Best book of its genre anywhere on earth.
By Glenn R.
This book is really interesting. It's a full encyclopedia with decent amounts of information on more than 1,000 entries of cryptozoological creatures. Most books I've read, typically focus primarily on the Loch Ness Monster and the damn Sasquatch and that's about it. However, this book contains viable information for each of its entries. The ones that have more history behind them will have more information than some others, which offer only a short paragraph about it, but it will at least give you an "awareness" of some of the rarer creatures. So if you want more information on those, using the internet sometimes comes in handy. But you'll most likely not find much more information on them anyways as modern man does not know as much about them as the ancients did. This is by far the LARGEST and most comprehensive collection of mythical animals and creatures I have ever seen. It's THICK, too. with 643 pages of creatures, plus a bibliography and index. The print is large as well, plus there are big margins to write in notes if you like, with extra information you may have found about the beasts elsewhere (This is what I do). I only wished that it was illustrated. It does have a few drawings in there, but they are very random and not specified towards any certain creature, nor are they labled. I believe that a pronunciation guide for the names of the creatures would have been a nice feature as well as I struggle to pronounce the names as they are written, but overall, John and Caillin Matthews did a terrific job on compiling and writing this fantastic book, which has no equal or rival in my search for books like this. If I could rate it higher than 5 stars, I would. Pliny the Elder and Younger would both be very impressed with this excellent book.

Some Interesting Information--But Has Research Gaps and Innacuracies
By Janet Boyer
"This book is a zoology of the imagination more than it is a natural history. It follows the myths of magical creatures wherever they show themselves, myths that are primal stories encoding understandings that we grasp by means of metaphor rather than with any literal-mindedness. Where will these creatures lead us?"

The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures is a 682-page, flexibound compendium of fantastic beings from myth, magic, and urban legend. (Flexibound is somewhat between a hardcover and a paperback). Arranged alphabetically for easy reference, hundreds of entries are culled from literature, sacred texts, history, legends, cryptozoology, and movies. Mythical stories pertaining to animals, fowl, and insects are also provided. Entertaining and informative, this book sparks both imagination and curiosity. Indeed, it's hard to read "just one" entry in this unique book.

Some of the fantastical beasts, monsters, and demigods listed in this book include:

* Bunyip

* Lorelei

* Puck

* Sasquatch

* Chupacabras

* Thoth

* Quetzalcoatl

* Elves

* Bastet

* Leviathan

* Dryads

* Lilith

* Ouroboros

* Mothman

* Fire Drake

* Golem

* Banshee

* Satyr

* Basilisk

* Thunderbird

* Scapegoat

While many entries are familiar, I found the majority obscure--having never heard of them. I was intrigued to find that Dobby, the house elf from the Harry Potter books, is actually a genus of British house fairies--known mostly in the north of England. Supposedly, the Dobby/Dobie makes ridiculous mistakes or is easily confused. When I read the entry for the Brownie (pronounced "broony"), I was surprised to read that the sure way to get rid of a brownie is to give him a piece of clothing--just like the house elves in the J.K. Rowling series. (Unfortunately, the authors didn't cross-reference Dobby to Brownie for some reason, so I stumbled upon the entry quite by accident. Or, due to obscene curiosity, I suppose).

At times, the authors speak at length about Potter references in relevant entries. However, the entry for the Stag fails to mention Harry Potter's Patronus, which is a luminous white stag that Harry conjures in his times of need.

Some of the research seems sketchy at best and inaccurate at worst. For example, under the Mothman entry, there's a mention of the movie The Mothman Prophecies. The entry states "starring Kevin Costner", but Costner isn't in the film. The star of the movie is actually Richard Gere. I have to wonder: if the authors include a mistake like this--on a fact that is easily researchable--how accurate is the other information in this book?

One of the first entries I looked up was "tulpas", a concept that fascinates me. Unfortunately, there is no mention or entry for this phenomenon. Yet, there was information on the Golem, which is similar--but of Jewish/Kabbalistic origin.

