Tree and Leaf: Including

Repackaged to feature Tolkien's own painting of the Tree of Amalion, this collection includes his famous essay, 'On Fairy-stories' and the story that exemplifies this, 'Leaf by Niggle', together with the poem 'Mythopoeia' and the verse drama, 'The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth', which tells of the events following the disastrous Battle of Maldon. Fairy-stories are not just for children, as anyone who has read Tolkien will know. In his essay On Fairy-Stories, Tolkien discusses the nature of fairy-tales and fantasy and rescues the genre from those who would relegate it to juvenilia. The haunting short story, Leaf by Niggle, recounts the story of the artist, Niggle, who has 'a long journey to make' and is seen as an allegory of Tolkien's life. The poem Mythopoeia relates an argument between two unforgettable characters as they discuss the making of myths. Lastly, and published for the very first time, we are treated to the translation of Tolkien's account of the Battle of Maldon, known as The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth. Tree and Leaf is an eclectic, amusing, provocative and entertaining collection of works which reveals the diversity of J.R.R. Tolkien's imagination, the depth of his knowledge of English history, and the breadth of his talent as a creator of fantastic fiction.

My Master's Voice
By Theoden Humphrey
I've always wanted to read Tolkien's other works; I've read the Silmarillion a couple of times, and never really enjoyed it as much as the Hobbit or LOTR. But nonetheless, I've had an old copy of a Tolkien book called Tree and Leaf for years -- it was my parents' originally -- and I finally dove into it.

It's short, only two pieces, but it was excellent -- and excellent in a way that makes me ten times more eager to look for other Tolkien ephemera than The Silmarillion ever did. The first part of this is an essay, expanded from a lecture Tolkien gave, called On Fairy-Stories. And not only was it interesting and well-written, it had some absolutely brilliant insights; I don't know if they were Tolkien's or simply common knowledge among Oxford literature dons, but I loved reading about the power of adjectives, and the concept of the sub-creator, and the idea that a fantasy world does not require a suspension of disbelief, but rather an acceptance of an internal continuity that allows a sub-creation of a new world within the pages, a world that, if well done by the author and well-read by the audience, requires no suspension of disbelief but merely a shift in sensory input, from direct input to that which is imagined from the words. Great idea that I'm not doing justice to, but intend to revisit and clarify further in my own mind, and use to my advantage. It certainly reaffirmed my belief that Tolkien was the leading light of the fantasy genre, both because of his immense gifts as a writer, and because he understood fantasy, its advantages and disadvantages, its requirements and its place in literature and our lives.

And as a final piece of proof, the second piece in the book is a fairy-story that Tolkien wrote, called "Leaf by Niggle," which was simply lovely from start to finish. Twenty pages, and it encapsulated the sense of being a frustrated artist in the real world, and the advantages of living, therefore, in an invented world -- advantages that are not just for the artists, but also for their neighbors -- in addition to having a nice moral on the power of art to lead us home. Once again, Tolkien takes his place in the big chair.

A Treasure
By Sherry Thompson
I regret that this isn't currently in print, and it baffles me that this is so when Christopher and the estate seem to be printing everything else they can lay their hands on. (Not to say that's a bad thing!)

Tolkien's essay reveals the value or role of fairy stories for those who may be fantasy-challenged. Children already know that there are dragons. Fairy tales don't scare children by telling them this terrible secret. The role of the fairy tale is to reveal that dragons can be killed. The dragon is the catastrophe. The slaying of the dragon is the eucatastrophe.

Tolkien also notes that we are all subcreators, that it is a natural role for us. (I think he was writing about other authors but anyone who daydreams a story is creating as well.)

The best part of this book is "Leaf by Niggle." Tolkien wrote several short stories and I love them all, but this is a very special short story. In my opinion, Tolkien was writing about himself during a particularly clear moment of spiritual discernment.

I don't want to give away the plot but suffice it to say that the main character, Niggle, is working on a huge painting of an immense tree, filled with detail that grows in detail the more he paints. He would love to finish the painting but he has a neighbor who interrupts him repeatedly with some very real if down-to-earth needs.

