David Beckham: My Side, by TOM WATT

David Beckham is one of the world's foremost media icons, his popularity transcending sport and cultural divides. This is his own in-depth account of his career to date, for Manchester United and England, and of his childhood, family and personal life. With endless newspaper column inches devoted to one of the most talked about men in the world, it seems that we know everything there is to know about David Beckham. Or do we? This is Beckham's fascinating life story in his own words. His complex relationship with United boss Alex Ferguson and how he handles the pressure of playing alongside some of the most volatile footballers of his generation. The England story, from being vilified by the nation before returning as the prodigal son and almost single-handedly guiding his country as captain to the 2002 World Cup Finals. One minute we are singing his praises; the next we are castigating him for losing control of his temper and being a poor role model. Where does the truth lie? Now from Beckham himself, we gain a vivid and at times searingly honest insight into the family man behind the famous footballer, the international model and fashion leader. He describes how he first met and then married ex-Spice girl Victoria Adams, and the upbringing of their two children Brooklyn and Romeo. How his family's every step is monitored by a possee of newshounds and paparazzi. Also, the influence of his parents, growing up as a shy youngster in the family home, and how their subsequent split affected him. This book is an intimate and soul-searching portrayal of a massive celebrity, a family man, and an awe-inspiring footballer -- the likes of which we are unlikely to see again.

Everything you'd expect from a good football autobiography, and more
By T. P. Ang
I seldom read sports biographies, but nonetheless found this book hard to put down once I started on it. Beckam provides a refreshingly honest and eye-opening account of life in the dressing room and beyond. The book takes the reader on a comprehensive narrative from his childhood years to his rise to international stardom that has few dull moments. Particularly commendable, in my opinion, is the book's effort to provide a fair assessment of all the major characters in Beckham's life, especially his manager and mentor for many years, Sir Alex Ferguson.

Beckam's life beyond the football pitch also lends an extra dimension to his account that is usually absent in the traditional footballer's autobiography. His sometimes tragic, sometimes uplifting accounts of his convoluted relationship with the media, the wider British public and of course, his well-publicised courtship with Victoria are tremendously absorbing. In this sense, the book offers the reader much more than just a catalogue of golden goals and match performances.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I believe it will captivate football fans and non-football fans alike. Highly recommended!

A big fan of Manchester United
By Marita A. Hansen
Yeah, I might be a bit biased here. I'm a fan of Manchester United and like the way David Beckham plays "the beautiful game." Although I read this a while back I do remember devouring the pages with great interest, not finding a dull moment in it. From his 1998 World Cup disgrace to the fighting with Fergie this was a very interesting read, and to hear it from David Beckham's point of view even more so. I must admit I was annoyed with Fergie quite a bit, the nerve of him telling Becks to put soccer before his family as well as basically causing Becks to leave the team. Also, I felt sorry for Beckham in regards to what happened in 1998 when he got sent off from the World Cup after he reacted to what that Argentinian player did. I suppose others may still blame him, and that I may be more forgiving as I'm not English, but I understood why he reacted and the only annoyance I felt was to the Argentinian soccer player's unsportsmanship. It just shows how dirty the game can get, which also reminded me of the incident between Zinedine Zidane and the Italian player years later.

Anyway, if you're a fan of David Beckham or Manchester United read this, you should like it.

I must admit i was really excited to read this book, but it didn't live up to the hype. I thought it would of detailed a lot more of his training regime and the dedication it took to get where he is. But most of the book was spent talking about the other side of his life away from football and his unconditional love for his wife which is the underlying theme of the book. If you wanna book that purely deals with that then this is the book for you, but if your a sports lovers i wouldn't recommend it.