While the authors explained that Fawkes is a pet Phoenix of Dumbledore in the Potter series, they fail to mention a more common mythological connection: the Phoenix is connected to the sign of Scorpio, and is considered a higher expression of this Zodiacal sign. Another "miss" was the entry on Salamanders. There is no mention that this creature is a spirit connected with the fire element in magical Hermeticism and some Pagan traditions. (Not to mention that the Salamander is a somewhat common theme among the fire suits in Tarot, most notably the Wands.) So I looked up Gnome (associated with the earth element), and *did* find a brief mention of salamander, gnome, undine, and sylph in terms of hermetic practice and Paracelsusian philosophy. Thus, the cross references in this book seems to be shoddy.

While some of the information in The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures is downright fascinating, I was a bit disappointed to see what I considered glaring gaps in the research, not to mention inaccuracies. I didn't go looking for these, but discovered them early in my explorations of this book as I followed my interests and curiosity. That, and the fact that many of the entries were entirely unfamiliar to me, makes this a so-so book for me.

Granted, it's an overwhelming undertaking cataloguing hundreds of fantastical creatures from a myriad of sources--so kudos certainly go to the authors for doing a decent job as far as breadth goes. Moreover, I suppose I can't be *too* hard on the book, considering that it's an encyclopedia--not necessarily and exhaustive reference. Perhaps I am spoiled by Judika Illes' breadth *and* depth in The Element Encyclopedia of Witchcraft (not to mention her book on 5,000 spells).

If you're curious about the likes of mermen and griffins, sirens and orcs, The Element Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures will probably delight you. I can see this book being especially good reference for sci-fi and fantasy writers. However, if you want comprehensive information on several creatures, you may be better off getting a book that is devoted specifically to such a subject. (Note: after only an hour or so of reading this book, the pages began to pull away from the glue binding. Unfortunately, the flexibound cover/binding isn't as sturdy as the two previous hardback installments of the Element Encyclopedia series. Thus, it's not a good idea to read the book flat--but this hefty volume makes it almost impossible to read any other way without experiencing discomfort.)

Worth Every Penny!
By Gypsy November
I give this vibrant and fascinating tome five stars simply because I can't give it more. I was hesitant to buy it because of the relatively low rating on Amazon...but I am so glad now that I went with my instincts. I can't understand how it came by such a poor rating, but I assure you that this book doesn't deserve anything less then a five. I am a fantasy writer and this is an invaluable resource, besides that, I love fantasy and the imagination in their own right...and this book gives wonderful homage to the magical beings all around us.

Have you ever heard of a Haikur (a water horse)? How about the Dev (a race of giants with seven heads)? Did you know that the Valkyrie are female spirits that carry away the souls of those killed in battle? This is just the tiniest taste of all you will read about in this wonderful Encyclopedia. Not only does this book cover the obscure, but it details well-known creatures, such as Centaurs, Vampires, Elves, and Werewolves. It even explains how animals we know well are magical in their own right (ants are believed holy in many cultures, such as China, where it is considered righteous and prized for its orderliness and patriotism).

I really am fascinated by this tome, and thoroughly believe it belongs on the shelf of anyone who is interested in the things we have to believe in to see.

I will say that this book does not have many illustrations (and the ones it does have are really just sketches). I did not take away in the rating for that because, first of all, the description of the book never said anything about pictures and secondly because most of these creatures, I think, are best seen by the minds eye...where they will never disappoint because they will look exactly as you think they should. Also, I wouldn't recommend this book for children...it's written for teens and adults.

If you get this book with the understanding that everyone has their own set of beliefs, that it is (literally) impossible to set all those beliefs down on paper (this is not an exhaustive work because of the nature of the subject, not because of author fault), and that this book is just a wonderful starting ground for the imagination and it is up to you to take it as far as you want, you will love this tome.

Classic, Hilarious Matt Groening
By NYCbooster
Years ago on a bitterly cold night, I stood in a long, long, line of Matt Groening fans in the West Village so that he could autograph this book. It’s my favorite Groening creation—even more than The Simpsons. The queue of his admirers inched ahead slowly that night, and some people bailed out when it was certain that the wait would be at least four hours. The reason for the long wait, however, was that Groening drew a cartoon for every fan who showed up.

He asked what I did for a living, and then penned a fantastic, detailed cartoon of another hapless career secretary: long-eared rabbit Blinky behind a desk, eyes glued to the clock.