And that's just the premise. The story just gets better and better, and I hope that it is all true. "True", not "real".

Please buy a used copy while you can, and treasure it.

This is a beautiful book. Reading through it, the intentions of Tolkien are revealed. It makes all of the stories of middle earth more real, tangable, comforting. It can be read and reread; each time more layers, more connections are made. Tolkien confronts reality of fantasy in this essay and poem. He justifies our human need for subcreation, and comfort in art.

I am the Author and would like to respond
By Gilly Sergiev
It's very easy to judge others without seeing the whole picture, but as Witches I believe our aim is to promote positivity, fun and happiness - to show that Wicca is a healing, white magic and empowering. If as Witches we keep the secrets close and give off negative and judgemental vibes - all we are doing is promoting the mis-representation that has been around since medieval times. We want to rid ourselves of that "dark image" and bring forward the Light into everyone's lives. Of course there is more to Wicca than in this book - but I'm not writing a detailed history - take this book for what it is - a charming and informative beginners guide - all I'm attempting to do is start people off on the Path in a positive and loving way. This book (which was totally endorsed by the Goddess) is to "kick start" those who wish to learn - after that, as every Witch knows, it's a journey of discovery unique to every one of us. When you give out negativity it just returns to you so I am proud of this fun and happy little book and I know it has the blessings of the spirit world - and will touch people. Also, for the many people who loved it in the UK - there are 2 more books on their way so watch this space! Judge for yourself how lovely this book is and heal your life! Loving power to you all. Engagingly Fun
By Merlin
Interesting but like the first learned reviewer from Wilminton mentioned...wicca is more than just 5 simple steps. The author came out to defend her work, but I felt it was unnecessary simply because, "to each his/her own". What may appeal to some may not others. The strength lies in the humour of her book. Initially, I found the section on attire of a witch to be more for Halloween wannabes, but felt that the book contains some relevant and empowering message for the uninitiated. Also, some of the spells are quite interesting.
Overall, the book is a good read on a weekend and should be tempting enough to start one on a course of magic and wonder-just skip the witch makeup..:).

Cute, some good stuff..dont take title litterly
By Karla
This is actually a pretty good little book with lots of "basic" information. However, it will NOT make you a "witch", but it will give you easy to understand information and some very simple spells.
The title is deceiving IMO for the simple fact that it is not EASY to become a Witch in 5 simple steps, nor is it possible. But it's a catchy title and I am sure that is why it was written so. Just make sure you buy at least ONE book that will teach you more about Wicca and do not live by this book alone. There are so many out there, ask around and see what people who have been in the craft for a long time recommend.
Blessings...

From Publishers Weekly
Barnard, the surgeon who performed the world's first heart transplant, offers realistic common-sense advice. He recommends the old stalwarts regular exercise, eating a Mediterranean-style diet, not smoking and so on, but adds his own ideas as well. These not-so-obvious (and really quite fun) ideas include: enjoying regular sex, taking a three-week vacation every year, and getting a grip on one's emotional life. A German who resides in South Africa, Barnard also believes in herbs and mineral supplements as heart health boosters, supplements Americans have been slower to recognize. But while many of Barnard's tips may be helpful for everyone, the book is aimed primarily at men even though heart disease is a mjor killer of American women. For example, there's an entire chapter about male potency issues entitled, "Take Viagra." Female sexual issues are addressed only peripherally. Likewise, there's a chapter on the benefits of drinking two glasses of red wine each day never mentioning recent findings linking alcohol with an increase in breast cancer in women. While it's certainly not Barnard's fault that most medical studies are performed with men as subjects, he does owe his female readers information as well. Still, his tips are direct and positive, and are generally easy enough to integrate into one's life.

