especially someone like Eliot.

I got this becuase my cassette player finally broke and I have to have a copy of Eliot reading his Quartets at hand at all times. His dispassionate reading, where the only language itself rules, is such a pleasure. Sonically, it is very soothing too. Nothing can compare to the author reading his own work, especially someone like Eliot.

Great use of the English language.

For understanding who, where we are, how it is, Eliot's "The Wasteland" is as indispensable as Nietzsche's "Twilight of the Idols", Freud's "Civilization and Its Discontents", Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" . . . while "Four Quartets" is a voyage, or series of them, searching for ways out of the morass, among the best, most daring poetic explorations of our age . . .

To hear the author read his own is a delight and more, far more appropriate and thrilling than hearing any other voice. As far as I know no other CD contains all of "Four Quartets" read by T.S. himself. If only this item were again available here, especially as an MP3 download. Kindly e-mail Amazon to suggest this.

To call, as above, "Four Quartets" Eliot's "whole-hearted acceptance of the Christian faith" is myopic and obstructive, a blurred view through a smudged windshield. Some excerpts from 4Q should give some idea of the expansiveness, the breaking away and opening up qualities, of these poems: "World not world, but that which is not world, Internal darkness, deprivation And destitution of all property, Desiccation of the world of sense" . . . "Whisper of running streams, and winter lightning. The wild thyme unseen and the wild strawberry, The laughter in the garden, echoed ecstasy" . . . "The sea has many voices, Many gods and many voices" . . . "I think that the river Is a strong brown god" . . . "So Krishna, as when he admonished Arjuna" . . .

This is not a dogmatic or reactionary or fundamentalist faith, not the popular consumer, hedonist faith of our time, not one tied tight to our rationalist faith. But one heard from and about rarely these days, having much in common with the Neo-Platonism of earlier times, expressed in these familiar lines from "The Tempest": "We are such stuff  As dreams are made on; and our little life  Is rounded with a sleep", and in this from John Donne: "If I an ordinary nothing were, As shadow, a light, and body must be here . . ."

Consider these lines from 4Q:

. . . be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love,
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought:
So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.

Thought which holds opposites, negations in a fine balance, confounds conventional narrative and logic. Modern meets ancient. Perhaps no other poetry in English matches this assimilation of what M. Arnold called "the best that has been thought and said".

In her "Life of the Mind" Hannah Arendt defines thought as conversations in the head aided by imagination or images present in the mind but not to the senses. Participating in Eliot's language and imagination (which often involves abstract or imageless images or images which stretch the boundaries of what can be imagined) can be a wonderful workout to mind.

Starkey looks at Henry VIII's early reign

This June 2009 marks one of those dates in history that tend to make historians take notice -- on Midsummer Day, 1509, a young man who was barely eighteen and freshly married, attended his coronation as Henry VIII, King of England. And now to mark the 500th anniversary of that occasion, there has been a wealth of new books, both fiction and nonfiction, exhibitions, and quite a bit television to boot. It seems that the public is still interested in this king of legend, he of the many wives and a rather bloodthirsty record.

Longtime popular historian David Starkey now focuses his attention on King Henry himself after writing about Henry's wives and Henry's children. In the first volume of a proposed series, Starkey looks at a portion of Henry's life that most writers either skip or ignore, preferring to rush ahead to the more titillating aspects of the king's life, namely his divorce from Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn. But in Virtuous Prince, Starkey works a bit farther back, looking closely at the history of England around the time of Henry's birth, and the remarkable events that surrounded how the Tudors came to the throne.

The story begins with the Wars of the Roses, the conflict that arose from having a weak king, Henry VI, and two rival families that were seeking to take the throne for themselves. The winners eventually turned out to be the Yorkists, who were led by Edward IV, a charismatic man who had the misfortune to marry a woman who had many relations to take care of and a disposition that wasn't likely to win her many allies. When Edward died, he was supposed to be followed by his son, another Edward, and there was a younger brother, Richard, Duke of York, in case anything happened. But it turned out that it was Edward IV's brother, Richard III who became king. Now a new rival arose in Henry Tudor, a remote descendant of Edward III and Henry IV who decided that the crown of England was worth gambling for. And in 1485, Henry invaded, fought Richard III at Bosworth, and won.