That cartoon is one of my most cherished possessions, as is the book he inscribed. I’ve given away many copies of Work is Hell over the years (it first appeared in 1986) as gifts to co-workers who were fortunate and ambitious enough to move on to better things.

Got me through my first "real" job
By Ark-ing
After I graduated college and 6 months of intense job interviewing and searching, I finally found a job in a field I wanted. What I didn't expect though was having to do it all day every day. Stuck in a room full of cubicles full of crazy people and scrutinizing crazy bosses doing the same thing over and over began to wear on me. I thought I was alone in thinking this was not normal. Everyone else seemed oblivious to this but me. I'd seen "Life In Hell" in an underground newspaper and picked this book up on a whim.

I suddenly discovered I wasn't alone in my thinking. I made one mistake, though - I showed it to another co-worker. They didn't understand it and gave me weird looks ever afterwards. They probably still work there in the same room then go home at night and cry and then scream like a banshee into a pillow.

Warm portrait of talented, tortured and eccentric soccer manager
By David Ljunggren
Sports journalist Duncan Hamilton had the great fortune to start forging a close relationship with soccer manager Brian Clough in 1977, shortly after he took over a struggling Nottingham Forest side. Clough, by turns an overbearing, opinionated, insecure, bullying, outrageous, generous and immensely gifted motivator of players, had already led unfashionable Derby County side to the First Division championship before stumbling badly and derailing his career. Forest, then languishing in the Second Division, were the only team willing to take a chance. Clough, relying on players discarded by other teams and cheap bargains, led Forest to promotion and then won the First Division championship the next year. The team then won the European Cup (the continent's most important trophy, contested in those days by national champions only) two years in a row, which was completely unheard of, especially for a minor team. Hamilton describes Clough's character well and shows how he gradually got to know a very complex and eccentric man. Frustratingly, there isn't actually enough soccer in the book, which is more a psychological portrait than a detailed account of what the team did. Forest didn't have the financial clout to cope in the ever more mercenary world of English soccer and Clough couldn't repeat his successes. He split with his assistant at the club and started drinking more and more heavily, so the book becomes darker as the chapters progress. It's well worth reading, though.

Clough the man, not Clough the manager
By Lynette McClenaghan
Brian Clough is a perennially interesting subject and this book does add to our understanding of this complex man, although it also falls short in a number of ways.

Hamilton, although a sports journalist, attempts to present us with a complex psychological portrait of his subject. To this end he succeeds in providing a sympathetic and detailed portrayal of Clough’s strengths and weaknesses. He provides plenty of examples and anecdotes to illustrate his ideas and by the end of the book the reader feels that Clough’s complexity has been illuminated, warts and all. However, this is also something of a reductionist approach, so that Clough becomes a psychological study, rather than a brilliant football manager. The football is not given nearly enough emphasis, so that Clough’s extraordinary achievements are diminished. Hamilton shows little appreciation for the game. The drama of football at the highest levels is nothing more than the background against which Hamilton’s relationship with Clough is played out.

You will learn more about Clough the man from this book, but for those primarily interested in the football, you will likely find this a let-down.

"I've got you under my skin"
By Tom Plum
One could easily title this saying this is a highly acclaimed award winning sports book of the year on the legendary manager Brian Clough but that is to state the obvious.

My review title comes from indeed, the fact that Brian Clough was a big Frank Sinatra fan and others of that genre and song lyrics are quoted from time to time and while at the same time, BC like Bill Shankly came up with some highly remembered quotations in their own right.

I had to read the likewise, popular novel and now, movie too, The Damned Utd but not before this one, but after reading 'The Damned United', I got out "Provided you don't kiss me" and decided to read it a second time because yes, the subject matter "got under my skin" here, in fact, if desired, one could make quite a study of the man and read other books as well. I was not sure if the Brian Clough figure portrayed in the 'Damned Utd.' meshed with the Clough presented in the "provided you don't kiss me" book which is all from first-hand experience. The author of this book, Duncan Hamilton who spent 18 years with managing legend Brian Clough said he did not recognize the Clough in 'The Damned Utd.' but that Clough may have undergone a big change by the time he got to Nottingham (in leaving Leeds, Clough received very generous severence payments making him financially independent along with the wealth of experience managing Derby, Leeds for 44 days, Hartlepool and Brighton). Okay, good to know I have retained some reading comprehension.