From Library Journal
Barnard, the pioneering South African surgeon who performed the world's first heart transplant in 1967, argues that the prevention of heart attacks is simple through the management of nutrition, stress, environment, activities, and emotions. His assertion that diets can't work and dismissal of the Body Mass Index (BMI) as a method of estimating obesity will raise dietitians' hackles. Rather than preaching moderate consumption, Barnard advises leaving the table while one is still hungry. However, his recommendations to keep technology from adding to one's stress levels are good. Still, most of his advice can be found in other books; and some of it, such as the suggestion to take a nap in the middle of one's workday or to quit a job one hates, can be completely impractical. In addition, some word usage, such as mobile phone instead of cell phone, may be unfamiliar to American readers. Thomas Yannios's The Heart Disease Breakthrough (LJ 4/15/99) or The Mayo Clinic Heart Book (LJ 4/1/00. 2d ed.) are far better choices. For larger collections only. Janet M. Schneider, James A. From Booklist
The South African surgeon who performed the first heart transplant proves an exceptionally winning health advisor. That's good, because this book of 50 injunctively titled chapters--"Eat Vitamins," "Enjoy Sex," "Don't Hide Grief," and so forth--looks rather like the same-old same-old on heart care, complete with tips, checklists, steps for doing this or that, provocative pull-quotes, and the rest of the drill. But Barnard's authoritative-but-not-impersonal, serious-but-not-solemn, conversational manner makes learning from him a pleasure. Sensible rather than zealous, he advises, for instance, eating less, not going on a diet, as the first step in losing weight. He fosters individual creativity by, for instance, counseling readers to "create your own stress." And he isn't afraid of provoking belly laughs: one of his tips for eliminating passive cigarette smoke is "Smoke cigars. Strangely, cigarette smokers don't much like cigar smoke." Perhaps his Briticisms ("sport" instead of "sports") and occasional loose grammar will pique pedants, but he justifies Thorsons' confident 75,000-copy first printing. Once they read the book, readers will want to keep it. Ray Olson

Great read, despite few unsubstantiated personal advices
By Mohamed F. El-Hewie
The publication date of this book on September 1, 2001 preceded the author's death with only one day, at the age of 79. The author's age is relevant to the tone of the book, which involved too much emphasis on the value of wine, sex, stress, and walking, which occupy the center of mind of old people. In many instances in the book, the author addresses readers of age 60 and older. Most of the author's advices are very personal and reflect the nature of well disciplined and educated person, despite few imperfections. Some of the chapters' titles reflect the odd nature of an aloof professional, such as "Learn Greek", "Create your own stress", "Take Viagra", "Sleep at the office", "Bare your teeth", "Don't give in to your mobile", and "Phone your way to fitness".

The 50 ways for healthy heart are equally split into five segments on nutrition, stress, environment, activity, and attitude. In the "Introduction", this renowned heart surgeon reveals his humble way of dignified living. He lives on a monthly $700 pension; never accepted money from those he tended medical attention, and turned down offers to make millions of dollars.

The 10 chapters on NUTRITION address these issues:

1- A prophecy that obesity will be the epidemic of the 21st century. He contends that diets make people fat, sick, and depressed and a simple mechanism is to burn fat and build muscles. He sets 22% body fat as an upper limit for women and 17% for men.
2- Eating the right fat (such as monounsaturated ones in the olive oil, rapeseed oil, hemp oil, peanut, and avocado) is the true winner in reducing bad cholesterol. Yet, he stress on the need for moderation even with god fats.
3- "Drink Red Wine" is one of his poor advices, since he admits that grape and elderly berry juices are almost as good as red wine and that wine could be your enemy if taken in excess. In addition, his advocacy for red wine neglects the negative impact on reducing activity.
4- Proper chewing, walking with groceries for exercise, concentration during eating, eating with passion, relaxing while eating, and shopping frequently in order to maintain fresh vegetables with untainted vitamin content.
5- Eating vitamins for combating the free radicals that cause cancer, disease, and aging.
6- Using Crete Island, Greek, as a role model for cutting heart attacks by consuming more vegetables, fruits, and red wine and less meat (32% less tham northern Europe) and sausage (54% less). (The author died in Cyprus, across from Greece in the Mediterranean).
7- Eating the most important minerals (potassium, magnesium, and selenium) that greatly impact the heart function.
8- Criticizing Cholesterol testing before the age of 35 for men, 45 for women, and over 75, as unnecessary.
9- Emphasizing the need for natural living with moderation on eating saturated fats, drinking wine, and using chocolate as an example for its very high content of poly-phenols compared to tomato