England for a time, was stable. Henry VII, as he was known, married Elizabeth of York, Edward IV's eldest daughter, and set to work unifying a fractured kingdom and begetting heirs. His first son, Arthur, was his parents? pride, and carefully educated and groomed to become the next king. And when a second son, Henry, was born in 1491, and christened with great ceremony, the succession was assured with an heir and a spare.

Gradually, we get to learn about the lifestyle of a young prince, and the people and influences around him. One aspect of David Starkey's writing that I've enjoyed is that he is able to take complex ideas and circumstances and make them understandable to readers who are not university-trained scholars. What makes this so interesting to read is that I discovered that the future Henry VIII was a lively, intelligent boy, delighting when he was the center of attention, a student that was skilled in languages and scholarship, but also devoted to horsemanship, hunting, and especially jousting. When his elder brother married the Spanish princess, Catherine of Aragon, in 1501, Henry was an old hand at charming the crowds despite being only ten years old, and he relished the attention. But within six months, Catherine of Aragon was a widow, and Henry was his father's heir. Even more devastating was that his mother, Elizabeth of York, was dead within a year after that, trying to bear another child. In the following years, Henry watched his elder sister Margaret be married off to the Scots king, and poor Catherine of Aragon be variously betrothed, married and repudiated by himself by orders of his father. In the meantime, Henry VII never got over the loss of his wife and eldest son, became more miserly, and gradually saw his health decline, finally passing away in early 1509.

Starkey covers the early few years of Henry's reign, when he could indulge in patronage, his love of sportsmanship, and his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. The story, so far, ends abruptly with the death of Henry's first son, a little prince that only survived for less than two months.

What I took away from this one was the image of Henry as a Renaissance prince, brilliant and shining, looking at the future with the promise of every desire being fulfilled. And given the world that he grew up in, there is nothing to show that events would ever turn against him.

While Starkey's style of writing does get annoying at times -- he delights in the occasional snarky saying or joke, and other times he gets very pompous and pedantic in his writing -- this is still an excellent book. So many authors give the barest outlines of Henry VIII's early years, if they mention it at all, and it was very eye-opening to see how much of the younger man survived as Henry aged and went through the turmoil of trying to leave a legitimate, living son behind him to be king.

Along with the narrative, there are three inserts of colour reproductions of paintings, engravings and objects associated with his reign. There is a genealogical chart showing the lineage of the Tudor, Yorkist and Lancastrian dynasties, as well as an extensive bibliography, notes and index to help those who are interested in further research. Finally, there is an interview with David Starkey by director David Sington to coincide with the television programme Henry VIII: The Mind of a Tyrant -- this interview is unique with this particular edition of the book.

For those who have not yet explored the glittering world of England's Tudor kings, this would make an interesting start, but I recommend that they start with Starkey's biography about Henry's queens, titled Six Wives, which gives a slightly better overview or one of Alison Weir's many biographies about the Tudors.

Overall, this gets a hefty four and half stars, rounded up to five. It's a readable, workable biography, and helped me to fill in a lot of gaps that I did not know about the youth of Henry VIII. And, happily, there is a forthcoming volume -- Henry: Model of a Tyrant -- that will continue on Starkey's story about one of England's most recognizable kings.

Excellent view of Henry pre-bloat.

I know Dr. Starkey is controversial among Tudorphiles - a love him or hate him sort of thing. I personally love him. As with all his previous Tudor period histories, this appears very well-researched and his conclusions feasible, even probable. Dr. Starkey gives extensive background for his assessment of the Tudor king's character and actions and does not seem to jump to unfathomable conclusions like some other authors (DO sit down, Ms.Weir!) The young Henry seems in such stark contrast to the older Henry, they seem almost to be two people. Dr Starkey does much in this book to reconcile the two and provide interesting theories for the chasm. As always, his writing is very clear and interesting, not your usual dry professorial read at all.( I do think he has a slight crush on Anne Boleyn. I swear reading his descriptions of her, you can almost hear Barry White singing in the background.) Oddly enough, I came away from this book feeling that although Dr. Starkey feels he has made an accurate assessment of the great - and I mean that - Tudor king, he did not really understand him. That Henry's contradictory personality is deliberate on the part of the king and purposely designed so that no man might know his true mind - even 500 years later.