This book is not so much a straight-forward biography of Brian Clough's life but rather vignettes of his life. I was even able to categorize the 11 chapters by the subject matter.

Chapter 1: Introduction of main two characters of the book, journalist Duncan Hamilton and Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough. It is up to the reader, but I read it as very much a friendship vs. a professional relationship.

Chapter 2: Introduction of Clough's left-hand man, perhaps better put, "Co-Manager" in actuality if not in title: Peter Taylor- former teammate/goalkeeper of Clough as well, he was a bit like a fatherly figure to him when Clough played soccer professionally. In all likelihood, Clough would not have been as successful without Taylor and possibly vice-versa. Clough and Taylor were a team though Clough received most of the publicity.

Chapter 3: Falling out with Taylor.

Chapter 4: Peter Shilton, reknown all-time great goalkeeper along with various stories of other players at Nottingham Forest.

Chapter 5: European Play of Clough's teams, Derby and Nottingham Forest, the latter winning back-to-back European Championships (Now Champions League).

Clough did so much with Derby and Nottingham Forest, yet, they are both teams from smaller cities, 'small teams' versus the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal or even Newcastle let alone the likes of the 'Galacticos' of Real Madrid and other big European teams.

The great Ajax, Johann Cruyff and total football triumphed during one of the years Derby ventured into the European competition, but thank goodness. Clough seemed to hold a grudge that year that one of the other teams was up to bribing referees and the like. Football/Soccer at times leaves something to be desired with those that bend the rules. Clough is to be highly admired if for nothing else, for his principled stands for sportsmanship and fair play, no hotdogging with goal celebrations or gamesmanship.

Chapter 6: When Clough interviewed and sought the job of manager for the National (3 Lions) England soccer team in the 1970s. I think he could have done a good job. I also think, again, Mr. Taylor would be needed too. Clough stirred up too many waves to get the job and the directors who would have hired him are probably what we would call "stuffed suits" and so Brian was not hired.

Chapter 7: psychological, personal management style of Clough.

Chapter 8: A Sinatra song quote is title of the chapter, "There may be trouble ahead", dealing with a downturn in Nottingham Forest's fortunes in the league as well as financial trials the Club endured. Really, he was a big Sinatra fan.

Chapter 9: Years of alcohol abuse start to take tow on Brian Clough.

Chapter 10: Retirement as manager of Forest.

Chapter 11: Post-management relationship/"friendship" with author Duncan Hamilton.

Epilogue

There are also some excellent additions to this book, the "p.s." features including an interview of Hamilton comparing his book to the Damned United, a timeline on Brian Clough, his record as player and coach and more.

This is a book about Clough, the real Clough. So often, Clough is remembered in some ways about his life, boiling it down to his famous quotes, "I wouldn't say I was the best manager, but I was in the top one" or Clough is remembered for his cantankerous personality or his green rugby shirt.

Hardcore Troubadour: The Life and Near Death of Steve Earle, by Lauren St John

If Steve Earle weren't a living, breathing person, he'd be a character in a blues song -- a raucous ballad about a gifted rebel who drank too much, lost most of his women in a blizzard of crack and cocaine addiction, and always came out on the wrong side of the law. Somewhere in the midst of all this, he also managed to weld rock to country, the Beatles to Springsteen, and bluegrass to punk, establishing himself among the most thoroughly original and politically astute musicians of his generation. Granted unrestricted access to Steve and his family and friends, Lauren St John has given us a sometimes shocking, often moving, and completely unvarnished biography of one of America's most talismanic sons.