The 10 chapters on STRESS address the following issues:

1- Recognizes the need for stress as a motivation and sorts out the things that are unworthy for stressing.
2- The mobile phone techno-stress and the traps of TV, Internet, and Information.
3- Viagra for men, apomorphine for women, modern sexual impotence, and the role of enjoyment of sex in protecting the heart.
4- The role of music in taking our fear away, enhancing problem solving, balm for the soul, and relief for the heart.
5- Midday 30-minute nap in the office as relaxing as two hours of night sleep.
6- Quality time off of 3 weeks for action, swimming, or hiking.
7- Sleep well to combat weakness, sickness, and impotence, but too much sleep also causes heart disease.
8- Cooling down during conflicts and learning to fly and let off steam.
9- Relaxed thinking by walking or looking out for a window.
10- Stopping smoking by six different methods, from cold-turkey abstinence to using Zyban, new medicine to block brain receptors for longing for cigarettes.

The 10 chapters on ENVIRONMENT address the following issues:

1- Avoidance of noise and passive smoking.
2- Caring for workplace safety and cleanliness.
3- Marriage and relationships as the most important business in the world.
4- Quitting a stinking job before sickening your heart.
5- The role of sun and fresh are on health
6- The role of pets on our happiness and diligence.

The 10 chapters on ACTIVITY address the following issues:

1- Starting now in sport will lower risk of heart attack by 72%. This is a contradiction of the author's claim that Red Wine drinking reduces heart disease by 60%. If exercise can do 72%, while red wine only 60% in addition to its detrimental effect of exercising ability, then exercise is the way to go.
2- Getting into sport at any age is a winning lifestyle and great role model.
3- Fitness exercising while on the phone is the best part of the book. It raises you awareness to the possibility of gaining a lot from every minute of your life if you know how to benefit from exercise even while talking on the phone.
4- Blood donation as a way of removing ferrite from the body and protecting the heart from the free radicals, while saving the lives of others.
5- Walking 2 miles per day cuts hear attacks by 50% and that exercise lowers your resting heart rate from 70 to 50 per minute thus saving you 13 million heartbeats per year.
6- The importance of patience and planning long-term exercise plan.

The 10 chapters on ATTITUDE address the following issues:

1- Admitting to weakness as a sign of strength in reasoning.
2- Laughing loud as a healing process.
3- Releasing grief is safer than hiding it.
4- Managing anger relieves the immune system and prevents cancer and heart disease.
5- Honesty saves the heart the trouble of stressful concerns of lying.
6- Friends and social living defeat illness.
7- Programming the mind by deleting, relaxing, loading, and believing enhances healthy living.

Practical and straight-forward
By Christo
Okay. Barnard is NOT a German living is South Africa as the Amazon review by "Publishers Weekly" wrongly states. Chris Barnard was born and bred in South Africa and lived there most of his life - though he did spend some years overseas. Barnard died earlier this year (2001), apparantly from an asthma attack.
I have just finished this book. Not completely what I expected, but quite useful nevertheless. I expected a sermon on diet and cholestrol, but the book is in fact much more. It covers a range of lifestyle strategies, such as avoiding diets, eating the right fats, drinking red wine, laughing and having fun, socialising, avoiding stress, activity and exercise, and enjoying sex.
The book is easy to read, and medical jargon is hard to come by. It is practical and straight-forward. I guess a lot of the advice is common sense, but sometimes one needs to have these points reinforced. Barnard reckons that he could have saved more people by educating them about lifestyle than by doing heart transplants. A point well worth considering.

The Best Advice on Health I've Read...
By J. Ziegler
Bernard certainly can cash in on his success as a cardiac surgeon. He can also help us all step back and take a look at our diet and lifestyle. This book has been the best I have read so far on over all health/heart health. Any book on "diets" make fantastic claims...Christiaan Bernard cools the jets on these approaches, tells people not to go on diets, but to simply eat less. He also tells us to enjoy life and all it has to offer, including food. "A burger won't kill you..." and "There are no such things as a bad food, just too much of certain foods..." (paraphrases)is a new look at food in today's panic stricken approach to eating. I believe he also quipped (paraphrase)- "People do more to harm their health when the worry about what they eat than if they just eat..."