Starkey - starry-eyed!

Despite having taken a republican line some years ago in a TV studio debate on British royalty, Starkey seems magnetized by monarchy. He has developed a stellar career writing on the subject, generating several books and television series. He handles source material with relish and in DVDs judiciously uses prestige heritage locations.

This is a very good and readable account of the great monster's life, marking 500 years since his accession in 1509. Starkey is particularly strong on the early years. He has recently criticised the focus on Henry VIII's wives, notwithstanding his own Six Wives: The Queens of Henry VIII, and this book aims to right the balance.

Starkey has also written another study of Henry, The Reign of Henry VIII: Personalities and Politics - and has recently said that despite his fascination for Henry, he feels he will never exhaust him.

Whether Starkey finds royalty reprehensible or magnetizing, this is a great read. (It's already out in DVD in the UK under the title Henry: Mind of a Tyrant ... )

Born in Montana, USA, Torey Hayden has spent most of her adult life working with children in distress. Now living in Great Britain, she divides her time between writing and volunteer work with several British charities. Raising the Bar

This is truly one of the most inspiring books I have ever read. Torey Hayden has truly raised the bar in working with children and has, in pioneer fashion, blazed new trails and set new standards.

Sheila, a 6-year-old girl living in grinding poverty and raised by her single father faced some daunting odds when she entered Torey Hayden's special needs class. Abandoned by her mother, beaten by her father and facing a court ordered sentence to a hospital after a particularly violent episode, Sheila was extremely aggressive and wary. Since she had no bathing facilities in the home she shared with her father, Sheila was often dirty and underfed. It is a true testament to her courage and Torey Hayden's belief and persistence that Sheila began confiding in her within 3 days of her classroom placement. I like the way Torey Hayden started a grooming routine for Sheila, which positively impacted her behavior and interactions with others.

Sheila entered that classroom under very inauspicious conditions. The court ordered that she at least be educated until the state hospital opening was available. In that class, Sheila flourished and even made overtures to her classmates, some of whom functioned well below age level.

Luckily for all, Torey Hayden was able to to have the court recind the commitment order. Sheila stayed in that class for the remainder of the year and made quantum leaps and bounds. During an early testing session it was determined that Sheila had an IQ of 182. This highly gifted little girl was able to express herself eloquently. Quick to assess people and situations, Sheila had developed a survival mode early. In that class she used her natural endowments to her advantage.

The gifts this child had to offer and the gifts she received in that class are a song to the soul. There is a poignancy about her courage. She is, to a large extent, accepting of her life conditions and makes the best with available resources.

This is a book that will evoke just about every possible emotion, from sadness to anger to cheering gladly. The close of the term is indeed bittersweet; the parting of teacher and pupil is very moving indeed. One sees the progress Sheila has made and marvels at what this child unknowingly had to give.

There should be more Torey Haydens' in the world

It has been quite some time since I read One Child , yet I can say that among the hundreds of books I have read, that was the most striking among all. Its the type of book that makes you want to become a better person and try in your own way to make a difference in the world, just as Torey did to those children. I know I did! I tip my hat to her, and I am very grateful that there are still people like her here in the world who REALLY love, especially the most unlovable. I have an autistic cousin too that's why I was really able to relate to the story. Now I know why they are called special children, it's not a euphemism people use for abnormal or dumb, they really are SPECIAL in every meaning of the word. I believe everyone should read it, especially on days when they are down, because although this book is a real tear-jerker, it has a lot of fun moments too. Most of all it makes us realize how lucky we are for not having to go through all the hardships these kids went through. In the end, we feel uplifted and very touched, that we forget about griping and self-pitying.

For the Love of a Child

Torey Hayden's book was extremely well written and very emtionial. Torey is an exceptional teacher, as well as a compassionate and patient person. She feels for these children and is willing to stick her own neck out to save them. Her strong desire to help these children, especially Sheila is indeed the making of a true teacher. To see Sheila's behavior change was truly remarkable. How Torey got Sheila to respond to schoolwork and other children was amazing. I enjoyed every moment of this book. It made me cry at times to read how Sheila was treated and it also made me mad for the way she was neglected, abused and rejected. I was so happy when she finally accepted the fact that she would have to move on in life, but still could hold on to the memories that she would always have from Torey's Special Class. This book has made me want to read the sequel, as well as other Torey Hayden books. I would recommend this book to anyone, who has any dealing with children.