From Publishers Weekly
This biography of country rocker Earle begins with him skipping a 1992 meeting with record execs to sign a potentially career-reviving, multimillion-dollar record contract. Instead, he sold his airplane ticket for $100 and went to score crack in the slums of Nashville, beginning what Earle calls his four-year "vacation in the ghetto." It's a brilliant opening hook, and St. John (Walkin' After Midnight) never lets the reader go, breezily guiding through Earle's wild childhood (he dropped out of school after the eighth grade and was living on his own by 16), his five tumultuous marriages, his many run-ins with the law, his restless wanderings through the American South and Mexico-and a quarter-century of addiction to booze, cocaine and heroin that finally ended after some jail time in the mid-1990s. By talking to many of Earle's closest friends, family and former wives, St. John manages to demythologize a man whose life often threatens to overshadow his music (unfortunately, however, she herself doesn't spend much time on Earle's actual recordings). She interprets Earle's death wish simply as an attempt to break away from his middle-class upbringing. Like his literary heroes Hemingway and Kerouac, he courts disaster to fuel his writing. As St. John writes, "It was no accident that his life was a series of belief-beggaring dramas; quite often he was the cause of them. Consciously or unconsciously, he cultivated his own legend." Springsteen may have been the "consummate chronicler of welfare-line blues," she writes, "but Steve had lived the life."

From Library Journal
Acclaimed singer/songwriter Earle granted St. John, a frequent contributor to the London Sunday Times, unrestricted access to write this unfliching portrait. Drawing on interviews with Earle as well as his friends and family (including six ex-wives), she traces the songwriter's life in gritty detail, from his childhood in rural Texas through his addictions, arrests, and breakups to his most recent triumphs. St. John also chronicles Earle's diverse musical influences, which range from Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark to Gram Parsons and Bruce Springsteen. When Earle's debut, Guitar Town, was released in 1986, he achieved success by reviving the pure sounds of legendary country musicians and combining it with the bluesy strains of rockabilly. Not long after the album's release, though, Earle began his slow descent into an inferno of drug abuse that nearly ended his life. After a four-year rut, Earle came roaring back to life with two flawless albums: El Corazon (1997) and Transcendental Blues (2000). On one hand, this first full-length portrait doesn't break any ground-the sordid aspects of Earle's life were already well documented. On the other, however, by using Earle's own words, St. John brings us closer to her subject's intimate relationship to music, which often gets overshadowed in the press. Ultimately, Earle emerges as a guy who wants to make damn good music. Recommended for all collections.

From Booklist
Okay, so the name-recognition factor for a Steve Earle bio may not be what it would for, say, a Nellie or Justin Timberlake tell-all. But those lightweights hold no candles to Earle when it comes to rootin', tootin', cursin', boozin', and drug huffin'. Although best-known as a songwriter and guitarist, Earle is an all-around accomplished folk-, country-, and "biker"-rocker and a liver of the blues--not to mention a mistreater of his liver--in the mode of Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, and Johnny Cash. He resembles Cash the most, in that he has lived the hellion life and hasn't killed himself. In fact, he may be walking down Recovery Road. Still, nothing is simple in Earle's life. Son Justin characterized a 12-step program his pop entered to fight his addictions as "only marginally less evil than the drugs," for the "compulsive necessity [and] life and death importance" of the program mirrored addiction. St. John tells Earle's story in grisly detail, thereby baring "the stuff legends are made of." Earle's a must-know pop musician, for sure. Mike Tribby

Amazing
By A Customer
He's had a hell of a life and he hasn't always been a hell of a guy...but he remains one of the most prolific, talented, and dogged songwriters around. I haven't stopped listening to Steve Earle since I've finished reading this book and his book of short stories.
He's worked hard to maintain his unique voice and his activism. This biography gets underneath all his songs - placing his music in the context of his life. I highly recommend this book, and his music.

