator style, giving the reader more perspective than is usual. The novel involves two crimes, a bold bank robbery in which a bank customer is killed, and the discovery of a retired man's decomposed body in his apartment, which appears to be locked from the inside. Beck, who recently returned to the force after recovering from a shooting, is assigned the locked room case and we see him trying to fit the pieces together of a seemingly impossible crime to solve.
A NY Times critic has recently praised the grim realism of these novels; if Beck drinks too much coffee on an empty stomach, his gets sick. After a broad daylight bank robbery, the police get starkly different eyewitness accounts, leading to a morass of seemingly unrelated clues, some of them way off. The reader is constantly reminded that in the real world, this is how crimes are really solved by big city police forces.
Some readers are a little put off by the Socialist leanings of the authors, which rises to the surface occasionally as they discuss current events of Stockholm 30 years ago including strikes, poor health care/benefits for workers, etc. However the rantings never seemed to me to get in the way of their story, and the novels are all written in a lean, sparse style with few wasted scenes or verbal flourishes. I recommend the series highly, beginning with the great Roseanna.

Martin Beck is Still a Winner

The Locked Room by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo is not quite as strong as their wonderful The Laughing Policeman but will be a delight to any of their fans. The premise is classic murder mystery but the development is unique. The authors cut from one chararcter's perspective to another quickly and often, including many of the criminals, in a way that can be sometimes disconcerting but frequently fascinating. Their creation, Martin Beck, is the star and the book is dazzling when he is centre stage (which is not often enough, in my opinion). This is not the typical mystery nor the typical police procedural but its examination of personality and crime in seventies Sweden is captivating. This sense of time and place is so strong it becomes the core of this novel. An interesting read.

This is really Dr. Seuss's best book - some of the others, although hailed as works of absolute genius, show signs of the good doctor being somewhat high on his own supply. But here we have a book that is absolutely entertaining, and in a way educational: the dedication to educators at the Soledad Lingual Laboratories sparked my interest in linguistics when I was still very young. Whatever your age, break this book out at a party and pass it around, taking turns reading it out loud. Talk about good, clean fun! It also works well with foreigners learning English.

Cute Story Time Book

I didn't realize this book was going to be so little...it's like pocket sized. My children were excited when they saw the book because they love story time. It's the type of book they can't tear up super easily and I appreciate that. The story is super fun. I had to read it 6 times in a row before the kids would let me put it down. This is a nice addition to the kids' library.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Fox in Socks! I think this is my favorite children's book. It is such a fun read. We even get family to try to read this book without getting tongue tied. It's a great laugh watching them start from the beginning and then getting twisted with their words by the end of the book.

Great little tarot reference book

Well I bought this book to have a comprehensive tarot book that not only basic meanings for the tarot cards but also some more meaty writing and this book delivers. Written by one of the top tarot people of our time this book goes into history, different views on tarot, several different spreads, creating your own spreads, meditation and tarot, and creating your own deck among many other tarot subjects. I only have a few qualms with this book and they are very minor indeed. The book is hardcover and while adding to how sturdy it is it also makes it heavier to carry than I would wish. Also the book is an odd size (5.25 X 4.5 inches and almost 1.5 inches thick!)It would be much easier to carry if it was regular pocket book sized. Also the book is entirely in black and white and I really wish that they had gone to the added expense to do this book in color as it is such a neat book. All in all if your serious about tarot this is a great reference book for ya!

It Really IS the Only Tarot Book You May Ever Need

This book has everything -- EVERYTHING -- and that is no joke.

With that said, it still doesn't hurt to check out other books and theories and practices. Add to your knowledge and subtract if you must.

I've seen these books before -- the tiny square books that claim you'll never need another book on the subject and after reading them I've always thought "But that didn't cover EVERYTHING!" Well, this book does.

It's a bounty of knowledge, from the theory of the origin of the tarot, from how to do a reading, from which cards to buy. It even tells you how to find your soul and personality cards, how commune with the cards, and gives generous demonstrations on card layouts.

I must have stayed up three nights in a row just reading this book and taking in its knowledge. If you're serious about tarot or even if it's just a hobby, this book is for you.

Wonderful and Informative

As a beginning tarot reader, I found this book a little confusing, but the more I learned, the easier it was for me to understand. This book has everything a reader could want. It has very detailed definitions of every card in the whole 78 card deck, it shows you many tarot layouts and when to use them, and it tells you basic information for any reader, semi-beginner to advanced. Ms. Pollack also wrote a long and detailed history on tarot, throughout the ages and throughout the countries. It also gives you many good tips that I couldn't find in any other books. I learned so much from the book and it changed my life. If you need a tarot book, you should start with this one. Congratulations, Rachel Pollack!

Matt Ruff's Best Novel To Date

"Set This House In Order" is Matt Ruff's finest work of fiction to date, brilliantly adding to a splendid body of work that includes such classics as his literary debut "Fool On The Hill" and the Ayn Rand-influenced cyberpunk novel "Sewer, Gas, Electric: The Public Works Trilogy". He offers a fascinating twist on the coming-of-age tale, exploring the lives of the multiple personalities inhabiting the bodies of Andrew Gage and Penny Driver. Like Jonathan Lethem in "Motherless Brooklyn", Ruff writes eloquently and with much compassion about two characters afflicted with a severe personality disorder. None of his splendid prose lapses into cliche or melodramatic writing. It's one of the few books I have read lately that I found almost impossible to put down, compelled to read vast portions of the novel at one clip. Without a doubt, Matt Ruff has become the most distinguished writer ever to have graduated from New York City's prestigious Stuyvesant High School. He is also among my generation's most talented writers, comparable in quality to the likes of Jonathan Lethem, Jeffrey Eugenides and Michael Chabon.

The Art of Saying Goodbye helped me through a crisis

The Art of Saying Goodbye by Dr. Arthur Samuels was a tremendous help during the days and weeks after the death of my wife. I was especially impressed with the meditation techniques and the guidance Dr. Samuels provided. He says in order to survive the trauma of losing a loved one, you need to learn to love yourself all over again. I would recommend this book to anyone.
