My son still really loves TLOTR Trilogy, and wanted a book with pictures for inspiration as he enjoys drawing scenes from the books.
I only wish the book had been longer, but considering the more than fair price, he was happy, so I was happy!

What a disappointment!

I have read all the previous Paullina Simons books and found them good holiday reads but this one was such a disappointment. Firstly it could do with some serious editing, the long sections of discussion between the friends about the meaning of life just seemed over indulgent and boring and added nothing to the plot.
WARNING THIS PART OF THE REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS
The first half of the story was ok and I enjoyed the detailed account of Larissa's life but there were some major flaws in the second half after she leaves. Her decision to leave was only forced by her lover deciding in May that he wanted to leave and yet her husband later finds out that she had secretly been withdrawing money for a year in preparation for leaving when none of this had been indicated previously. I also found the lack of focus on the feelings of the children and the ease with which they seemed to have accepted her disappearance simply ludicrous. The whole part of the book set in Australia was just incredibly dull and didn't seem well written at all. Such a shame to be looking forward to a book by a previously enjoyed author and then struggle through 700+ disappointing pages hoping that the ending would somehow make up for it and then to find it didn't!!

Addictive but unsatisfying

I gulped this book over two days (thank you Mr Kindle)and it's certainly a page turner, though some pages turned much more quickly than others, I must confess, notably those with the long philosophical discussions and again the last bit where Larissa is stream of conscious-nessing her way to whatever her final fate is (left unsatisfactorily clear although by then I was a bit sick of her and hoping she would just expire in the desert beside the unlamented Kai and get it over with) The first part of the book is what grabbed me and then I kept going, although with rising irritation, to see how Ms Simmons would resolve it all. But, having inhaled it, and it does suck you in, it left a weird disgruntlement and the flaws began to prickle at my brain leaving me more irritated than anything else. Reading this book was like gobbling a whole chocolate bar - great while you're doing it but unsettling and unsatisfactory and faintly nauseating when you've finished it.
First, the relationship with Kai, after the first fine fire of passion, wasn't even remotely convincing. He just wasn't an interesting enough character to justify Larissa (educated, cultured, refined - cf all that philosophy and Shakespeare) chucking her whole life away on. And it was just not credible that her brain would be so fried by lust that she would FORGET that her dear friend was in extremis with kidney disease. Also, the children's reaction to her departure was implausibly muted: it was particularly incredible (in the not-believable sense) that the younger son, a little boy of seven or so, would be so philosophical about it and that the daughter (previously characterised as in the grip of adolescent angst) would not be more emotional. The older son becomes withdrawn but that's about as much as we are told about his response to his mother's abrupt defection.
And then there's the matter of her being too dim to sense Kai's retreat from the relationship. The final revelation of his perfidy and betrayal came as such a surprise to her that I wondered if she hadn't suffered some brain injury that impaired her perception. Oh and what was with the angst and indecision before she decided (only a week before her actual departure) to leave her husband and family but then we discover that she's been squirreling away money FOR A YEAR, and has got herself a new passport and drivers licence in advance of going. Not very consistent plotting there. And, boy, did I get sick of the roll call/checklist of her designer apparel and accessories (which luxuries and comforts she renounced with suspicious ease).
The whole Philippines interlude was also contrived and unsatisfactory; she went there, she developed a relationship with the abandoned child of her (other) so-called best friend only to do a bunk and leave this kid behind, too, (another child also seemingly not too devastated by Larissa's love-em-and-leave-em MO). And the Australia of her perception is so backward that mail takes weeks to get to Kai? Oh and give me a break that they (not to mention the private detective also seduced by the charms of the Antipodes) could be in Australia illegally FOR YEARS living and working in a high profile tourist venture (despite the fact that she and Kai had previously discussed the impossibility of living in the black economy in the US; why on earth would it be easier in Australia?)
While being curiously addictive reading, this book left me peeved and frustrated. Perhaps a more serious editing job might have lifted it from the airport novel genre into something a little more satisfactory.

Well this certainly was not what I expected and PaullinaSimons has done it again. I expected a romance novel but if your looking for a cookie cutter romance this is not it! I wouldn't even classify it as a romance, it's about making choices and what the consequences of those choices are. Larissa is a woman who has everything an ideal marriage, 3 great kids, a financially secure life and a husband who loves her. To everyone including herself everything seems ideal. Until a chance encounter with a stranger makes her question her life. From that day forward her choices will change her and her family's lives forever.

The subject matter was an interesting one, "What would you sacrifice to start over?" I would have given this 5 stars but the parts of the book where the friends contemplate the meaning of life became a bit redundant. At times I found myself skipping some of these conversations. If you've read Paullina Simons books before you will find that she does an excellent job giving you a lead character that is flawed and has to face difficult choices. This makes them more real. Overall I would recommend this book.

