Eidson seems to have come a cropper with this second book in a trilogy about the American frontier, which follows his widely praised debut, St. Agnes' Stand. Regurgitating a timeworn theme, the story opens in the New Mexico territory of the late 1880s, as the terminally ill Samuel Jones shows up on the doorstep of his daughter Maggie, seeking to make amends. She refuses to acknowledge him, however: 30 years earlier, Jones, a white man, had abandoned his family to live with an Apache squaw. Soon after Jones's appearance, Maggie's daughter Lily is kidnapped by the Lame One, a grotesquely deformed Apache witch. The ensuing-seemingly endless-pursuit across the desert is marked by repetitive clashes between the God-fearing Maggie and her father over his efforts to convert Maggie's younger daughter, Dot, to his pagan Indian sorcery. Numerous Indian spirits, unsurprising brushes with death and a maudlin reconciliation are but a few of the burdensome elements that ultimately swamp this hackneyed effort, which not even Eidson's impressive observations on desert ornithology can rescue.

Often reading like a fantasy novel, this absorbing work, second in a planned trilogy, solidifies Eidson's status as a new voice of the Old West. Equal in readability to his earlier novel, the acclaimed St. Agnes' Stand (LJ 3/1/94), this is highly recommended for medium to large public libraries.

Excellent characters described so well they come to life.

Tom Eidson introduces and develops two main characters in this book which even though related could not be farther apart. The struggle of a dyeing father seeking reconciliation with the daughter he abandoned as a child is the plot around which a very vivid story is built. Each character is described and developed so well that as events take place in the book one can picture the characters and the effect of the situation on them.
While having different religious and moral beliefs, Samuel (Father) and Maggie (Daughter)are bound together in a quest to free Maggie's own daughter from renegade apaches hoping to sell her and other women into slavery in Mexico.
As the story develops, each characters beliefs are tested openly and in the end there is no right or wrong beliefs, just an understanding of the similarities between the two.
While the plot and story line are common, the characters and the detail given to developing them set this book apart and make it worth reading.

Samuel Jones is dying and has ridden hundreds of miles to be able to reach his daughter Maggie's ranch so that he might die there.When she sees the old man-worn and sick-Maggie still doesn't want anything to do with him as she cannot forgive the fact that he deserted her and her mother many years before, leaving the mother to have lead a very hard life to raise her children, one of whom was born after he left.Although he was an educated man and a teacher, Samuel chose to lead the greater part of his life among the Apaches, adopting their religious beliefs, marrying and raising a family. Maggie's daughter Lily is kidnapped by an evil,deformed Indian to be sold into slavery and is herded across country with other kidnapped women to get to Mexico.Maggie, her younger daughter Dot and Jones set off after them with Maggie determined to either rescue Lily or to kill her to prevent the worse horrors which would befall her.During this arduous journey Maggie finally comes to terms with her fathers reason for leaving his family and also to accept the mystical side of his Apache beliefs
This book was recently made into a movie called The Missing, starring Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones.

Deeply Moving

I was moved to laughter and tears by this heartwarming and heartwrenching story of a dying old man who pushes himself to the limit to be reunited with his daughter and save his granddaughter from her Apache kidnappers. I was captivated right from the first page to the last, caring deeply about the characters and their predicament.