Hardcore indeed
By James Nelson
By now, anyone with even a passing interest in "alternative country" has heard of Steve Earle and his womanizing, heroin shooting, crack smoking past. What people may not have heard about are the details. Lauren St. John lays them bare in this book, courtesy of the people who have befriended him, loved him, supported him and in most cases been thrown by the wayside by him. Earle recounts his past with the sheepish humor of a kid who's just been caught stealing the neighbor kid's bike. Personally, I'm a huge fan of his music and like many, think he is one of the most brilliant American songwriters ever. His knack for lyrical detail, gritty melodies and broad musical range are the stuff of legend. Having said that, he just doesn't sound like a real nice guy. But hey, how many of your heroes are? One could argue that nobody is a nice guy in the grip of crack and heroin addiction, and at times, Earle most certainly was not. The thing that disturbed me, however, was that even after recovery Earle still did not seem very remorseful about his treatment of former business associates, not to mention wives and family members. Again, one could argue that the past is the past, as Earle himself is inclined to do, but it seemed that some of the people who tried to help him even as he destroyed himself, such as John Dotson, were not given proper credit or respect. Earle's assertion that he "doesn't buy into" sister Stacey's version of events in the last days of his addiction just smacks of arrogance and unfairness. Besides, who are you going to believe, the crackhead or the sweet caretaking sister? Nonetheless, Hardcore Troubadour is a fascinating, well written biography . Despite all the misery, such as the gut-wrenching "Vacation in the Ghetto" sequence, many of Earle's antics are downright hysterical. One particular Christmas "homecoming" comes to mind. With or without drugs though, Earle obviously has a kind heart and is extremely generous to those he loves, especially in the area of finances. He is immensely talented, super intelligent and kind of bonkers in an endearing sort of way. Like myself, you may come away from this book all the more impressed that he is currently making the best music of his career, and not so impressed at how many people had to suffer for it.

A Survivor's Tale
By Mad Dog
I'm buying copies of this book for each of our kids - to show them one path through life they shouldn't even consider walking down. Steve Earle's life story isn't really all that new. Other artists, including numerous musicians have had difficulty with drug addiction following bouts with success in their craft. But Earle's story is nonetheless chilling and at times painful to absorb. The facts come crashing down like broken glass, leaving the reader to ponder just how Mr. Earle managed to survive THAT disaster.

I gave this book four stars and in terms of literary quality, that is a generous rating. I agree with reviewer Dale Miles's conclusion that a skilled editor could have helped significantly with the writing quality. To be more specific, I'd have enjoyed a more in-depth analysis of Earle's music and of the music that inspired him. I'd like to know more about his philosophical and political beliefs - simply put, I'm sure more flesh could have been put on the bones of this story.

Aside from those criticisms, I must admit that I'm hearing Steve Earle's music from a new perspective now. Back in real time, I'd heard of his addictions and of his battles with the music industry, but the numerous hard-luck stories revealed within Hardcore Troubador have a cumulative effect on the reader. Now, when I think about how I reacted to his weathered appearance at the Johnny Cash CMT tribute event, it all makes more sense. Earle's life episodes have certainly given him the blues and folk foundation from which he has drawn to create beautiful art, but I pity the man for what he's lived through in order to produce it.

More Than A Game: The Story of Cricket's Early Years, by John Major

The former Prime Minister examines the history of one of the great loves of his life.

Throughout John Major’s life, one of the constant factors has been his deep love of cricket. In this sumptuously illustrated book he delves deep into the game’s history, tracing its development from its rustic beginnings to the international sport we know today. Along the way he examines – and at times demolishes – many cherished myths. Among the subjects to which he pays particular attention are the changing social role of cricket, developments in the rules, the emergence of the professional player, the game’s spread throughout the British Empire and the part it has played in cementing international relations.

John Major’s history of cricket reflects not only his lifelong passion for the game, but the depth of his research among a wealth of hitherto neglected but fascinating sources. It is a significant addition to the already rich literature of the greatest game of all.

Review

'Expertly compiled and beautifully produced…it's a book full of insight, wisdom and dry humour and, most important of all, unquenchable enthusiasm which will be appreciated by everyone who shares it.’ Sunday Times

'Passion flows through every page…it's likely that as a work of reference "More Than a Game" will supplant its predecessors…long after all the self-serving political memoirs have been utterly forgotten, "More Than a Game" will still be settling arguments and giving pleasure across the civilised, cricket-loving world.' Sunday Telegraph

'I cannot imagine a better guide – authoritative, graceful and always with an eye to bringing out the quirky characters who have made cricket “more than a game”…(Major's) fascination with human behaviour makes lively reading…as a readable and likeable historian of what he loves, he takes some beating. He knows the beauty of the game and makes it live.' Daily Mail

'A thoroughly accessible history of cricket…the author's passion for a sport has resulted in a volume that could become the definitive account of cricket's early years.' Waterstones Books Quarterly