Abarat by Cive Barker is rife with such creatures: one man, John Mischief, has one normal head and seven “brothers,” which consist of seven other heads at the ends of antler prongs growing out from his “normal” head. In Abarat, squids become binoculars and sea-skippers offer means of aquatic transportation where none is otherwise available. Abarat, like the Chronicles of Narnia and A Wrinkle in Time, realizes that its magic must have a pure source in order to be good magic, and plays respectfully with the idea of deity. As in L’Engle’s classic, there are three mysterious and powerful wise women that make a brief appearance in Abarat, and somewhat similar to the game layout in Catching Fire, the world of the Abarat islands is sectioned into hours like an enormous clock face. But unlike L’Engle, Carroll, Lewis, and Juster, Barker seems to be far more fascinated with the macabre and grotesque.

Barker, one feels, could be best friends with Guillermo del Toro. The creatures that spout from his imagination, unlike the ones from the previously-mentioned authors, generally elicit horror and disgust. Not all of the creatures, certainly, but more of them than not. Barker is a talented writer, with a brave and engaging female protagonist named Candy, breathless and frequent action sequences, interesting philosophical lessons, and a taut thread of overarching peril throughout, but his narrative is more twisted and disturbing than many others of his genre. Genuine cruelty, not limited to abuse, appears in Abarat, although the abusive characters are certainly categorized as evil, or at least their abusive actions are. Christopher Carrion, Lord of Midnight, is happy to abuse and torture others for his own ends, but he is also terribly lonely and heartbroken, so Barker draws a very effective portrait of a complex villain who does possess significant aspects of humanity. Carrion is surrounded by visible nightmares wherever he goes, though, so his very appearance is loathsome.

One wonders whether or not Barker passed the time with recreational drugs while working on this novel, as some of his inventions are incredibly bizarre. A few are luminously unforgettable and unique word-images, though, and they will haunt the reader with wonder. The Great Head of the Yebba Dim Day, the terrifying clowns with clock-face features that rotate with the seconds, and the sinister Wolfswinkel with his ludicrous hats are worth remembering.

In addition to the horror overtones and the unique creatures of the novel, I should also mention the pacing and structure. The pacing is a trifle uneven (although of course this is true of Juster, L’engle, and Carroll as well). To be quite frank, some parts are just boring, and a separate narrative thread from Candy’s appears later in the book, introduces completely new characters, and has no intersection whatsoever with Candy’s thread except that her friendly acquaintance John Mischief is caught up with this new band of rescuers. The reason why the two threads never intersect brings us to the end of the novel: it doesn’t end. Candy simply escapes one peril and finds herself in an interlude presumably prior to the next peril. It’s a period a bit like the 100-plus pages in The Deathly Hallows in which Harry, Ron, and Hermione are camping in the woods with no idea of where they’re going or how to get there. Abarat, of course, is the first book in a series, but I found its ending a bit frustrating since I don’t intend to read the other books. Probably. Although genuinely unique and engaging, Abarat was also rather grotesque and disturbing. In the grand tradition of fantasy, of course, the original Grimm’s fairy tales were quite grisly as well, but that horror quality was mostly lent by gruesome violence engaged in by humans, not the nastiness of something unique and completely unnatural like Barker’s stitchlings, horrific little creatures stitched together like Frankenstein’s monster and filled with oozing mud.

By Aristotle’s greatness of content and execution standards, Abarat holds its own, but just. Candy, like Harry Potter, is heroic because of her kindness, courage, and cleverness, and evil characters are clearly seen as reprehensible, so the content of this work reflects truth. As far as beauty of execution, though, the pacing and narrative are a bit uneven and the compassion and courage of Candy and her friends are tiny lights enveloped in the thick darkness of characters like Carrion and the stitchlings. If you like horror fantasy, you’ll probably love Abarat. If not, you might want to skip it.

A (young) reader�s treat not to be missed

If you are looking for the most boring place on earth, you can stop your search right now: Chickentown, U.S.A. is just that kind of place. The only thing that is of any importance in this small American city is, you guessed it: chickens. But that was not always so: Candy Quackenbush, a young girl living together with her mother and her alcoholic abusive father, is preparing for her school project and about to discover the `real' history behind Chickentown. But when Miss Schwartz, her hateful school teacher, sees the final results, she is utterly disappointed: "You have not mentioned any chickens!" It is not surprising that Candy gets a very bad score. Enraged by her teacher Candy leaves school and ends up in this field right outside of town. There she meets a strange man called John Mischief, who takes her to the fantastic world of Abarat: an archipelago where every island is a different hour of the day. Not much time goes by until Candy realises that not everyone treats her as friendly as her friend John.
Abarat is the first instalment of the quartet The Books of Abarat. And that is maybe the only weakness of this book. When you finish this episode you are left with a hunger for more. It seems as though the characters were all introduced, the setting explained and the real story-line is about to start, when you discover that this is really is all you get in the first instalment. It is clearly not intended as a stand-alone book.
But that is all the negative comment I can give, because Abarat is a reader's treat. The imaginary is mind-blowing; the characters are wonderfully fascinating and the atmosphere honours Clive Barker's exceptional talent for the "fantastic". Once you enter the world of Abarat, it is not likely you will put this book down; so reserve a few hours before you start reading...