He adds exercise, good stress, and no smoking to the list to heart improvement.

This is an excellent book, well written and in alanguage anyone can unserstand. It addresses many of us who have punished ourselves over the years, dieting for fat loss or heart health, and let's us know just to relax, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and well balanced diet.

THE LONG MARCH., by Sun Shuyun

Every nation has its founding myth, and for modern China it is the Long March. In 1934, the fledgling Communist Party and its 200,000 strong armies were forced out of their bases by Chiang Kaishek and his National troops. Walking more than 10,000 miles over mountains, grassland and swamps, they suffered appalling casualties and ended up in the remote barren North. Just one-fifth survived; they went on to launch the new China in the heat of revolution. A legend was born. Justified by a remarkable feat, the Long March was also a triumph of propaganda, for Mao and for the revolution. Seventy years later Sun Shuyun set out to retrace the Marchers' steps. The rugged landscape has changed little. Her greatest difficult was in wrestling with the scenes lodged in her mind since childhood, part of the upbringing of every Chinese. On each stage of her journey, she found hidden stories: the ruthless purges, the terrible toll of hunger and disease, the fate of women on the March, the huge number of desertions, the futile deaths. The real story of the March, the most vivid pictures, come from the veterans whom Sun Shuyun has found. She follows their trail through all those harsh miles, discovers their faith and disillusion, their pain and their hopes, and also recounts how many suffered even after the March's end in 1936. 'The Long March' was an epic journey of endurance, even more severe than history books say, and courage against impossible odds. It is a brave, exciting and tragic story. Sun Shuyun tells it for the first time, as it really happened.

Picking through the dustbin of history
By Victor C. Shih
The Long March by Sun Shuyun is simply the most moving book on China that I have ever read, and I have read a great many of them. She sets out to collect the memories of the last survivors of the Long March, and along the way, she exploded or cast serious doubts on a great many myths that have been created around the Long March. While this task sounds dry, the way she accomplishes it is simply unlike anything on China I have ever read. She begins every chapter with a narrative directly from one of the survivors in first person. She then moves to more narratives or the fruits of her extensive archival research or passages from official history. Immediately, the reader is moved by the first person narratives, which are often gut-wrenching. Then the mind is hit with her often incisive analysis and skepticism. One's heart and mind are both deeply challenged throughout the book.

I don't want to spoil it for the readers, but there are some real highlights in the book, including the chapter on the mass defections in the early stages of the March, the so-called Battle of the Luding Bridge, and the fate of the Fourth Army in the Western March (Western Legion). While some of these themes have been explored by Western scholars, her interviews and discussion about those left in the dust-bins of history were simply unparalleled and more haunting than anything I have every read. We read about a young boy from Hunan who was left among the Tibetans in Western Sichuan, the "crazy woman" who stands on the road waiting for her Red Army husband who never returned from the March, as well as those in the women's brigade who were deserted by their party and left to fend for themselves in the middle of hostile Muslim territory. These were the rough edges around the polish sheen of the official history that were shaved off decades ago. Sun has done a great service, to historians and to these people, by bringing their stories to light.

Sun Shuyun, being a product of the Long March heritage, is surprisingly even-handed in her treatment of history. She does not pander to official history, nor does she go over board in denying everything we say about the Long March. Clearly, the manipulation of the Long March myth was a stupendous feat of propaganda by Mao, and she acknowledges it as such. Clearly, many Long Marchers, especially those who stayed on after the first part, were sincere believers of some notion of communist justice, even if that ideology was a vague concept to most of them. Clearly, the purges of the 30s produced a highly disciplined core in the Red Army which went on to numerous suicide missions when called on to do so. I would add that this core of "true believers" was a key to the CCP's later success, although luck, the support of Zhang Xueliang, and the Xi'an Incident also had something to do with it.