'Major's richly detailed history of the game interleaves anecdotes of test match results being passed round cabinet meetings with stories of the game's early patrons.' Observer

'It's a spectacular achievement. I can't think of anyone else who could have given such an authoritative inner and overview of the game and have the ability and knowledge to put it in the context of cultural, commercial, historical and social happenings at the same time. But more than that, it is a personal book and, even with the extraordinary amount of information, thoroughly readable…a startlingly good book. John has done a marvellous job, and I think, for the first time ever, we have both the reasonably well-known and the unknown facts about cricket put in a social and historical context and in a readable and concise fashion.' David Rayvern Allen

More than a chronology
By Vincent Poirier
For More Than A Game, John Major uses the same formula he used for his autobiography: he starts with a chronological account then switches to topical subjects.

In the first half he presents a chronology of cricket from the very early days when records reveal something called cricket was played but that was probably nothing more than hitting a ball with a stick, if even that. Major continues with successive chapters describing successive periods until he reaches the late 18th century by which time cricket had become something fans would recognize today.

Major then switches to topical chapters which are still in a loose chronological order but with considerable overlap. He has a chapter on the evolution of bowling from under hand to round arm to over hand. One chapter describes how troups of players began being paid to tour the country while another describes the slow controversial ascendancy of these professionals. Major even devotes one whole chapter to the people who keep game records, and manages to keep it interesting! The last chapter ends with how the Great War killed many promising young cricketers.

The book is wonderfully well written. Major's prose is clear direct and forceful; it's not perfect and he waxes a little too lyrical on occasion and quotes poetry that only a cricket lover could forgive. And the editor should really have insisted on a better title.

Again, John Major shows himself to be a pragmatic conservative. As he valued the Tory party above the issues that tore it apart (e.g. Europe) Major values the institution of cricket above any single characteristic. He sees the game isn't now what it was at the beginning of the 20th century, but he recognizes that the game needs changes like one-day cricket if it is to maintain its place among other sports. While his book is about cricket's past, readers may feel cricket has a great future lying ahead.

Well Worth Reading
By John Britt
I had seen a review of this book in the Economist a few years back, and had put it on my "to read" list. Finally got around to downloading it while on holiday in Hawaii. I've only started reading it, but I can tell you that it is very good. I know nothing whatsoever about cricket, and I wanted to learn. Mr. Major is an excellent writer and he brings the sport to life. If, like me, you know nothing about cricket and want to have a comfortable and enjoyable read, I recommend this book. Also, because Mr. Major followed Mrs. Thatcher as PM, I always had a view of him (as did, no doubt, others in the US) as somewhat bland; he is not. The book gives you an insight into Mr. Major's personality that makes for fascinating reading.

Quite brilliant!!! A VERY British - and pleasant - reading experience.
By Wounded Combat Veteran
This is fabulous! This is a VERY pleasant reading experience. This author was wasted as a Prime Minister: he is a brilliant, enthusiastic, and precise writer. This is a pre-WW I history of cricket, and is unexpectedly detailed and brilliantly witty! My only complaint is that it stops at WW I. I'd like to have read about the aftermath of WW I on the game, and of the Interwar Years. Did the breakdown in the class system damage cricket, or alter its character?

A must for herbalists
By Basbenee
I bought an earlier version of this book probably 10 years ago and have found it to be indispensible. I, however, did want a better updated version (newer herbs gleaned from research, etc) so I bought this latest edition. I am very pleased with the book, as it offers advice on preparation, harvesting, keeping all systems of the body healthy, just like the old book. It does have some improvements, though, too. This book is in color throughout, and beautifully laid out. Each herbal entry has a photo either of the plant itself or of the root. The information is very well laid out for each entry, noting each herb's properties, uses, harvesting tips, and so on. The only real quirk that bothered me at first, was that the herbs were not listed by common name, but rather by botanical name. But in the long run I'm growing to like this, as it's forcing me to better learn the Latin names, and I think it's a good safety feature, too, since the Latin name is really the only accurate one, with all the varied names gleaned from folklore, etc. Ultimately it makes finding the right plant easier and makes it safer since you're less likely to make an error in finding the right herb for a particular ailment or condition.