This book has absolutely nothing to do with baby-proofing your marriage, it's a series of chapters of women moaning about their husbands before, during and after child birth. It offers no form of constructive guidance about parenting or marriage. Waste of money.

This book is 12 units each of different situations. It brings together different phrases and explains everything about the usage. It is not just a travel phrase book, it is a conversation learning tool. I liked it because I can find what I need to say in seconds and then read why I would use one word vs another, or one phrase vs another.

Sigh - sucked in

By the time you get to part two, of book three, you must know that you're an addict.

On reading the series (on my kindle) I'd missed this book. So there was a massive story hole by the time I got to book four. So much so I was disappointed that GRR had moved this to back story.

Not exactly the order I wanted to read the books in, but you can't undo reading a book, and I had to complete my knowledge. Given that, I LOVED this book. All of your favourite characters appear, and are plunged into even more impossible situations than ever before.

As with all his work, you can't put it down. You have to work hard to keep in mind all of the relationships. And the thrill ride is deliciously explicit.

The problem comes when you start seeing characters in your work colleagues, and asking yourself "what would Tyrion do?" :-)

If you're a fan - get it. Read it before watching the TV series.

If you're not a fan, hardly likely you'll be reading my review :-)

Good explanation, simple to follow

This book pertains to the class I am taking for Mechanical Engineering: Material Science

The subject and material of this class is not very difficult and easy to understand. This book starts you off on some of the basics in chemistry of how bonds and energy play an impact of a microscopic level in materials. It works its way up to dislocations, stress and strain, failure, etc.

The explanations in this book goes step by step and is easy to follow. There are plenty of pictures to go along with and the examples are great. There is even online material from the Wiley website to test your knowledge and provide conceptual assistance.

The previous version of this book is very similar to this version (3rd). If you are required to buy this book but have the old one, then you may not need it. Verify with your professor before hand.

Overall, this book is pretty decent. The subject doesn't require much derivation or computing. It's a lot of memorization and conceptual thinking.

good book for the course material

Not a bad book, I did not have trouble reading through it, the only subject that could have used some more description would have been phase diagrams. I have a physics background so the book filled in a few holes about basic materials course work. The nice thing was that the book shipped fast from the particular seller.

Um, this is Annes daughter speaking, personally I am in love with this book series. The writing is perfect, just the right amount of dialog or detail and I love all the characters! So far the plot has been very interesting too! I would advise anyone with just a remote interest in horror(it's not really scary or anything but there is some gore I geuss...) to read it. I think it's especially good for kids ages 12 to 16 though. and no, just incase your a guy this is not a paranormal romance just cause it has vampires! >:(

My 7th graders like to read this series. This book has 3 of the series within (I believe books 1-3). There is another book like this with books 7-10 which I also have (I believe it is purple). I have several sets of the series for kids to read in my classroom.

A totally super book!

I like Mary-Kate and Ashley a lot, but I've never seen their TV series because I live in Spain, and they don't show them over here, I've only seen them on video tapes. So When my mom bought me this book I was really excited: 'A Mary-Kate and Ashley book! This is going to be really cool,' I thought. So one day, I started reading. Chapter one: 'Bo-ring,' I thought. So I left the book in my back-pack and I didn't touch it. But still, I didn't want to give up so fast! I wanted to know about the story...so I skipped the first chapter, and then--I LOVED the story! I kept on reading and reading...and I finished it that night!
The first chapter may sound boring, but since you know the girls are so dynamic, you know the adventure won't be just plain boring. I really recommend this book: And here's my little advice: If you think the first chapter's boring, don't let the book down, start from the second one! lol

If your lives have So Little Time, trash this book...

This is Ryoko816, telling gals to be themselves and stay away from the Olsens.
This book (first of all) has some errors from the TV show. For one thing "Sierra" is a fictional character. She's in a rock band called "The Wave" that is not in the TV show. Instead, in the TV show they have a girl called Cammie. The girl Cammie goes out with Larry in the TV show. The TRUE author (Mary-Kate and Ashley haven't written ANY of the books, Jacqueline Carrol has, i think) put Sierra as Larry's girlfriend which is WRONG! Also, the boy that Ashley meets, (Lennon) is known as Lennon Porter. His real name is Lennon Kenkade! And she doesn't meet him at a "Old Folks Home," she meets him @ the coffee shop "The Newstand!"
Anyway, the book topic is slightly down-to-earth, but yet sooooo boring. Chloe is trying to deal with a grouchy old man Mr. Simms and conceited guy Lennon who she has a slight crush on, despite his teasng of her, and Riley sets Larry up with Sierra, but then becomes jealous!
This book is very boring, first chapter and onwards. So if you have so little time in your life, don't even make eye contact with this book
MKA are known as sugary twins, and it shows. So if you REALLY want to find out what happens, read it. But I suggest watching the TV show. The TV show plot is okay, even if I say so, but poor acting a stupid laughter tracks just plain suck.