Throughout the book, Sun conveys a sense that after the Red Army passed through Guizhou, Mao increasingly asserted control over the party. Toward the end of the book, we see a Mao beginning to play the part of a sadistic director who manipulated his actors every which way toward one goal: power for Mao himself. This picture fits very nicely with an emerging body of work (for example by Mao's Last Revolution and Mao: The Unknown Story) portraying Mao as a ruthless political, yes, genius who pulled every trick in the book to obtain and retain power. Regardless of the debate surrounding Mao, I think the power-hungry core of Mao is quite beyond dispute. We can debate whether the CCP could have emerged victorious in the bitter struggle against the KMT and (less so) the Japanese without such a power-hungry and devious man at its head. I tend to think the CCP would have failed with a "lesser" helmsman.

The book opens many doors for us "professional" scholars to explore. I believe some of my colleagues are indeed busy constructing alternative histories of the Chinese revolution. Sun's book shows us even more promising avenues of research, especially with oral history (though one must hurry!) and provincial archival research. I thought about doing a review for this book in a journal, but I simply couldn't wait. This book is an important one, and it will surely find itself into my syllabus this year. Victor Shih, Department of Political Science, Northwestern University

Revealing and Deeply Moving
By Tom Shi
The phrase Long March conjure up a variety of stock images colored by the massive amount of propaganda that have obscured it ever since its occurrence. In The Long March: The True History of Communist China's Founding Myth, the author uncovers the human story behind the propaganda, and find it so much more haunting and heartbreaking than any air-brushed propaganda can conceive.

Though the structure of the book is framed by the macro view of the movement of armies and history-making moments of political machinations, the substance and the strength of the book come from the individual interviews conducted by the author with the surviving veterans of the Long March, both men and women, now old and gray, living quiet, often poverty-stricken lives in remote parts of country. They had joined the Red Army as teenagers, naive, idealistic and hoping for food and freedom. What they received was the incredible deprivations and sufferings, death of friends, constant threat of hunger and enemy attack, captivity, torture, and finally, the abandonment by the very Party to which they had pledged their youth and life. All they had to cope with these tribulations were the strength of their convictions and the hardiness of spirit.

It is particularly touching to see how brightly those distant and often painful memories burn in the mind of these men and women in the twilight of their lives. One senses that the Long March was the defining story of their lives. It is told very well here.

Mao's Myth
By Christian Schlect
An oral history approach, from the vantage point of the lower ranks of the Red Army, to describing the famous Long March that preceded Mao's political take over of mainland China. A good book for those interested in the pre-World War II history of the Middle Kingdom.

The author approaches her subject with an open mind, in spite of having grown up with only the high propaganda side of this epic tale. She finds brave, but very aged, Red army survivors who had fought through extreme difficulties (hostile weather, terrain, and enemy troops) for a cause they believed in, but under leadership that was extraordinarily uncaring of human life.

It is heartening that the PRC has changed enough over the last few decades for it now to apparently tolerate an open and honest historical inquiry by a citizen of a major political event pertaining to its founding, such as here by Sun Shuyun.

Don't Tell Mummy: A True Story of the Ultimate Betrayal, by Toni Maguire

This heart-wrenching memoir from Toni Maguire tells the deeply moving story of an idyllic childhood that masked a terrible truth. Underneath her mother's gentility and her father's roguish charm lay horrifying secrets, which eventually led to their only child's near destruction.

The first time her father made an improper advance on Toni, she was six years old. Her father warned her not to tell her mother, or anyone else, because they would blame her and wouldn't love her any more. It had to remain ‘our secret.’

When she finally built up the courage to tell her mother what had happened, she was told never to speak of the matter again. With no one to turn to, isolated and alone in rural Ireland, the abuse continued unhindered.

At fourteen Toni fell pregnant by her father, and when her state was discovered she was made to have a late abortion which almost killed her. The truth of her childhood could no longer be kept hidden but, just as her father predicted, Toni found herself judged and rejected by her family, teachers and friends. The blame and anger she was treated with only worsened when her father was sent to prison as a result of his actions. This is the compelling story of her struggle to put the ghost of her childhood to rest, and emerge ultimately triumphant.