About the Author
Alan Lee was born in Middlesex in 1947. His illustrated books include Faeries (with Brian Froud), Castles and Merlin Dreams, and has worked on such prestigious films as Erik the Viking (Terry Gilliam), Legend (Ridley Scott), and the acclaimed NBC miniseries Merlin. He is best known however for his work on the book and film versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

This collection features six works of Alan Lee who, along with John Howe, was one of the principle conceptual artists for Peter Jackson's films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings".

The six works featured in this collection are:

1. The Mines of Moria

2. Tol Brandir

3. The Golden Hall

4. Orthanc

5. The Siege of Gondor

6. Two Orcs in the Land of Shadow

The six works are large, stand alone posters on heavy stock contained within an attractive folder featuring "Orthanc" on the front cover. The prints--the originals were done in watercolor--have a black border with the name of the work and the artist at the bottom in small print.

These prints are an excellent addition to any Tolkien fan's collection.

Tolkien's art

In the world of Tolkien artwork, two artists sit at the top of the heap: Alan Lee and John Howe. These two artists have devoted a lot of ink to sketching scenes from J.R.R. Tolkien's masterworks, and in the "Lord of the Rings Poster Collection 2," we get to see some of Lee's best work.

"The Halls of Moria" is one of the most stirring pieces of artwork -- an enormous dark hall full of pillars and vaulted ceilings, with a beam of light shining over the Fellowship. "Tol Brandir" shows a tangle of leafless branches, mossy rocks and stone steps. And then there's the "Golden Hall," a beautiful landscape crowned by a hill, on top of which is Theoden's home. Lee's painted clouds look as if they are glowing.

"Orthanc" shifts the focus to grimmer subjects -- Saruman's stronghold is immense, menacing, vaguely insectile with its black shiny look. And, of course, it's surrounded by floodwater. "The Siege of Gondor" is tightly packed with grinning, creepy orcs with spears, and a few human warriors, one of whom is dead. And "Two Orcs" has a pair of suitably creepy-looking orcs, not doing much.

Of the two poster collections of Lee's work, the second is obviously superior. We get a range of subjects, from all three books, and it shows the different kinds of artwork that Lee can do. The posters themselves are lovely -- high quality paper, clear reproduction. As for the pictures themselves....

Alan Lee does "still work" the best -- even when his subjects are in motion, they look very quiet and almost dreamlike. There's a lot of detail poured into these, since even small twigs, cracks and stains make their way into his artwork. They also tend to have muted, faded colours, lots of soft greys, browns and greens. Some of them look like sepia photographs.

Looking at these beautiful posters, it's easy to see why Lee was one of the designers for the "Lord of the Rings" movies' exquisite sets. A wonderful collection of fantasy artwork.

Wonderful Collection of Alan Lee Art

Not much I can add besides what was already said about this fine collection of art posters. Although all six posters are superb, I purchased this set mainly for the print of Orthanc, Moria and the Golden Hall to have framed and displayed with some of my Weta Lord of the Rings environment collectibles. This set really highlights why Alan Lee is one of the premier artist for Tolkien inspired work and it's well worth the price. If you're a fan of Alan Lee's work I also recommend you check out his book The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook.

About the Author
Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English literature at Oxford University until 1954 when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. His major contributions in literary criticism, children's literature, fantasy literature and popular theology brought him international renown and acclaim. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year.

This is an absolutely extraordinary collection. While it does not contain all the works that "C.S. Lewis: Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces" does, it contains a great number of his bests for around $15 as compared to $150 for the latter work (including: God in the Dock, The World's Last Night, and The Weight of Glory). I had an incredibly hard time finding the complete list of essays included (I ended up having to look at the Canadian HarperCollins Website), so I'll post the complete list here:

Jean Ure was born in Surrey and, when growing up, knew that she was going to be a writer or a ballet dancer.