Heartbreaking
By ELI (Italy)
An emotional, heartbreaking journey through Antoniette's childhood, molested and raped by her very own father. A string of crimes perpetrated repeatedly for several years under her very own mother's nose, who deliberately chose not to see, adding to the psychological side of the torture. The bottom line is, how could it all be? Unfortunately, it just was.

Strictly speaking about the narrative, I believe that the sense of helplessness and hopelessness conveyed by the voice of the child Antoniette, combined with her solitude, innermost feelings, fears and desperation are very well depicted. I can only hope that Ms. Maguire found it therapeutic to write down her memories. One would hope that by reading her book the awareness of the general public becomes higher and that victims and abusers of similar crimes find the courage to face and speak about it, and get the necessary help.

Horrible yet brilliant
By Shanel J.
I started reading this book on an out of town trip. It literally made me sick to my stomach. It was horrible reading how a child of 7 was brutalized by the people that were supposed to protect her from the monsters. What made it even worse was that when she finally did open up and tell about the abuse, she was outlawed by her family, her teachers, and her friends. It broke my heart to see how cruel someone could be treated. What made this book brilliant is that she not only survived it, she got thru it. I would definitely recommend this book, although it's not for the faint of heart.

Well Written, Brutally Honest
By T. L. Johnson
This book is well written and brutally honest. While it's difficult to read, how much more difficult was it to have lived through it? Hard to put down, and even harder to forget.

Exceptional story telling of 7 great wonders by one of the best historians around
By A. Woodley
If you haven't discovered Deborah Cadbury yet then she is one of the best and sharpest writers around. Her text is spare, her research impeccable, and her ability to draw out threads without resorting to tabloid sensationalism makes for satisfying reading. In this, her third book, Cadbury covers the seven wonders of the industrial world, putting the feats, their makers, and the events into context of the time and what they have meant in history.

This is the GREAT industrial revolution. The 7 wonders are The Great Eastern (the largest boat of its time a double hulled steel boat by Brunel), The Bell Rock Lighthouse, the Brooklyn Bridge, The London Sewers, The Transcontinental Railroad, The Panama Canal and the Hoover Dam.

What I love about Cadbury is that she has not only picked 7 extremely diverse items, (dams, lighthouses, sewers, railroads, bridges, canals, and boats) but she manages to put them into the context of the history of that particular engineering feat, but also in context to the events of their own time.

Her research takes her right into the buidling as well - for instance with the building of the Great Eastern she talks about the need for large numbers of young boys who were employed inside the boat, working in appalling hot and cramped conditions and juggling white hot rivets. There were dreadful accidents but a steady supply of labour meant that new workers were never a problem. The sheer volume of workers however never even made it into the day book though, they were never considered important enough.

She relates this sheer volume of workers back to all these structures. They were all built through the enormous supply of labour available.

This does not denigrate the sheer feats of engineering which these men needed to create these structures. No one thought the Great Eastern would be able to sail. The London Sewers were built in competition with the Underground in London, The Transcontinental Railroad needed to have all the items shipped around by sea via the Cape to get to the WEstern Side of America. As an aside I would really recommend reading Laura INgalls Wilder's book on the Banks of Silver Lake, if you are interested in the Transcontinental as Wilder's father worked for a time on the Railroad and she describes the working day in excellent detail including how they 'flattened' out the prairies by hand.

I cannot emphasise enough how great the detail is in the book - for instance, the work on the Brooklyn Bridge laying the foundations lays bare the horrendous circumstances in which men worked, in 80 degree heat at the bottom of the river. Explosions at the edge of the caissons often resulted in blow outs of compressed air which would send a 'fury of debris and water" in a column as much as 500 feet in the air.

I saw the television series on this book but was very disappointed. It was reenactments and it just didn't bring the depth of detail which is in this book.

This is one of the best reads this year. I would strongly recommend it to anyone. Deborah Cadbury's books are excellent and she is on my must buy list.

Good Story Telling
By Rodney J. Szasz
I bought this book because I thought the format and subject nature were most suitable for a long plane ride back to Japan: Seven Chapters on the engineering marvels of the modern world. Each different with its own challenges and particular history. The changing subject nature would keep me interested during the flight -- I was not dissapointed.

The storytelling here is first rate with a good introduction to the historical challenges and necessity of each project -- setting the story in its place as it were. Cadbury then spins anecdotes choosing what she wants and no doubt leaving out a lot of interesting and germane stuff... but it doesn't matter... the purpose of the book is to outline these great projects and, if one wants to, point one in the direction for more material related to such things as Brunel's "Great Eastern" or the Brooklyn Bridge, Hoover Dam or the Panama Canal.

The book has no pretensions to be a serious exposition of any of the projects. It is a good historical tale of each one of them with enough drama and description of the engineering difficulties and personalities to keep one's interest.

Serious Engineers may be expecting more... if so, you will need to look elsewhere. There are no sheer force equations, analysis of holding strength or geographic analysis of strata. But if there were I probably would not have bought this book.

It also fills a vital role in filling in some of our knowledge in these little known challenges that shaped our world so much... I hope I make as wise a choice of books for the next flight.

I Dream of Books Like This!
By Bruce Hilpert
Since I retired four years ago I have had the time to read a LOT of books, at least a lot for me.

One of my favorite books this summer was something a little out of my usual realm - the history of technology. Deborah Cadbury, in Dreams of Iron and Steel, provides a brief, readable and captivating synopsis of the construction of what she terms the "seven wonders of the modern age."

Having seen, during my lifetime, the first space flight, the first moon walk, the development of a jet that can cross the Atlantic in four hours and the invention of the wonders of the internet, I can sometimes get jaded when viewing the technical accomplishments of the nineteenth century. However, this book stimulates the awe that is appropriate when considering engineering projects such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Panama Canal, the Transcontinental (US) railroad, or the London sewer system.

Take, for example, the construction of the Bell Rock Lighthouse. Located eleven miles offshore of Scotland, Bell Rock is a reef that is exposed for only 2 hours at each low tide (twice a day for you landlubbers). In 1807, Robert Stevenson won the commission to build a 100-foot-tall lighthouse that could withstand the 60' waves that regularly lashed the outcrop and sent 70 ships to the bottom of the sea in a single storm in 1799. Many of the ships went down because their captains refused to head into a safe port because of the dangers presented by Bell Rock.

In four years, Stevenson completed the construction of the granite lighthouse without the benefit of power tools, dynamite or steam powered ships. Working during the summer season only at low tides, crews rowed to the island from a mother ship, put in their shift, and rowed away as the rising tide covered the reef. Hundreds of tons of intricately-shaped granite blocks were unloaded and hauled by mule across the outcrop and anchored into place. Against all odds, Stevenson discovered that his unfinished structure had withstood each winter's storms as he returned to the rock for the following season's construction.

Ms. Cadbury does an excellent job of building the personal drama of each of the construction projects. Her chapters are very personality-based and each of the seven chapters has a remarkable engineer or entrepreneur that brought a grand vision to life. She honed her storytelling skills as a BBC producer of documentaries, including a seven-part series on the industrial wonders of the world that led to this book.

But, Ms. Cadbury's ability to inject drama into each of these stories also belies the only weakness of the book. I found myself wanting considerably more technical information than was provided in these treatments. When an author covers both the French and American Panama Canal projects in 36 pages, we are obviously not going to get an in-depth treatment.

On balance, this book is an excellent introduction for someone like me who really had little previous knowledge or interest in topics such as the Hoover Dam or the Great Eastern steamship. It was an engaging read that I couldn't put down and the lack of in-depth information did not leave me too disappointed - I just moved on to the next exciting chapter! And, like any good non-fiction book, it whet my appetite for further research.

Dictionary
By Willie Maye Armstrong
This is one of the world's best dictionaries for young under educated adults that I have ever seen. The students in the correctional facility where I am employed as a learning consultant love working with it. The CD allows those students who enjoy working on the computer to test their knowledge by engaging in the activities. Love the product so much that my employer is placing an order for a number of the dictionaries for use by the students.
